Gudham vasudevagira kartum te nishkriyasya samskaran, hridgatahoratatvo gargamunistvadgriham vibho gatavan.

To perform in secret, at Vasudeva’s request, the childhood rites for you, who are beyond all action, the sage Garga, who knew the science of the stars by heart, came to your home, Lord.

Nandotha nanditatma vrindishtam manayannamum yaminam, mandasmitardramuche tvatsamskaran vidhatumutsukadhih.

Nanda, overjoyed, honoured this most revered of ascetics and, eager to have your rites performed, spoke to him gently with a soft smile.

Yaduvamshacharyatvat sunibhritamidamarya karyamiti kathayan, gargo nirgatapulakashchakre tava sagrajasya namani.

Saying, ‘Noble one, since I am the priest of the Yadava clan, this must be done very quietly,’ Garga, thrilled with joy, gave names to you and your elder brother.

Kathamasya nama kurve sahasranamno hyanantanamno va, iti nunam gargamunishchakre tava nama nama rahasi vibho.

‘How can I name one who has a thousand names, or rather endless names?’ Surely thinking this, Garga gave you a name in private, Lord, just for form’s sake.

Krishidhatunakarabhyam sattanandatmatam kilabhilapat, jagadaghakarshitvam va kathayadrishih krishnanama te vyatanot.

Pointing to your nature as being and bliss, through the root ‘krish’ and the syllable ‘na’, or to your power to draw away the world’s sins, the sage gave you the name Krishna.

Anyamshcha namabhedan vyakurvannagraje cha ramadin, atimanushanubhavam nyagadattvamaprakashayanpitre.

Explaining your other names too, and names like Rama for your elder brother, he told your father of your more-than-human power without fully revealing who you are.

‘Whoever loves your son will never again be deluded by the sorrows of illusion; whoever turns against him will perish.’ So the great sage spoke of your greatness.

Jeshyati bahutaradaityan neshyati nijabandhulokamamalapadam, shroshyati suvimalakirtirasyeti bhavadvibhutimrishiruche.

‘He will conquer many demons, lead his own people to the pure state, and they will hear of his spotless fame.’ So the sage spoke of your glory.

Amunaiva sarvadurgam taritastha kritasthamatra tishthadhvam, harirevetyanabhilapannityadi tvamavarnayat sa munih.

‘Through him alone you will cross every hardship; trust in him and live here at ease.’ Without saying outright, ‘He is Hari himself,’ the sage described you in ways like these.

Gargetha nirgatesmin nanditanandadinandyamanastvam, madgadamudgatakaruno nirgamaya shrimarutpuradhisha.

When Garga had gone, you were cherished by the delighted Nanda and the others. Let your compassion rise, Lord of Guruvayur, and drive away my illness.
