Samprapto mathuram dinardhavigame tatrantarasmin vasannarame vihitashanah sakhijanairyatah purimikshitum, prapo rajapatham chirashrutidhritavyalokakautuhalastripumsodyadaganyapunyanigalairakrishyamano nu kim.

Reaching Mathura in the afternoon, you rested in a garden there, ate, and went with your friends to see the city. You came onto the royal road, as if drawn by the countless merits of the men and women who had long heard of you and longed to see you.

Tvatpadadyutivatsaragasubhagastvanmurtivadyoshitah samprapta vilasatpayodhararucho lola bhavaddrishtivat, harinyastvadurah sthalivadayi te mandasmitapraudhivannairmalyollasitah kachaugharuchivadrajatkalapashritah.

Women came out who seemed to mirror you: rosy like the glow of your feet, lovely like your form, bright like your shining clouds of grace, restless like your glances, captivating like your chest, radiant with purity like your gentle smile, and adorned with ornaments like your peacock-crowned hair.

Tasamakalayannapangavalanairmodam praharshadbhutavyaloleshu janeshu tatra rajakam kanchitpatim prarthayan, kaste dasyati rajakiyavasanam yahiti tenoditah sadyastasya karena shirshamahrithah sopyapa punyam gatim.

Taking in their delight with your sidelong glances, as the people swayed in joy and wonder, you asked a washerman for clothes. “Who will give you the king’s garments? Be off!” he said, and at once you struck off his head with your hand; even he attained a blessed end.

Bhuyo vayakamekamayatamatim toshena veshochitam dashvamsam svapadam ninetha sukritam ko veda jivatmanam, malabhih stabakaih stavairapi punarmalakrita manito bhaktim tena vritam dideshitha param lakshmim cha lakshmipate.

Then a wise weaver gladly gave you fitting clothes, and you led him to your own abode; who can know the merit of souls? The garland-maker honoured you with garlands, bouquets and praise, and to him you granted the supreme devotion he chose, and wealth as well, Lord of Lakshmi.

Kubjamabjavilochanam pathi punardrishtvangarage taya datte sadhu kilangaragamadadastasya mahantam hridi, chittasthamrijutamatha prathayitum gatrepi tasyah sphutam grihnan manjukarena tamudanayastavajjagatsundarim.

On the road you then saw lotus-eyed Kubja, the hunchbacked woman. When she gave you fragrant paste, you gave her heart a great love in return. Then, to show plainly in her body the straightness that was in her heart, you took her with your lovely hand and lifted her, making her the most beautiful woman in the world.

Tavannishchitavaibhavastava vibho natyantapapa jana yatkinchiddadate sma shaktyanugunam tambulamalyadikam, grihnanah kusumadi kinchana tada marge nibaddhanjalirnatishtham bata ha yatodya vipulamartim vrajami prabho.

Then the people, not too sinful and sure of your greatness, Lord, gave what they could: betel, garlands and the like. Alas, I was not standing on that road then with folded hands, offering a few flowers; that is why I suffer so greatly today, Lord.

Though you left her saying, “I will come,” the woman who gave you the paste watched you go from afar with longing as you entered the city gate. Your fame had already gone inside, flowing as it were as the milk from the breasts of Devaki, overjoyed at guessing your arrival from the uproar.

Entering the festive city, you went to the hall of the bow; the guards, held back by your sweetness or your splendour, kept their distance. Saying “It’s mine!” in front of them, you took up the great bow, garlanded and worshipped, strung it, drew it and broke it.

The great crash of the breaking bow, like the opening trumpet of the next day’s festival of Kamsa’s end, thrilled the gods, Lord. And Kamsa’s trembling at that sound was made worse by the cries of the guards you struck down hard with the two halves of the bow.

Your glory seen by the good with love and by the wicked with fear, you wandered the city admiring its splendour, and in the evening went back to the garden. Telling Shridama of your pain at being parted from Radha, you slept, glad that your incarnation’s work was moving forward. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
