In whom all this shines, from whom it came, by whom it exists, who is all this and yet beyond it, by whose light everything is lit; who is far beyond words and beyond the mind, whose true nature even gods and great sages do not know, let alone others: Krishna, to you I bow.

In you there is truly no birth, action, name, virtue or fault; yet for the good of the worlds you take these on yourself through maya. Formless, yet holding all powers, you appear in many forms, wondrous one. Vishnu, abode of liberation, full of supreme bliss, to you I bow.

Your form, they say, is neither animal nor human, god nor demon, female nor male; not substance, action, class or quality, not being or non-being. What remains when a hundred Vedas have denied all this, grasped only by hint and with difficulty, shines as supreme bliss: to you I bow.

Reflected in maya, you create the whole world, like a dream or a fancy, through the cosmic intellect, the ego, the subtle elements, the elements and the senses. Then by the power of time you draw it all back into yourself, like a tortoise drawing in its limbs, and when deep darkness falls you alone shine, untouched by it: to you I bow.

Some call you, the one cause of the universe, the sacred Word, some karma, some the atom, some time, Lord; since you are everything, you are imagined in every way. But the truth Vedanta sings of as the Purusha, the supreme conscious Self, who by a mere glance sets primal nature and its changes in motion: Krishna, to you I bow.

Ignorance, whose nature can’t be called real, unreal or both, makes the world appear, like a rope taken for a snake. When your grace flows, that same ignorance, through a few words of scripture, turns into knowledge and becomes an axe that at once cuts down the forest of worldly life: to you I bow.

Like gold in ornaments, or clay in pots and plates, your one form without a second shines even now when we reflect on the truth. As the dreamer wakes, or the old rope is seen when darkness lifts, so with knowledge it clearly comes to light: Krishna, to you I bow.

In awe of you the sun rises, fire burns, the wind blows, and so do the others; in awe of you Brahma and the gods bring their due offerings in season. You first raised them to their places and later remove them. Krishna, controller of the universe, we too bow to you.

Day and night I worship you by the three paths of yoga: you who sustain the three worlds made of the three qualities; the one meaning of Om’s three sounds; the oneness of the three gods; whose nature the three Vedas sing; who know the three states; who are born in three ages; who covered the universe in three strides; who are undivided across past, present and future.

Your wheel of time, unstoppable, with twelve spokes and three hundred and sixty joints, whirling with fierce speed and rushing on, cutting through the world moment by moment, let it not trouble me, who hold on to your feet alone. Vishnu, ocean of compassion, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from every illness.
