विश्वेश्वर पदपदम की, रज निज शीश लगाय।
अन्नपूर्णे तव सुयश, बरनौं कवि मतिलाय॥Vishveshvar padpadam ki, raj nij sheesh lagay. Annapoorne tav suyash, baranau kavi matilay.
Placing the dust of Vishveshvar’s lotus feet on my head, I, the poet, set my mind to describing your glory, Annapurna.
विश्वेश्वर के चरण-कमलों की धूल अपने सिर पर लगाकर, हे अन्नपूर्णा, मैं कवि मन लगाकर आपके सुयश का वर्णन करता हूँ।

नित्य आनंद करिणी माता।
वर अरु अभय भाव प्रख्याता॥Nitya anand karini Mata. Var aru abhay bhaav prakhyata.
Mother, you give constant joy, and you are famed for granting boons and fearlessness.
हे माता, आप नित्य आनंद देने वाली हैं और वर व अभय देने के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं।

जय सौंदर्य सिंधु जग-जननी।
अखिल पाप हर भव भय हरनी॥Jai saundarya sindhu jag-janani. Akhil paap har bhav bhay harani.
Victory to you, ocean of beauty, Mother of the world, who take away every sin and the fear of worldly life.
सुंदरता की सागर जगजननी की जय हो, जो सब पाप और संसार का भय हर लेती हैं।

श्वेत बदन पर श्वेत बसन पुनि।
संतन तुव पद सेवत ऋषिमुनि॥Shvet badan par shvet basan puni. Santan tuv pad sevat rishimuni.
Fair of body and dressed in white, your feet are served by saints, seers and sages.
गोरे शरीर पर आप सफेद वस्त्र धारण करती हैं; संत, ऋषि और मुनि आपके चरणों की सेवा करते हैं।

काशी पुराधीश्वरी माता।
माहेश्वरी सकल जग त्राता॥Kashi puradhishvari Mata. Maheshvari sakal jag trata.
Mother, queen of the city of Kashi, Maheshvari, protector of the whole world.
हे माता, आप काशी नगरी की अधीश्वरी, माहेश्वरी और सारे जगत की रक्षा करने वाली हैं।

वृषभारूढ़ नाम रुद्राणी।
विश्व विहारिणि जय कल्याणी॥Vrishbharoodh naam Rudrani. Vishva viharini jai Kalyani.
Riding the bull, you are called Rudrani; victory to you, auspicious one, who move through the whole universe.
बैल पर सवार आप रुद्राणी कहलाती हैं; विश्व में विहार करने वाली कल्याणी, आपकी जय हो।

पतिदेवता सुतीत शिरोमणि।
पदवी प्राप्त कीन्ह गिरि-नंदिनि॥Patidevata suteet shiromani. Padvi prapt keenh Giri-nandini.
Daughter of the mountain, you earned the title of crown jewel among devoted wives.
हे गिरिनंदिनी, आपने पतिव्रताओं में शिरोमणि की पदवी पाई।

पति विछोह दुःख सहि नहिं पावा।
योग अग्नि तब बदन जरावा॥Pati vichhoh dukh sahi nahin paava. Yog agni tab badan jarava.
Unable to bear the pain of separation from your husband, you burned your body in the fire of yoga.
पति से बिछड़ने का दुःख आप सह न सकीं, तब आपने योग-अग्नि में अपना शरीर जला दिया।

देह तजत शिव-चरण सनेहू।
राखेहु जात हिमगिरि-गेहू॥Deh tajat Shiv-charan sanehu. Raakhehu jaat Himgiri-gehu.
Even as you left your body you kept your love for Shiva’s feet, and were born again in the home of the Himalaya.
देह त्यागते समय भी आपने शिव के चरणों का प्रेम बनाए रखा और हिमालय के घर जन्म लिया।

प्रकटी गिरिजा नाम धरायो।
अति आनंद भवन मँह छायो॥Prakati Girija naam dharayo. Ati anand bhavan manh chhayo.
You appeared and were named Girija, and great joy filled the house.
आप प्रकट हुईं और गिरिजा नाम रखा गया; भवन में बहुत आनंद छा गया।

नारद ने तब तोहिं भरमायहु।
ब्याह करन हित पाठ पढ़ायहु॥Narad ne tab tohin bharmayahu. Byaah karan hit paath padhayahu.
Then Narada tried to confuse you, giving you advice about whom to marry.
तब नारद ने आपको भ्रम में डाला और विवाह के बारे में पाठ पढ़ाया।

ब्रह्मा-वरुण-कुबेर गनाये।
देवराज आदिक कहि गाये॥Brahma-Varun-Kuber ganaye. Devraj aadik kahi gaaye.
He named Brahma, Varuna and Kubera, and sang the praises of Indra and the other gods.
उन्होंने ब्रह्मा, वरुण और कुबेर गिनाए और इंद्र आदि देवताओं की प्रशंसा की।

सब देवन को सुजस बखानी।
मति पलटन की मन मँह ठानी॥Sab devan ko sujas bakhani. Mati paltan ki man manh thani.
Praising the glory of all the gods, he set his mind on changing yours.
सब देवताओं का सुयश बखानकर उन्होंने आपका मन बदलने की ठान ली।

अचल रहीं तुम प्रण पर धन्या।
कीन्हीं सिद्ध हिमाचल कन्या॥Achal raheen tum pran par dhanya. Keenhin siddh Himachal kanya.
Blessed one, you stayed firm in your vow; daughter of the Himalaya, you proved it true.
हे धन्य, आप अपने प्रण पर अटल रहीं; हिमाचल की कन्या ने अपना प्रण सिद्ध किया।

निज कौ तब नारद घबराये।
तब प्रण पूरण मंत्र पढ़ाये॥Nij kau tab Narad ghabraye. Tab pran pooran mantra padhaye.
Then Narada himself grew anxious, and taught you a mantra to fulfil your vow.
तब नारद स्वयं घबरा गए और आपका प्रण पूरा करने के लिए मंत्र सिखाया।

करन हेतु तप तोहिं उपदेशेउ।
संत बचन तुम सत्य परेखेहु॥Karan hetu tap tohin updeshehu. Sant bachan tum satya parekhehu.
He told you to do penance to achieve it, and you held the saint’s words to be true.
उन्होंने इसके लिए आपको तप करने का उपदेश दिया, और आपने संत के वचन को सत्य माना।

गगनगिरा सुनि टरी न टारे।
ब्रह्मा तब तुव पास पधारे॥Gagangira suni tari na taare. Brahma tab tuv paas padhare.
Even hearing a voice from the sky you would not be moved; then Brahma came to you.
आकाशवाणी सुनकर भी आप टस से मस न हुईं; तब ब्रह्मा आपके पास आए।

कहेउ पुत्रि वर माँगु अनूपा।
देहुँ आज तुव मति अनुरूपा॥Kaheu putri var maangu anupa. Dehun aaj tuv mati anuroopa.
He said: daughter, ask for a matchless boon; today I will grant whatever your heart desires.
उन्होंने कहा: हे पुत्री, कोई अनुपम वर माँगो; आज मैं तुम्हारी इच्छा के अनुसार दूँगा।

तुम तप कीन्ह अलौकिक भारी।
कष्ट उठायहु अति सुकुमारी॥Tum tap keenh alaukik bhari. Kasht uthayahu ati sukumari.
You have done a great, unearthly penance, tender one, and endured much hardship.
हे सुकुमारी, तुमने अलौकिक और भारी तप किया है और बहुत कष्ट उठाया है।

अब संदेह छाँड़ि कछु मोसों।
है सौगंध नहीं छल तोसों॥Ab sandeh chhandi kachhu moson. Hai saugandh nahin chhal toson.
Now put aside all doubt about me; I swear there is no deceit in what I say.
अब मुझ पर कोई संदेह छोड़ दो; सौगंध है, मैं तुमसे छल नहीं कर रहा।

करत वेद विद ब्रह्मा जानहु।
वचन मोर यह सांचा मानहु॥Karat Ved vid Brahma janahu. Vachan mor yah saancha manahu.
Know me as Brahma, who knows the Vedas; take my word as true.
मुझे वेदों को जानने वाला ब्रह्मा जानो; मेरी यह बात सच मानो।

तजि संकोच कहहु निज इच्छा।
देहौं मैं मनमानी भिक्षा॥Taji sankoch kahahu nij ichchha. Dehaun main manmani bhiksha.
Tell me your wish without hesitation, and I will grant whatever you ask.
संकोच छोड़कर अपनी इच्छा कहो, मैं तुम्हें मनचाहा दान दूँगा।

सुनि ब्रह्मा की मधुरी बानी।
मुख सों कछु मुसुकाय भवानी॥Suni Brahma ki madhuri baani. Mukh son kachhu musukay Bhavani.
Hearing Brahma’s sweet words, Bhavani smiled a little.
ब्रह्मा की मधुर वाणी सुनकर भवानी थोड़ा मुस्कुराईं।

बोली तुम का कहहु विधाता।
तुम तो जगके स्रष्टाधाता॥Boli tum ka kahahu Vidhata. Tum to jagke srashtadhata.
She said: what are you asking, Creator? You are the maker and sustainer of the world.
वे बोलीं: हे विधाता, आप क्या पूछते हैं? आप तो जगत के रचयिता और पालनहार हैं।

मम कामना गुप्त नहिं तोंसों।
कहवावा चाहहु का मोसों॥Mam kamana gupt nahin tonson. Kahvava chahahu ka moson.
My desire is not hidden from you; why do you want me to say it?
मेरी कामना आपसे छिपी नहीं है; आप मुझसे क्या कहलवाना चाहते हैं?

दक्ष यज्ञ महँ मरती बारा।
शंभुनाथ पुनि होहिं हमारा॥Daksh yagya mahan marti baara. Shambhunath puni hohin hamara.
When I died at Daksha’s sacrifice, I wished that Lord Shambhu would be mine again.
दक्ष के यज्ञ में मरते समय मैंने चाहा था कि शंभुनाथ फिर से मेरे हों।

सो अब मिलहिं मोहिं मनभाये।
कहि तथास्तु विधि धाम सिधाये॥So ab milahin mohin manbhaye. Kahi tathastu Vidhi dham sidhaye.
May he, my heart’s desire, now be mine. Brahma said, so be it, and returned to his abode.
अब वे मनभावन मुझे मिलें। ब्रह्मा तथास्तु कहकर अपने धाम चले गए।

तब गिरिजा शंकर तव भयऊ।
फल कामना संशयो गयऊ॥Tab Girija Shankar tav bhayau. Phal kamana sanshayo gayau.
Then, Girija, Shankar became yours, and all doubt about your wish being fulfilled was gone.
तब, हे गिरिजा, शंकर आपके हो गए और कामना पूरी होने का संशय मिट गया।

चन्द्रकोटि रवि कोटि प्रकाशा।
तब आनन महँ करत निवासा॥Chandrakoti Ravi koti prakasha. Tab aanan manh karat nivasa.
The light of a million moons and a million suns dwells in your face.
करोड़ों चंद्रमाओं और करोड़ों सूर्यों का प्रकाश आपके मुख में निवास करता है।

माला पुस्तक अंकुश सोहै।
कर मँह अपर पाश मन मोहै॥Mala pustak ankush sohai. Kar manh apar paash man mohai.
A rosary, a book and a goad shine in your hands, and in another hand a noose that charms the heart.
आपके हाथों में माला, पुस्तक और अंकुश शोभित हैं, और दूसरे हाथ में पाश मन मोह लेता है।

अन्नपूर्णे सदापूर्णे।
अज-अनवद्य अनंत पूर्णे॥Annapoorne sadapoorne. Aj-anavadya anant poorne.
Annapurna, ever full; unborn, faultless, infinite and complete.
हे अन्नपूर्णा, सदा पूर्ण रहने वाली; आप अजन्मा, निर्दोष, अनंत और पूर्ण हैं।

कृपा सागरी क्षेमंकरि माँ।
भव-विभूति आनंद भरी माँ॥Kripa sagari kshemankari Maa. Bhav-vibhooti anand bhari Maa.
Mother, ocean of mercy, giver of well-being, full of the joy and riches of the world.
हे माँ, आप कृपा की सागर और कल्याण करने वाली हैं; संसार के वैभव और आनंद से भरी हैं।

कमल विलोचन विलसित भाले।
देवि कालिके चण्डि कराले॥Kamal vilochan vilasit bhaale. Devi Kalike Chandi karale.
With lotus eyes and a shining forehead, you are also the goddess Kalika, Chandi, the fearsome one.
कमल जैसी आँखों और चमकते माथे वाली, आप ही देवी कालिका और विकराल चंडी हैं।

तुम कैलास माँहि ह्वै गिरिजा।
विलसी आनंद साथ सिंधुजा॥Tum Kailas manhi hvai Girija. Vilasi anand saath Sindhuja.
In Kailash you live joyfully as Girija, and you are also Lakshmi, born of the ocean.
कैलाश में आप गिरिजा बनकर आनंद से रहती हैं, और आप ही समुद्र से जन्मी लक्ष्मी भी हैं।

स्वर्ग-महालक्ष्मी कहलायी।
मर्त्य-लोक लक्ष्मी पद पायी॥Svarg-Mahalakshmi kahlayi. Martya-lok Lakshmi pad paayi.
In heaven you are called Mahalakshmi, and in the mortal world you hold the place of Lakshmi.
स्वर्ग में आप महालक्ष्मी कहलाईं और मृत्युलोक में लक्ष्मी का पद पाया।

विलसी सब मँह सर्व सरूपा।
सेवत तोहिं अमर पुर-भूपा॥Vilasi sab manh sarv saroopa. Sevat tohin amar pur-bhoopa.
You shine in everything, taking every form, and the king of the immortals serves you.
आप सबमें सब रूपों में विराजती हैं, और देवताओं के राजा इंद्र आपकी सेवा करते हैं।

जो पढ़िहहिं यह तव चालीसा।
फल पइहहिं शुभ साखी ईसा॥Jo padhihahin yah tav chalisa. Phal paihahin shubh saakhi Eesa.
Whoever reads this Chalisa of yours will receive blessed results; the Lord is witness.
जो आपकी यह चालीसा पढ़ेंगे, वे शुभ फल पाएँगे; ईश्वर इसके साक्षी हैं।

प्रात समय जो जन मन लायो।
पढ़िहहिं भक्ति सुरुचि अधिकायो॥Praat samay jo jan man laayo. Padhihahin bhakti suruchi adhikaayo.
Those who read it in the morning with an attentive mind will grow in devotion and good taste.
जो लोग सुबह मन लगाकर इसे पढ़ेंगे, उनकी भक्ति और सद्रुचि बढ़ेगी।

स्त्री कलत्र पति मित्र-पुत्र युत।
परमैश्वर्य लाभ लहि अद्भुत॥Stree kalatra pati mitra-putra yut. Paramaishvarya laabh lahi adbhut.
With wife or husband, friends and children, they will gain wonderful, supreme prosperity.
पत्नी, पति, मित्र और पुत्रों सहित वे अद्भुत परम ऐश्वर्य पाएँगे।

राज विमुख को राज दिवावै।
जस तेरो जन-सुजस बढ़ावै॥Raaj vimukh ko raaj divaavai. Jas tero jan-sujas badhaavai.
It restores a kingdom to one who has lost it, and your glory spreads your devotee’s good name.
यह राज्य खो चुके को राज्य दिलाता है, और आपका यश भक्त का सुयश बढ़ाता है।

पाठ महा मुद मंगल दाता।
भक्त मनोवांछित निधि पाता॥Paath maha mud mangal daata. Bhakt manovanchhit nidhi paata.
This recitation gives great joy and blessing, and the devotee gains the treasure they long for.
यह पाठ महान आनंद और मंगल देने वाला है; भक्त मनचाही निधि पाता है।

जो यह चालीसा सुभग, पढ़ि नावैंगे माथ।
तिनके कारज सिद्ध सब, साखी काशी नाथ॥Jo yah chalisa subhag, padhi naavainge maath. Tinke kaaraj siddh sab, saakhi Kashi Naath.
Whoever reads this lovely Chalisa and bows their head will have all their work fulfilled; the Lord of Kashi is witness.
जो यह सुंदर चालीसा पढ़कर माथा नवाएँगे, उनके सब काम सिद्ध होंगे; काशीनाथ इसके साक्षी हैं।
