Indradyumnah pandyakhandadhirajastvadbhaktatma chandanadrau kadachit, tvatsevayam magnadhiraluloke naivagastyam praptamatithyakamam.
Indradyumna, king of the Pandya land and your devotee, was once on the sandalwood mountain so absorbed in your worship that he did not notice the sage Agastya, who had come seeking hospitality.
Kumbhodbhutissambhritakrodhabharah stabdhatma tvam hastibhuyam bhajeti, shaptvathainam pratyagatsopi lebhe hastindratvam tvatsmritivyaktidhanyam.
Agastya, born from a pot, filled with anger, cursed him: ‘Dull one, become an elephant,’ and left. The king became the lord of elephants, a birth blessed by his remembrance of you.
Dugdhambhodhermadhyabhaji trikute kridanchhaile yuthapoyam vashabhih, sarvan jantunatyavartishta shaktya tvadbhaktanam kutra notkarshalabhah.
On Mount Trikuta in the midst of the Milk Ocean, this herd leader played with his she-elephants and surpassed all creatures in strength. Where do your devotees not rise to greatness?
Svena sthemna divyadeshatvashaktya soyam khedanaprajanan kadachit, shailaprante gharmatantah sarasyam yuthaih sardham tvatpranunnobhireme.
Through his own strength and the power of that divine land he knew no hardship. Once, worn out by heat on the mountainside and prompted by you, he played in a lake with his herd.
Huhustavaddevalasyapi shapadgrahibhutastajjale vartamanah, jagrahainam hastinam padadeshe shantyartham hi shrantidosi svakanam.
Huhu, a gandharva turned into a crocodile by the sage Devala’s curse and living in that lake, seized the elephant by the foot. For you bring trouble to your own so as to bring them peace.
Tvatsevaya vaibhavaddurnirodham yudhyantam tam vatsaranam sahasram, prapte kale tvatpadaikagryasiddhyai nakrakrantam hastivaryam vyadhastvam.
Made unyielding by the power of his devotion to you, he fought for a thousand years. When the time came, you let the great elephant be overpowered by the crocodile, so that his mind would rest on your feet alone.
Artivyaktapraktanajnanabhaktih shundotkshiptaih pundarikaissamarchan, purvabhyastam nirvisheshatmanishtham stotrashreshtham sonvagadit paratman.
In his anguish, the knowledge and devotion of his past life awoke; offering lotuses raised in his trunk, he recited the finest hymn, learned long before, fixed on the formless Self, O Supreme.
Shrutva stotram nirgunastham samastam brahmeshadyairnahamityaprayate, sarvatma tvam bhurikarunyavegat tarkshyarudhah prekshitobhuh purastat.
Hearing that hymn to the formless, Brahma, Shiva and the others did not come, thinking ‘It is not me he calls.’ You, the Self of all, in a great rush of compassion, appeared before him riding Garuda.
Hastindram tam hastapadmena dhritva chakrena tvam nakravaryam vyadarih, gandharvesminmuktashape sa hasti tvatsarupyam prapya dedipyate sma.
Holding the elephant king with your lotus hand, you tore the crocodile apart with your discus. The gandharva was freed from his curse, and the elephant, taking a form like yours, shone brightly.
Etadvrittam tvam cha mam cha prage yo gayetsoyam bhuyase shreyase syat, ityuktvainam tena sardham gatastvam dhishnyam vishno pahi vatalayesha.
‘Whoever sings at dawn of this story, of you and of me, will gain the highest good.’ Saying this, you went with him to your abode. O Vishnu, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
