O Murari, you and Balarama crawled on hands and knees, adorning every corner of the house; moving your lotus feet, delighted by the sweet tinkle of your anklets, you went about charmingly and fast.

Smiling softly, little teeth just showing, hair falling over your faces, your lotus feet in view, bangles slipping down your arms to your wrists, you two stole the hearts of all who watched.

When the crowd followed you, eyes eager with delight, you two would make some sound, laugh and run, then turn your lotus faces to look back. O Vasudeva, what delight did you not give?

Tumbling as you ran, getting up smeared with mud, you two were saluted with smiles by the spotless sages in heaven; then your mothers quickly picked you up with love, hugged you again and again, and kissed you.

Then, walking now, playing with the children near the houses, full of childish mischief, chasing the household parrots, cats and calves, you were somehow held back by the laughing cowherds.

Wherever you went with Balarama, the gopis’ eyes fell helplessly upon you; forgetting housework, children and servants, O slayer of Mura, they were always deeply stirred.

Wanting the fresh butter the gopis gave, singing sweet words, sometimes dancing gently, eating the ghee offered by kind young women, sometimes you drank freshly boiled milk as well.

Perhaps you thought: I already had to beg at Bali’s house; I will not beg again here before these women. Is that why, O Lord, you gave up asking and stole the curd and ghee in your charming thieving way?

When you stole the curd and ghee, the hearts of the cowherd women had no room for anger or sorrow, for you stole their hearts too and set them in an ocean of joy. O Lord of Guruvayur, ease my illnesses.
