श्री ब्रह्मा चालीसा

जय ब्रह्मा जय स्वयम्भू, चतुरानन सुखमूल।
करहु कृपा निज दास पै, रहहु सदा अनुकूल॥Jai Brahma jai Swayambhu, chaturanan sukhmool. Karahu kripa nij das pai, rahahu sada anukool.
Victory to Brahma, the self-born, the four-faced root of all happiness. Be kind to your servant and always look on me with favour.
स्वयंभू ब्रह्मा जी की जय हो, जो चार मुखों वाले और सुख के मूल हैं। अपने इस दास पर कृपा कीजिए और सदा प्रसन्न रहिए।

तुम सृजक ब्रह्माण्ड के, अज विधि धाता नाम।
विश्वविधाता कीजिये, जन पै कृपा ललाम॥Tum srijak brahmand ke, Aj Vidhi Dhata naam. Vishvavidhata kijiye, jan pai kripa lalam.
You are the creator of the universe, called Aja (the unborn), Vidhi and Dhata. Maker of the world, pour your lovely grace on your devotee.
आप ब्रह्माण्ड के रचयिता हैं; अज, विधि और धाता आपके नाम हैं। हे विश्व-विधाता, अपने भक्त पर सुंदर कृपा कीजिए।

जय जय कमलासन जगमूला।
रहहु सदा जनपै अनुकूला॥Jai jai Kamalasan jagmoola. Rahahu sada jan pai anukoola.
Victory, victory to you who sit on the lotus, the root of the world. Always be gracious to your devotees.
कमल पर विराजने वाले, जगत के मूल, आपकी जय हो, जय हो। अपने भक्तों पर सदा प्रसन्न रहिए।

रूप चतुर्भुज परम सुहावन।
तुम्हें अहैं चतुर्दिक आनन॥Roop chaturbhuj param suhavan. Tumhen ahain chaturdik aanan.
Your four-armed form is supremely beautiful, and you have faces turned to all four directions.
आपका चार भुजाओं वाला रूप अत्यंत सुहावना है, और चारों दिशाओं में आपके मुख हैं।

रक्तवर्ण तव सुभग शरीरा।
मस्तक जटाजूट गंभीरा॥Raktavarn tav subhag sharira. Mastak jatajoot gambhira.
Your graceful body is red in colour, and your head bears a great mass of matted hair.
आपका सुंदर शरीर लाल रंग का है और सिर पर घनी जटाएँ शोभित हैं।

ताके ऊपर मुकुट बिराजै।
दाढ़ी श्वेत महाछवि छाजै॥Take upar mukut biraje. Dadhi shvet mahachhavi chhaje.
A crown rests on top of it, and your white beard adds to your great splendour.
उसके ऊपर मुकुट विराजता है और सफ़ेद दाढ़ी आपकी महान शोभा बढ़ाती है।

श्वेतवस्त्र धारे तुम सुन्दर।
है यज्ञोपवीत अति मनहर॥Shvetvastra dhare tum sundar. Hai yagyopavit ati manhar.
You look beautiful dressed in white, and your sacred thread is most charming.
आप सफ़ेद वस्त्र धारण किए सुंदर लगते हैं और आपका यज्ञोपवीत (जनेऊ) अत्यंत मनमोहक है।

कानन कुण्डल सुभग बिराजहिं।
गल मोतिन की माला राजहिं॥Kanan kundal subhag birajahin. Gal motin ki mala rajahin.
Lovely earrings shine in your ears, and a string of pearls adorns your neck.
कानों में सुंदर कुंडल शोभित हैं और गले में मोतियों की माला सजी है।

चारिहु वेद तुम्हीं प्रगटाये।
दिव्य ज्ञान त्रिभुवनहिं सिखाये॥Charihu Ved tumhin pragtaye. Divya gyan tribhuvanahin sikhaye.
It was you who revealed the four Vedas and taught divine knowledge to the three worlds.
चारों वेद आपने ही प्रकट किए और तीनों लोकों को दिव्य ज्ञान सिखाया।

ब्रह्मलोक शुभ धाम तुम्हारा।
अखिल भुवन महँ यश बिस्तारा॥Brahmalok shubh dham tumhara. Akhil bhuvan mahan yash bistara.
Brahmaloka is your blessed home, and your fame spreads through all the worlds.
ब्रह्मलोक आपका शुभ धाम है और सारे लोकों में आपका यश फैला है।

अर्द्धांगिनि तव है सावित्री।
अपर नाम हिये गायत्री॥Arddhangini tav hai Savitri. Apar naam hiye Gayatri.
Savitri is your consort, who is also known by the name Gayatri.
सावित्री आपकी अर्धांगिनी हैं, जिनका दूसरा नाम गायत्री है।

सरस्वती तव सुता मनोहर।
वीणा वादिनि सब विधि सुन्दर॥Saraswati tav suta manohar. Veena vadini sab vidhi sundar.
Lovely Saraswati, who plays the veena and is beautiful in every way, is your daughter.
मनोहर सरस्वती आपकी पुत्री हैं, जो वीणा बजाती हैं और हर तरह से सुंदर हैं।

कमलासन पर रहे बिराजे।
तुम हरिभक्ति साज सब साजे॥Kamalasan par rahe biraje. Tum Haribhakti saj sab saje.
You remain seated on the lotus, fully adorned with devotion to Hari.
आप कमल के आसन पर विराजमान रहते हैं और हरि-भक्ति के सब साज से सजे हैं।

क्षीर सिन्धु सोवत सुरभूपा।
नाभि कमल भो प्रगट अनूपा॥Ksheer sindhu sovat surbhoopa. Nabhi kamal bho pragat anoopa.
As Vishnu, king of the gods, slept on the ocean of milk, a matchless lotus rose from his navel.
देवताओं के राजा विष्णु क्षीरसागर में सो रहे थे, तब उनकी नाभि से एक अनुपम कमल प्रकट हुआ।

तेहि पर तुम आसीन कृपाला।
सदा करहु सन्तन प्रतिपाला॥Tehi par tum aasin kripala. Sada karahu santan pratipala.
On it you sit, merciful one, ever caring for the saints.
हे कृपालु, आप उसी कमल पर बैठे हैं और सदा संतों का पालन करते हैं।

एक बार की कथा प्रचारी।
तुम कहँ मोह भयेउ मन भारी॥Ek bar ki katha prachari. Tum kahan moh bhayeu man bhari.
A story is told that once your mind was gripped by a great delusion.
एक बार की कथा प्रसिद्ध है कि आपके मन में भारी मोह उत्पन्न हो गया।

कमलासन लखि कीन्ह बिचारा।
और न कोउ अहै संसारा॥Kamalasan lakhi keenh bichara. Aur na kou ahai sansara.
Looking at your lotus seat, you thought there was no one else in the world.
कमल के आसन को देखकर आपने सोचा कि संसार में और कोई नहीं है।

तब तुम कमलनाल गहि लीन्हा।
अन्त बिलोकन कर प्रण कीन्हा॥Tab tum kamalnaal gahi leenha. Ant bilokan kar pran keenha.
Then you took hold of the lotus stalk and vowed to find where it ended.
तब आपने कमल की नाल पकड़ ली और उसका अंत देखने का प्रण किया।

कोटिक वर्ष गये यहि भांती।
भ्रमत भ्रमत बीते दिन राती॥Kotik varsh gaye yahi bhanti. Bhramat bhramat beete din raati.
Millions of years passed this way, days and nights spent wandering on and on.
इसी तरह करोड़ों वर्ष बीत गए; भटकते-भटकते दिन और रात गुज़रते रहे।

पै तुम ताकर अन्त न पाये।
ह्वै निराश अतिशय दुःखियाये॥Pai tum takar ant na paye. Hvai nirash atishay dukhiyaye.
But you could not find its end, and grew disheartened and deeply troubled.
पर आप उसका अंत नहीं पा सके और निराश होकर बहुत दुखी हुए।

पुनि बिचार मन महँ यह कीन्हा।
महापद्म यह अति प्राचीना॥Puni bichar man mahan yah keenha. Mahapadma yah ati prachina.
Then you thought to yourself: this great lotus is very ancient.
फिर आपने मन में यह विचार किया कि यह महाकमल अत्यंत प्राचीन है।

याको जन्म भयो को कारन।
तबहीं मोहि करयो यह धारन॥Yako janm bhayo ko karan. Tabahin mohi karayo yah dharan.
“Why did it come into being? It must be so that it could bear me.”
“इसका जन्म किस कारण हुआ? इसीलिए तो इसने मुझे धारण किया है।”

अखिल भुवन महँ कहँ कोइ नाहीं।
सब कुछ अहै निहित मो माहीं॥Akhil bhuvan mahan kahan koi nahin. Sab kuchh ahai nihit mo mahin.
“There is no one else anywhere in all the worlds; everything is contained within me.”
“सारे लोकों में कहीं कोई नहीं है; सब कुछ मुझमें ही समाया है।”

यह निश्चय करि गरब बढ़ायो।
निज कहँ ब्रह्म मानि सुखपाये॥Yah nishchay kari garab badhayo. Nij kahan Brahm mani sukh paye.
Convinced of this, your pride grew, and you were pleased to think yourself the Supreme.
यह निश्चय करके आपका गर्व बढ़ गया और स्वयं को ब्रह्म मानकर आप प्रसन्न हुए।

गगन गिरा तब भई गंभीरा।
ब्रह्मा वचन सुनहु धरि धीरा॥Gagan gira tab bhai gambhira. Brahma vachan sunahu dhari dhira.
Then a deep voice spoke from the sky: “Brahma, listen calmly to these words.”
तब आकाश से गंभीर वाणी हुई: “ब्रह्मा, धैर्य रखकर ये वचन सुनो।”

सकल सृष्टि कर स्वामी जोई।
ब्रह्म अनादि अलख है सोई॥Sakal srishti kar swami joi. Brahm anadi alakh hai soi.
“The lord of all creation is the Supreme Brahman, without beginning and beyond sight.”
“जो सारी सृष्टि का स्वामी है, वही अनादि और अलख ब्रह्म है।”

निज इच्छा इन सब निरमाये।
ब्रह्मा विष्णु महेश बनाये॥Nij ichchha in sab nirmaye. Brahma Vishnu Mahesh banaye.
“By its own will it made all this, and created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.”
“उसी ने अपनी इच्छा से यह सब रचा और ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश को बनाया।”

सृष्टि लागि प्रगटे त्रयदेवा।
सब जग इनकी करिहै सेवा॥Srishti lagi pragte trayadeva. Sab jag inki karihai seva.
“The three gods appeared for the sake of creation, and the whole world will serve them.”
“सृष्टि के लिए ये तीनों देव प्रकट हुए, और सारा जगत इनकी सेवा करेगा।”

महापद्म जो तुम्हरो आसन।
ता पै अहै विष्णु को शासन॥Mahapadma jo tumharo aasan. Ta pai ahai Vishnu ko shasan.
“The great lotus that is your seat is under Vishnu’s rule.”
“यह महाकमल जो तुम्हारा आसन है, उस पर विष्णु का अधिकार है।”

विष्णु नाभितें प्रगट्यो आई।
तुम कहँ सत्य दीन्ह समुझाई॥Vishnu nabhite pragatyo aai. Tum kahan satya deenh samujhai.
“It sprang from Vishnu’s navel.” So the voice explained the truth to you.
“यह विष्णु की नाभि से प्रकट हुआ है।” इस तरह वाणी ने आपको सत्य समझाया।

भेटहु जाइ विष्णु हितमानी।
यह कहि बन्द भई नभवानी॥Bhetahu jai Vishnu hitmani. Yah kahi band bhai nabhvani.
“Go and meet Vishnu, for your own good.” Saying this, the voice from the sky fell silent.
“अपना हित समझकर जाकर विष्णु से मिलो।” यह कहकर आकाशवाणी बंद हो गई।

ताहि श्रवण कहि अचरज माना।
पुनि चतुरानन कीन्ह पयाना॥Tahi shravan kahi acharaj mana. Puni Chaturanan keenh payana.
Hearing this, the four-faced Brahma was amazed, and then he set out.
यह सुनकर चतुरानन ब्रह्मा चकित हुए और फिर चल पड़े।

कमल नाल धरि नीचे आवा।
तहां विष्णु के दर्शन पावा॥Kamal naal dhari neeche aava. Tahan Vishnu ke darshan pava.
Holding the lotus stalk he came down, and there he saw Vishnu.
कमल की नाल पकड़कर वे नीचे आए और वहाँ उन्हें विष्णु के दर्शन हुए।

शयन करत देखे सुरभूपा।
श्यामवर्ण तनु परम अनूपा॥Shayan karat dekhe surbhoopa. Shyamvarn tanu param anoopa.
He saw the king of the gods lying asleep, his dark body beyond compare.
उन्होंने देवताओं के राजा विष्णु को शयन करते देखा, जिनका साँवला शरीर अत्यंत अनुपम था।

सोहत चतुर्भुजा अतिसुन्दर।
क्रीटमुकट राजत मस्तक पर॥Sohat chaturbhuja atisundar. Kreet mukut rajat mastak par.
His four lovely arms shone, and a jewelled crown graced his head.
उनकी चार सुंदर भुजाएँ शोभित थीं और सिर पर किरीट-मुकुट विराज रहा था।

गल बैजन्ती माल बिराजै।
कोटि सूर्य की शोभा लाजै॥Gal Baijanti mal biraje. Koti surya ki shobha laje.
The Vaijayanti garland hung at his neck, a radiance that put millions of suns to shame.
गले में वैजयंती माला शोभित थी, जिसके आगे करोड़ों सूर्यों की शोभा भी लजा जाए।

शंख चक्र अरु गदा मनोहर।
पद्म सहित आयुध सब सुन्दर॥Shankh chakra aru gada manohar. Padma sahit aayudh sab sundar.
He held the conch, the discus, the lovely mace and the lotus, all his emblems beautiful.
शंख, चक्र, मनोहर गदा और कमल, उनके सभी आयुध सुंदर थे।

पायँ पलोटति रमा निरन्तर।
शेष नाग शय्या अति मनहर॥Paayan palotati Rama nirantar. Shesh naag shayya ati manhar.
Lakshmi was constantly pressing his feet, and his bed was the lovely serpent Shesha.
लक्ष्मी जी निरंतर उनके पैर दबा रही थीं और शेषनाग की शय्या अत्यंत मनोहर थी।

दिव्यरूप लखि कीन्ह प्रणामू।
हर्षित भे श्रीपति सुख धामू॥Divyaroop lakhi keenh pranamu. Harshit bhe Shripati sukh dhamu.
Seeing that divine form, Brahma bowed, and Vishnu, Lakshmi’s lord and the home of joy, was pleased.
उस दिव्य रूप को देखकर ब्रह्मा ने प्रणाम किया, और सुख के धाम लक्ष्मीपति प्रसन्न हुए।

बहु विधि विनय कीन्ह चतुरानन।
तब लक्ष्मी पति कहेउ मुदित मन॥Bahu vidhi vinay keenh Chaturanan. Tab Lakshmi pati kaheu mudit man.
The four-faced one prayed in many ways, and then Lakshmi’s lord spoke with a glad heart.
चतुरानन ने अनेक प्रकार से विनती की, तब लक्ष्मीपति ने प्रसन्न मन से कहा।

ब्रह्मा दूरि करहु अभिमाना।
ब्रह्मरूप हम दोउ समाना॥Brahma doori karahu abhimana. Brahmaroop ham dou samana.
“Brahma, give up your pride. We two are equally forms of the Supreme.”
“ब्रह्मा, अभिमान दूर करो। हम दोनों समान रूप से ब्रह्म के ही रूप हैं।”

तीजे श्री शिवशंकर आहीं।
ब्रह्मरूप सब त्रिभुवन मांही॥Teeje Shri Shivshankar aahin. Brahmaroop sab tribhuvan mahin.
“The third is Shiva Shankar. Everything in the three worlds is a form of the Supreme.”
“तीसरे श्री शिवशंकर हैं। तीनों लोकों में सब कुछ ब्रह्म का ही रूप है।”

तुम सों होइ सृष्टि विस्तारा।
हम पालन करिहैं संसारा॥Tum son hoi srishti vistara. Ham palan karihain sansara.
“Through you creation will unfold, and I will sustain the world.”
“तुमसे सृष्टि का विस्तार होगा और मैं संसार का पालन करूँगा।”

शिव संहार करहिं सब केरा।
हम तीनहुं कहँ काज धनेरा॥Shiv sanhar karahin sab kera. Ham teenahun kahan kaj dhanera.
“Shiva will bring about the dissolution of all. Each of us three has great work to do.”
“शिव सबका संहार करेंगे। हम तीनों के पास बहुत काम है।”

अगुणरूप श्री ब्रह्म बखानहु।
निराकार तिनकहँ तुम जानहु॥Agunroop Shri Brahm bakhanahu. Nirakar tinkahan tum janahu.
“Speak of the Supreme as beyond all qualities, and know it to be formless.”
“श्री ब्रह्म को गुणों से परे बताओ और उन्हें निराकार जानो।”

हम साकार रूप त्रयदेवा।
करिहैं सदा ब्रह्म की सेवा॥Ham sakar roop trayadeva. Karihain sada Brahm ki seva.
“We three gods are its forms with shape, and we will always serve the Supreme.”
“हम तीनों देव उसके साकार रूप हैं और सदा ब्रह्म की सेवा करेंगे।”

यह सुनि ब्रह्मा परम सिहाये।
परब्रह्म के यश अति गाये॥Yah suni Brahma param sihaye. Parabrahm ke yash ati gaye.
Hearing this, Brahma was overjoyed and sang the glory of the Supreme at length.
यह सुनकर ब्रह्मा बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और परब्रह्म का खूब यश गाया।

सो सब विदित वेद के नामा।
मुक्ति रूप सो परम ललामा॥So sab vidit Ved ke nama. Mukti roop so param lalama.
All that praise became known as the Vedas, which are liberation itself and supremely beautiful.
वह सारी स्तुति वेद के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुई, जो मुक्ति-रूप और परम सुंदर है।

यहि विधि प्रभु भो जनम तुम्हारा।
पुनि तुम प्रगट कीन्ह संसारा॥Yahi vidhi prabhu bho janam tumhara. Puni tum pragat keenh sansara.
This, Lord, is how you were born, and then you brought the world into being.
हे प्रभु, इस तरह आपका जन्म हुआ और फिर आपने संसार को प्रकट किया।

नाम पितामह सुन्दर पायेउ।
जड़ चेतन सब कहँ निरमायेउ॥Naam Pitamah sundar payeu. Jad chetan sab kahan nirmayeu.
You received the lovely name Pitamaha, the grandfather, and made everything, living and non-living.
आपने पितामह का सुंदर नाम पाया और जड़-चेतन सबकी रचना की।

लीन्ह अनेक बार अवतारा।
सुन्दर सुयश जगत विस्तारा॥Leenh anek bar avatara. Sundar suyash jagat vistara.
You took birth many times, spreading your fine fame across the world.
आपने अनेक बार अवतार लिया और जगत में अपना सुंदर यश फैलाया।

देवदनुज सब तुम कहँ ध्यावहिं।
मनवांछित तुम सन सब पावहिं॥Dev danuj sab tum kahan dhyavahin. Manvanchhit tum san sab pavahin.
Gods and demons alike meditate on you, and all receive from you what their hearts desire.
देवता और दानव सब आपका ध्यान करते हैं और आपसे मनचाहा फल पाते हैं।

जो कोउ ध्यान धरै नर नारी।
ताकी आस पुजावहु सारी॥Jo kou dhyan dharai nar nari. Taki aas pujavahu sari.
Whoever meditates on you, man or woman, you fulfil all their hopes.
जो भी स्त्री या पुरुष आपका ध्यान करता है, आप उसकी सारी आशाएँ पूरी करते हैं।

पुष्कर तीर्थ परम सुखदाई।
तहँ तुम बसहु सदा सुरराई॥Pushkar teerth param sukhdai. Tahan tum basahu sada surrai.
The holy place of Pushkar gives the greatest joy; there you always dwell, king of the gods.
पुष्कर तीर्थ परम सुख देने वाला है; हे देवराज, आप वहाँ सदा निवास करते हैं।

कुण्ड नहाइ करहि जो पूजन।
ता कर दूर होइ सब दूषण॥Kund nahai karahi jo poojan. Ta kar door hoi sab dooshan.
Whoever bathes in its sacred lake and worships you is freed of every fault.
जो वहाँ के कुंड में स्नान करके पूजा करता है, उसके सारे दोष दूर हो जाते हैं।
