Prithostu napta prithudharmakarmathah prachinabarhiryuvatau shatadrutau, prachetaso nama suchetasah sutanajijanattvatkarunankuraniva.

Prachinabarhi, a descendant of Prithu devoted to great works of dharma, had sons by the young Shatadruti: the wise Prachetas, who were like sprouts of your compassion.

Pituh sisrikshaniratasya shasanadbhavattapasyabhirata dashapi te, payonidhim pashchimametya tattate sarovaram sandadrishurmanoharam.

At the command of their father, who was intent on creation, all ten took up austerities devoted to you. Reaching the western ocean, they found a lovely lake on its shore.

Tada bhavattirthamidam samagato bhavo bhavatsevakadarshanadritah, prakashamasadya purah prachetasamupadishadbhaktatamastava stavam.

Then Shiva, who had come to this holy lake of yours, eager to see your servants, appeared before the Prachetas and, as your greatest devotee, taught them a hymn in your praise.

Stavam japantastamami jalantare bhavantamasevishatayutam samah, bhavatsukhasvadarasadamishviyanbabhuva kalo dhruvavanna shighrata.

Chanting that hymn, they worshipped you in the water for ten thousand years. Lost in the joy of tasting you, they let so much time pass; unlike Dhruva, they were in no hurry.

Tapobhireshamatimatravardhibhih sa yajnahimsaniratopi pavitah, pitapi tesham grihayatanaradapradarshitatma bhavadatmatam yayau.

Their ever-growing austerities purified even their father, who had been given to sacrifices that harmed animals. Shown his true self by Narada, who came to his house, he attained oneness with you.

Kripabalenaiva purah prachetasam prakashamagah patagendravahanah, viraji chakradivarayudhamshubhirbhujabhirashtabhirudanchitadyutih.

By the power of your compassion alone, you appeared before the Prachetas riding Garuda, king of birds, your eight arms gleaming with the light of your discus and other great weapons.

Prachetasam tavadayachatamapi tvameva karunyabharadvaranadah, bhavadvichintapi shivaya dehinam bhavatvasau rudranutishcha kamada.

Though the Prachetas asked for nothing, out of great compassion you gave them boons: “May even thinking of you bring good to all embodied beings, and may this hymn of Rudra grant wishes.”

Avapya kantam tanayam mahiruham taya ramadhvam dashalakshavatsarim, sutostu daksho nanu tatkshanachcha mam prayasyatheti nyagado mudaiva tan.

“Take as your wife the lovely daughter of the trees and live happily with her for a million years. Let Daksha be your son, and after that you will come to me,” you told them gladly.

Tatashcha te bhutalarodhinastarunkrudha dahanto druhinena varitah, drumaishcha dattam tanayamavapya tam tvaduktakalam sukhinobhiremire.

Then, as they angrily burned the trees that covered the earth, Brahma stopped them. Receiving the daughter the trees offered, they lived happily for the time you had set.

Avapya daksham cha sutam kritadhvarah prachetaso naradalabdhaya dhiya, avapuranandapadam tathavidhastvamisha vatalayanatha pahimam.

Having Daksha as their son and completing their sacrifices, the Prachetas, with the wisdom Narada gave them, reached the state of bliss. Lord of Guruvayur, so gracious, protect me.
