Long ago you were born to Atri and Anasuya as their son, named Datta. Weary of disciples clinging to you, you roamed at ease with your consort. Seen by your great devotee, the Haihaya king Kartavirya Arjuna, you gave him boons such as the eight powers, and in the end death at your own hands.

Then, to make that boon to Arjuna come true, to destroy the whole race of kings who bowed only to power and hated the Brahmins, and to lighten the earth’s burden, you were born, O Hari, in Bhrigu’s line to Jamadagni and Renuka as Rama, the youngest of their sons, and brought your parents joy.

Having learned the Vedas, at fourteen you obeyed your angry father’s command and beheaded your mother, who had been briefly drawn to the gandharva king, along with your brothers who had refused him. Then from your calmed father you won the boon of their return to life, and your mother too gave you boons.

You left your hermitage, where your father had brought the heavenly cow by his prayers to please your mother, and at Bhrigu’s word worshipped Shiva on the Himalaya. You received his axe, slew the demons he named and gained great weapons; then, befriending the sage Akritavrana, you returned home.

Arjuna came hunting and was honoured by your father with the riches of the heavenly cow. Back in his city, on an evil counsellor’s advice, he foolishly sent his minister to buy the cow; when the sage refused, his men took the sage’s life, the enraged cow crushed their army, yet the calf was carried away.

Your anger stirred by the words of your father, whom Shukra had revived, you took up the bow, axe and arrows that Mahodara brought when you called him to mind, mounted a chariot with its driver along with your friend, and entered Mahishmati. With his thousand glorious arms, which had playfully held back the Narmada and humbled Ravana’s pride, he hurled many weapons, and you blocked them all. When even the Vishnu discus failed against you, he knew you to be Hari and meditated on you with joy; you slew him, cleansed of every fault, and he reached your supreme abode.

Later, when the vengeful sons of the Haihaya killed your father, and you saw Renuka beat her breast again and again, you took a terrible vow. With chariot and weapons summoned by meditation, you cut down with axe and arrows the Brahmin-hating kshatriyas in every direction, and left the earth without kshatriyas.

Restoring your father to life, you conquered the royal race twenty-one times and satisfied your ancestors in the great lakes of blood at Samantapanchaka. At a sacrifice you gave the earth to Kashyapa and others; and when you fought Salva again, the Kumaras stopped you, saying Krishna would slay him.

You laid down your weapons and did penance on Mount Mahendra. When the ascetics saw the land up to Gokarna sunk again under the sea and appealed to you, you set the fire weapon on your bow; the frightened sea drew back as you hurled your ladle, and you raised up Kerala. O lord of the Bhrigus, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
