At the gods’ plea to end ten-headed Ravana, in Kosala, the sage Rishyashringa performed the rite for a son and gave King Dasharatha the finest payasam. His three queens ate it and conceived together, and you were born as Rama, along with Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna.

Bow in hand, followed by Lakshmana, you went at your father’s word to guard Vishvamitra’s great sacrifice, the weariness of the road eased by the sage’s teaching. To protect people, at the sage’s urging you struck down Tataka with arrows, received a host of divine weapons from him, and came to his forest hermitage called Siddhashrama.

Driving off Maricha and killing the other demons with arrows at the sacrifice, freeing Ahalya with the dust of your feet on the way, you reached Janaka’s palace, broke Shiva’s bow and won Sita, daughter of the earth, Lakshmi herself; then you set out for your kingdom with your three heroic brothers and their wives.

When Parashurama, jewel of the Bhrigu line, blind with rage, blocked your path, you drew his power into yourself and he left. Then you lived happily in Ayodhya with your beloved, O lovely one. Once, when Bharata had gone with Shatrughna to his uncle’s home, the coronation your father had begun was thwarted by Kaikeyi, daughter of the Kekaya king.

At your father’s word you set out for the forest with your brother and wife, bow in hand; you turned back the citizens on the way, reached Guha’s home, and put on matted hair and bark clothes. Crossing the Ganga by boat, you bowed to Bharadvaja nearby, and at his word lived very happily on the great Chitrakuta mountain.

Hearing from Bharata that your father, grieving for his son, had gone to heaven, you offered him water in sorrow and entrusted your sandals and the kingdom to Bharata. Then, bowing to Atri, you went into the vast Dandaka forest, killed the huge demon Viradha, and gave the sage Sharabhanga a blessed end.

Bowing to Agastya, you promised the hermits, whom you wished well, that you would rid every quarter of demons; the sage then gave you Vishnu’s divine bow and the Brahma weapon. On the way you met Jatayu, your father’s friend, and joyfully lived with your young wife at Panchavati on the bank of the Godavari.

When Shurpanakha came, unsteady with desire, you could not bear her pleading and sent her to Lakshmana, who in fury cut off her nose. Seeing her, the enraged Khara, Dushana and Trishiras attacked, and in a moment, untouched, you slew them along with more than ten thousand demons.

Ravana, swayed by his sister’s tale, sent Maricha disguised as a magic deer. Lotus-eyed Sita longed for it, and you followed and killed it with an arrow. When its magical cry drew Lakshmana away, Ravana carried Sita off. Though grieved, you felt a secret joy within, for now you had a reason to destroy him.

Searching for your slender wife, you met Jatayu, who said, “Ravana has taken your wife and struck me down,” and went to heaven; you performed your friend’s last rites. You killed Kabandha who seized you, met Shabari, and on the bank of the Pampa found Hanuman, son of the wind, your heart overjoyed. Protect me, Lord of Guruvayur.
