Brought by Hanuman into friendship with Sugriva, you flicked the huge body of Dundubhi far away with your toe and pierced seven sal trees at once with a single arrow. Having slain by a stratagem the mighty Vali, who sought to kill Sugriva, you spent the rainy season near Matanga’s hermitage, restless with longing for Sita.

When Sugriva, warned by Lakshmana, came in fear and you saw the army of bears and monkeys he had assembled bow low, ready to search every direction for your beloved, you joyfully gave your message and ring into Hanuman’s hand. Then the monkeys searched for your beloved, path after path, with great effort.

On the word of Sampati, whose great wings grew back on hearing your news, Hanuman leapt across the ocean, found Sita in the city and gave her your ring. He ravaged the garden, killed Aksha in battle, let himself be bound, saw Ravana, burned Lanka and quickly brought you Sita’s crest-jewel.

With the mighty monkey army of Sugriva, Angada and others covering the land, you marched to the ocean shore and gave refuge to Vibhishana, the demon king’s brother. Hearing in private his news of the enemy, you grew angry when your request to the ocean went unanswered; terrified by your fire weapon, the ocean spoke and you won a path through its middle.

Having the monkeys build a bridge from mountains brought from every direction, you crossed and crushed the demons with your army, who fought with teeth, nails, peaks, rocks and trees. As you showed great valour in battle with your brother, you were bound by the serpent weapon of Indrajit, conqueror of Indra, and freed by the wind of Garuda’s wings.

Lakshmana, his life ebbing from the blow of a spear, revived by smelling the herbs on the mountain Hanuman brought, and killed Meghanada, who prided himself on trickery. When illusions caused panic, Vibhishana’s words cleared your confusion, and you destroyed Kumbhakarna, who came shaking the earth and devouring the whole army.

Taking the chariot and armour sent by Indra, you fought Ravana and cut off his heads with the Brahma weapon. You accepted Sita, proven pure by fire, and, O Lord, with the bears and monkeys restored to life unhurt by the gods’ boon, and with Vibhishana, now king of Lanka, you returned with your beloved to your city in the Pushpaka chariot.

Delighted by your divine coronation, you lived happily with Sita for more than ten thousand years; then, alas, because of sinful gossip, you abandoned her while she was with child. Through Shatrughna you had the demon Lavana slain, and you struck down Shambuka. Meanwhile Sita, living in Valmiki’s hermitage, bore you two sons.

At the sacrifice, your sons sang Valmiki’s sweet poem; when, at his word, you wished to take Sita back, she entered the earth. Then Time came asking for you; Lakshmana was given up on that pretext, and you went to heaven with all your people who drowned themselves in the Sarayu, and reached your own primal abode, Vaikuntha.

This human incarnation of yours was surely to teach people that too much attachment to desire, or even to duty, brings the pain of separation and even the abandoning of the innocent. Otherwise, how could your mind, which knows only the Self, be disturbed, Chakrapani? You who are pure goodness, Lord of Guruvayur, shake off the pains of my illness.
