Bhaja Govindam

Bhaja govindam bhaja govindam govindam bhaja mudhamate, samprapte sannihite kale nahi nahi rakshati dukrinkarane.

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, foolish mind. When the appointed time of death arrives, rules of grammar will never save you.

Mudha jahihi dhanagamatrishnam kuru sadbuddhim manasi vitrishnam, yallabhase nijakarmopattam vittam tena vinodaya chittam.

Fool, give up the craving to pile up wealth. Turn your mind to what is good, free of craving. Be content with whatever money your own work brings you.

Naristanabharanabhidesham drishtva ma ga mohavesham, etanmamsavasadivikaram manasi vichintaya varam varam.

Don’t be swept into infatuation by the sight of a woman’s body. It is only a change of flesh and fat; reflect on this again and again.

Nalinidalagatajalamatitaralam tadvajjivitamatishayachapalam, viddhi vyadhyabhimanagrastam lokam shokahatam cha samastam.

Life is as unsteady as a drop of water trembling on a lotus leaf. Know that the whole world is gripped by disease and pride, and struck by sorrow.

Yavadvittoparjanasaktastavannijaparivaro raktah, pashchajjivati jarjaradehe vartam kopi na prichchhati gehe.

As long as you can earn, your family is fond of you. Later, when you live on in a worn-out body, no one at home even asks how you are.

Yavatpavano nivasati dehe tavatprichchhati kushalam gehe, gatavati vayau dehapaye bharya bibhyati tasminkaye.

As long as breath dwells in the body, people at home ask after your welfare. Once the breath has left and the body falls, even your wife is afraid of that corpse.

Balastavatkridasaktastarunastavattarunisaktah, vriddhastavachchintasaktah parame brahmani kopi na saktah.

The child is absorbed in play, the youth in young women, the old in worries; no one is absorbed in the supreme Brahman.

Ka te kanta kaste putrah samsaroyamativa vichitrah, kasya tvam va kuta ayatastattvam chintaya tadiha bhratah.

Who is your wife, who is your son? This world is very strange. Whose are you, and where have you come from? Think about this truth, brother.

Satsangatve nissangatvam nissangatve nirmohatvam, nirmohatve nishchalatattvam nishchalatattve jivanmuktih.

Good company brings detachment; detachment brings freedom from delusion; freedom from delusion brings an unshakable hold on truth; and that brings liberation in this very life.

Vayasi gate kah kamavikarah shushke nire kah kasarah, kshine vitte kah parivaro jnate tattve kah samsarah.

When youth is gone, where is lust? When the water dries up, where is the lake? When wealth is spent, where is the family? When the truth is known, where is the world of birth and death?

Ma kuru dhanajanayauvanagarvam harati nimeshatkalah sarvam, mayamayamidamakhilam hitva brahmapadam tvam pravisha viditva.

Don’t be proud of wealth, friends or youth; time takes them all away in an instant. Give up this whole world of illusion, know the truth, and enter the state of Brahman.

Dinayaminyau sayam pratah shishiravasantau punarayatah, kalah kridati gachchhatyayustadapi na munchatyashavayuh.

Day and night, dusk and dawn, winter and spring come again and again. Time plays and life slips away, yet the wind of desire never lets go.

    Dvadashamanjarikabhirasheshah kathito vaiyakaranasyaishah, upadeshobhudvidyanipunaih shrimachchhankarabhagavachcharanaih.

This whole teaching, in a garland of twelve verses, was given to a grammarian by the learned and revered Shankara.

Ka te kanta dhanagatachinta vatula kim tava nasti niyanta, trijagati sajjanasangatireka bhavati bhavarnavatarane nauka.

Why worry about your wife and your wealth, you crazed one? Is there no one who governs you? In all three worlds, only the company of good people is a boat to cross the ocean of birth and death.

One wears matted locks, one shaves his head, one plucks out his hair, another dresses up in ochre robes. The fool sees yet does not see; all these costumes are just to fill the belly.

Angam galitam palitam mundam dashanavihinam jatam tundam, vriddho yati grihitva dandam tadapi na munchatyashapindam.

The body has withered, the head turned grey, the mouth lost its teeth. The old man walks leaning on a stick, yet still he won’t let go of his bundle of desires.

Agre vahnih prishthe bhanu ratrau chubukasamarpitajanuh, karatalabhikshastarutalavasastadapi na munchatyashapashah.

Fire in front, the sun at his back, at night knees pulled up to his chin; begging with his palms, living under a tree, yet the noose of desire does not let him go.

Kurute gangasagaragamanam vrataparipalanamathava danam, jnanavihinah sarvamatena muktim na bhajati janmashatena.

One may go on pilgrimage to where the Ganga meets the sea, keep vows or give in charity; but without knowledge, say all the schools, there is no liberation even in a hundred births.

Suramandiratarumulanivasah shayya bhutalamajinam vasah, sarvaparigrahabhogatyagah kasya sukham na karoti viragah.

Living in a temple or at the foot of a tree, the ground for a bed, a deerskin for clothing, giving up all possessions and pleasures: whom does such dispassion not make happy?

Yogarato va bhogarato va sangarato va sangavihinah, yasya brahmani ramate chittam nandati nandati nandatyeva.

Whether devoted to yoga or to pleasure, whether in company or alone, the one whose mind delights in Brahman is happy, happy, truly happy.

Bhagavadgita kinchidadhita gangajalalavakanika pita, sakridapi yena murarisamarcha kriyate tasya yamena na charcha.

One who has studied even a little of the Bhagavad Gita, sipped even a drop of Ganga water, and worshipped Murari, Krishna, even once, has nothing to fear from Yama, lord of death.

Punarapi jananam punarapi maranam punarapi jananijathare shayanam, iha samsare bahudustare kripayapare pahi murare.

Born again, dying again, lying again in a mother’s womb: this world is so hard to cross. Save me, Murari, in your boundless mercy.

Rathyacharpatavirachitakanthah punyapunyavivarjitapanthah, yogi yoganiyojitachitto ramate balonmattavadeva.

His cloak stitched from rags found in the street, walking a path beyond merit and sin, the yogi, his mind fixed in yoga, delights like a child or a carefree madman.

Kastvam koham kuta ayatah ka me janani ko me tatah, iti paribhavaya sarvamasaram vishvam tyaktva svapnavicharam.

Who are you, who am I, where did I come from? Who is my mother, who my father? Reflect like this, see the whole world as hollow, and leave it behind like a dream.

Tvayi mayi chanyatraiko vishnurvyartham kupyasi mayyasahishnuh, bhava samachittah sarvatra tvam vanchhasyachiradyadi vishnutvam.

In you, in me and everywhere else there is only one Vishnu; you are angry with me for nothing. If you want to reach Vishnu soon, keep an even mind toward everyone.

Shatrau mitre putre bandhau ma kuru yatnam vigrahasandhau, sarvasminnapi pashyatmanam sarvatrotsrija bhedajnanam.

Don’t strive to fight or make peace with enemy or friend, son or relative. See your own Self in everyone, and drop everywhere the ignorance that sees difference.

Kamam krodham lobham moham tyaktvatmanam bhavaya koham, atmajnanavihina mudhaste pachyante narakanigudhah.

Give up lust, anger, greed and delusion, and reflect within: who am I? Fools without knowledge of the Self are trapped and suffer as if in hell.

Geyam gitanamasahasram dhyeyam shripatirupamajasram, neyam sajjanasange chittam deyam dinajanaya cha vittam.

Sing the Gita and the thousand names; meditate always on the form of Vishnu, lord of Lakshmi; lead your mind to the company of the good; and give your wealth to those in need.

Sukhatah kriyate ramabhogah pashchaddhanta sharire rogah, yadyapi loke maranam sharanam tadapi na munchati papacharanam.

People chase pleasure with ease, and later, alas, the body falls sick. Though death is everyone’s final end, still they don’t give up their wrongdoing.

Arthamanartham bhavaya nityam nasti tatah sukhaleshah satyam, putradapi dhanabhajam bhitih sarvatraisha vihita ritih.

Always remember that wealth brings trouble; truly, there isn’t a trace of happiness in it. The rich fear even their own sons; this is how it goes everywhere.

Pranayamam pratyaharam nityanityavivekavicharam, japyasametasamadhividhanam kurvavadhanam mahadavadhanam.

Breath control, withdrawing the senses, discerning the eternal from the passing, and the practice of meditation with chanting: do these with care, with great care.

Gurucharanambujanirbharabhaktah samsaradachiradbhava muktah, sendriyamanasaniyamadevam drakshyasi nijahridayastham devam.

Be wholly devoted to the lotus feet of the guru, and be free of the world soon. By restraining the senses and the mind, you will see the God who dwells in your own heart.

Mudhah kashchana vaiyakarano dukrinkaranadhyayanadhurinah, shrimachchhankarabhagavachchhishyairbodhita asichchhodhitakaranah.

So a foolish grammarian, lost in learning rules of grammar, was taught by the disciples of the revered Shankara and had his senses set right.

Bhaja govindam bhaja govindam govindam bhaja mudhamate, namasmaranadanyamupayam nahi pashyamo bhavatarane.

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, foolish mind. Apart from remembering his name, we see no other way to cross the ocean of birth and death.
