I worship your form: a crown that rivals the sun, a forehead bright with an upright tilak, eyes full of compassion, a soft and tender smile, a fine nose, makara-shaped earrings glowing on your cheeks, the Kaustubha gem shining at your throat, radiant with forest garlands, necklaces and the Shrivatsa mark.

I cling to your form that cuts away all suffering: four splendid arms adorned with armlets, bracelets and jewelled rings, holding the mace, conch, discus and lotus; a gleaming yellow silk robe bound with a golden girdle; and feet glowing like a spotless lotus.

Your form is more glorious than the greatest in the three worlds, more enchanting than enchantment, lovelier than the treasury of loveliness, sweeter than sweetness itself, more beautiful than the most beautiful and more wondrous than wonder. Vishnu, all-pervading Lord, whose longing does it not stir?

Having won your so sweet form, Lakshmi, goddess of fortune, longs for you so intensely that she never stays long even with her own devotees. And so, alas, Achyuta, her steady love for your charming form earned her the name of being fickle.

That Lakshmi is unsteady with others only because your beauty has stolen her heart, let me prove another way, Lord of Lakshmi: with devotees who delight in meditating on you and singing your virtues, she stays put, honouring them because they speak of her beloved.

Your form, pouring out ever-fresh nectar of charm, the elixir of supreme consciousness, steals the heart. For those who merely hear of it, it at once stirs the mind, intoxicates it, makes the body thrill, and bathes it in cool tears born of a swoon of bliss.

That is why the masters of yoga declare the yoga of devotion far higher than the two paths of action and knowledge. Devotion, which is the height of love for you, who are beauty itself, can be reached by everyone without strain, beloved of Lakshmi.

The yoga of action, doing one’s own duty without desire, bears fruit only far off; and the knowledge taught by the Upanishads is very hard for the mind to grasp, since its truth is unseen. So, Lord, devotion that is love for you is always sweeter and better.

After performing heaps of exhausting rituals, people are cleansed and become fit for knowledge or devotion, but what of it? Others toil on the path of reasoning to contemplate your supreme form called Brahman, and without a melted heart they succeed only after many births.

But devotion to you perfects itself by bathing in streams of nectar from your stories, effortlessly opens the way to pure knowledge, and brings fulfilment at once. Victory to it, Lord! Lord of Guruvayur, may that very devotion, the melting rapture of mature love for your feet, come to me quickly.
