You are Brahman itself, great and glorious one. Among letters you are A, among mantras Om, among kings Manu, among sages Bhrigu and Narada; among demons Prahlada, among cattle the wish-cow Surabhi, among birds Garuda, among serpents Ananta, and among rivers the heavenly Ganga, O you whose form is the universe.

Among those devoted to brahmins you are Bali, among offerings the offering of chanting, among heroes Arjuna, among devotees Uddhava; you are the strength of the strong and the brilliance of the brilliant. Your glories have no end; everything excellent is you. You are the soul and primal nature; nothing in this world exists apart from you.

Doing the duties of their station and stage of life as the Vedas prescribe, devoted to you, and slowly letting them go as dispassion grows within, people attain the pure knowledge of you: ‘I am the Supreme’, which is being, awareness and joy, one within all things that seem different, without root, the root of the universe.

Knowledge, action and devotion, these three lead to you. Those weary of every worldly pleasure are fit for the path of knowledge; for the attached there is the path of action offered to you; and for those neither too attached nor too detached, who delight in you, there is the path of devotion.

In the human world, by good deeds, people soon gain knowledge or devotion to you; so even those in heaven or hell long to be born there, Lord. Since by fortune I have entered a human body, a boat across the ocean of worldly life, make the guru its helmsman, be the favourable wind, and carry me across.

Those who seek the unmanifest through scripture and reasoning, hungry only for knowledge, struggle hard and reach success only after many births. The path of action too is far from the highest goal; but this path of devotion is a delight from the very start and leads quickly to you. May it grow in me.

The sage cautions against straining for knowledge alone; one who hears the truth of Brahman and takes deep refuge in devotion to your feet has liberation within reach. Meditation on you is also hard, because the mind is restless; but with practice, helped by your grace and your beauty, it can soon be tamed.

I am weary of the very hard path of ritual action, and I have deep faith in your stories, yet, Lord of the world, I cannot give up my desires. So, with firm resolve and my mind set on you, living with them while seeing their faults, let me nourish devotion alone; with you in my heart, attachments will soon fall away.

Long ago a brahmin, his mind made pure by losing the wealth he had toiled for, harassed by crowds, said: ‘Not people, nor time, karma or the planets, but my own mind is the cause of my sorrow, imagining qualities and driving everything.’ Saying this he grew calm and reached you. Lord, give me that same peace of mind.

Long ago Pururavas, helplessly in love with Urvashi, served her for a long time, then grew deeply weary and sang, ‘This pleasure is a petty thing’; finding devotion to you, he was fulfilled and lived happily. In the same way, shake off my attachments and make me the crown of devotees, Lord of Guruvayur, and stop my illnesses.
