Durga Saptashati 10: Shumbha Vadh
दुर्गा सप्तशती · दशम अध्याय

ॐ उत्तप्तहेमरुचिरां रविचन्द्रवह्निनेत्रां धनुश्शरयुताङ्कुशपाशशूलम्।
रम्यैर्भुजैश्च दधतीं शिवशक्तिरूपां कामेश्वरीं हृदि भजामि धृतेन्दुलेखाम्॥Om uttaptahemaruchiram ravichandravahninetram dhanushsharayutankushapashashulam, ramyairbhujaishcha dadhatim shivashaktirupam kameshvarim hridi bhajami dhritendulekham.
Om. In my heart I worship Kameshvari, the power of Shiva, bright as molten gold, whose three eyes are the sun, moon and fire, who wears the crescent moon and holds bow and arrows, goad, noose and trident in her lovely hands.
ॐ। मैं हृदय में उन कामेश्वरी का भजन करता हूँ जो तपे सोने जैसी सुंदर हैं, जिनके तीन नेत्र सूर्य, चंद्र और अग्नि हैं, जो अपने सुंदर हाथों में धनुष-बाण, अंकुश, पाश और त्रिशूल धारण करती हैं, जो शिव की शक्ति हैं और चंद्रकला धारण करती हैं।

ऋषिरुवाच॥
Rishiruvacha.
The sage said:
ऋषि ने कहा:
-
निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम्।
हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः॥Nishumbham nihatam drishtva bhrataram pranasammitam, hanyamanam balam chaiva shumbhah kruddhobravidvachah.
Seeing his brother Nishumbha, dear to him as life, slain, and his army being destroyed, Shumbha spoke in anger.
अपने प्राणों जैसे प्रिय भाई निशुंभ को मरा हुआ और अपनी सेना को नष्ट होते देखकर शुंभ ने क्रोध से कहा।

बलावलेपाद्दुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह।
अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युद्ध्यसे यातिमानिनी॥Balavalepaddushte tvam ma durge garvamavaha, anyasam balamashritya yuddhyase yatimanini.
“Wicked Durga, don’t be proud of your strength. You are so arrogant, yet you fight by relying on the strength of others.”
“अरी दुष्ट दुर्गा, अपने बल का घमंड मत कर। तू बड़ी अभिमानी है, पर दूसरों के बल के सहारे लड़ रही है।”

देव्युवाच॥
Devyuvacha.
The Goddess said:
देवी ने कहा:
-
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा।
पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः॥Ekaivaham jagatyatra dvitiya ka mamapara, pashyaita dushta mayyeva vishantyo madvibhutayah.
“I alone exist in this world; who else is there besides me? Look, wicked one, these are my own powers, entering back into me.”
“इस संसार में मैं अकेली ही हूँ; मेरे सिवा दूसरी कौन है? देख दुष्ट, ये मेरी ही शक्तियाँ मुझमें ही समा रही हैं।”

ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम्।
तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकैवासीत्तदाम्बिका॥Tatah samastasta devyo brahmanipramukha layam, tasya devyastanau jagmurekaivasittadambika.
Then all those goddesses, led by Brahmani, merged into the body of the Goddess, and Ambika alone remained.
तब ब्रह्माणी आदि वे सभी देवियाँ उस देवी के शरीर में लीन हो गईं, और अकेली अंबिका ही रह गईं।

देव्युवाच॥
Devyuvacha.
The Goddess said:
देवी ने कहा:
-
अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता।
तत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव॥Aham vibhutya bahubhiriha rupairyadasthita, tatsamhritam mayaikaiva tishthamyajau sthiro bhava.
“The many forms I took here through my power I have now withdrawn. I stand alone in battle. Stand firm.”
“अपनी शक्ति से मैंने यहाँ जो अनेक रूप धारण किए थे, उन्हें मैंने समेट लिया है। अब मैं अकेली युद्ध में खड़ी हूँ। तू भी डटकर खड़ा रह।”

ऋषिरुवाच॥
Rishiruvacha.
The sage said:
ऋषि ने कहा:
-
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः।
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम्॥Tatah pravavrite yuddham devyah shumbhasya chobhayoh, pashyatam sarvadevanamasuranam cha darunam.
Then a dreadful battle began between the Goddess and Shumbha, as all the gods and demons looked on.
फिर सब देवताओं और असुरों के देखते-देखते देवी और शुंभ के बीच भयंकर युद्ध छिड़ गया।

शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथास्त्रैश्चैव दारुणैः।
तयोर्युद्धमभूद्भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम्॥Sharavarshaih shitaih shastraistathastraishchaiva darunaih, tayoryuddhamabhudbhuyah sarvalokabhayankaram.
With showers of arrows, sharp weapons and dreadful missiles, the two fought on, a battle that terrified all the worlds.
बाणों की वर्षा, तीखे शस्त्रों और भयानक अस्त्रों से दोनों में फिर ऐसा युद्ध हुआ जिससे सारे लोक डर गए।

दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका।
बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः॥Divyanyastrani shatasho mumuche yanyathambika, babhanja tani daityendrastatpratighatakartribhih.
The hundreds of divine missiles that Ambika released, the demon king broke with weapons that countered them.
अंबिका ने जो सैकड़ों दिव्य अस्त्र छोड़े, दैत्यराज ने उन्हें काटने वाले अस्त्रों से तोड़ दिया।

मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी।
बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः॥Muktani tena chastrani divyani parameshvari, babhanja lilayaivograhunkarochcharanadibhih.
And the divine missiles he released, the supreme Goddess broke with ease, by a fierce cry of “hum” and the like.
और उसने जो दिव्य अस्त्र छोड़े, परमेश्वरी ने उन्हें खेल-खेल में भयंकर ‘हुं’कार आदि से ही नष्ट कर दिया।

ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सोऽसुरः।
सापि तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः॥Tatah sharashatairdevimachchhadayata sosurah, sapi tatkupita devi dhanushchichchheda cheshubhih.
Then the demon covered the Goddess with hundreds of arrows; angered, she cut his bow apart with her arrows.
तब उस असुर ने सैकड़ों बाणों से देवी को ढक दिया; इससे क्रोधित होकर देवी ने अपने बाणों से उसका धनुष काट डाला।

छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे।
चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम्॥Chhinne dhanushi daityendrastatha shaktimathadade, chichchheda devi chakrena tamapyasya kare sthitam.
His bow cut, the demon king took up a spear; the Goddess cut that too with her discus while it was still in his hand.
धनुष कट जाने पर दैत्यराज ने भाला उठाया; देवी ने चक्र से उसके हाथ में रहते ही उसे भी काट दिया।

ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत्।
अभ्यधावत्तदा देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः॥Tatah khadgamupadaya shatachandram cha bhanumat, abhyadhavattada devim daityanamadhipeshvarah.
Then the lord of the demons seized a gleaming sword and a shield marked with a hundred moons, and rushed at the Goddess.
फिर दैत्यों के स्वामी ने चमकती तलवार और सौ चंद्रमाओं से सजी ढाल लेकर देवी पर धावा बोला।

तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम्॥Tasyapatata evashu khadgam chichchheda chandika, dhanurmuktaih shitairbanaishcharma charkakaramalam.
As he charged, Chandika swiftly cut his sword with sharp arrows from her bow, and his shield, bright as the sun’s rays.
उसके झपटते ही चंडिका ने धनुष से छोड़े तीखे बाणों से उसकी तलवार और सूर्य की किरणों जैसी चमकती ढाल को भी काट दिया।

हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधन्वा विसारथिः।
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः॥Hatashvah sa tada daityashchhinnadhanva visarathih, jagraha mudgaram ghoramambikanidhanodyatah.
His horses killed, his bow broken, his charioteer gone, the demon seized a dreadful club, intent on killing Ambika.
घोड़े मारे गए, धनुष टूट गया, सारथी न रहा, तब वह दैत्य अंबिका को मारने के लिए भयानक मुगदर लेकर आया।

चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः।
तथापि सोऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान्॥Chichchhedapatatastasya mudgaram nishitaih sharaih, tathapi sobhyadhavattam mushtimudyamya vegavan.
As he came at her, she cut his club with sharp arrows. Still he rushed at her swiftly with his fist raised.
उसके आते ही देवी ने तीखे बाणों से उसका मुगदर काट डाला। फिर भी वह मुट्ठी तानकर तेज़ी से उनकी ओर दौड़ा।

स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः।
देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत्॥Sa mushtim patayamasa hridaye daityapungavah, devyastam chapi sa devi talenorasyatadayat.
That bull among demons struck the Goddess on the heart with his fist, and the Goddess struck him on the chest with her palm.
उस श्रेष्ठ दैत्य ने देवी के हृदय पर मुक्का मारा, और देवी ने भी उसकी छाती पर थप्पड़ मारा।

तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले।
स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः॥Talapraharabhihato nipapata mahitale, sa daityarajah sahasa punareva tathotthitah.
Struck by the blow of her palm, the demon king fell to the ground, but at once he rose again.
थप्पड़ की चोट से दैत्यराज धरती पर गिर पड़ा, पर तुरंत ही फिर उठ खड़ा हुआ।

उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः।
तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका॥Utpatya cha pragrihyochchairdevim gaganamasthitah, tatrapi sa niradhara yuyudhe tena chandika.
Leaping up, he seized the Goddess and rose high into the sky. There too, with no support beneath her, Chandika fought him.
उछलकर उसने देवी को पकड़ा और ऊँचे आकाश में जा पहुँचा। वहाँ भी बिना किसी आधार के चंडिका उससे लड़ती रहीं।

नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम्।
चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम्॥Niyuddham khe tada daityashchandika cha parasparam, chakratuh prathamam siddhamunivismayakarakam.
Then the demon and Chandika wrestled each other in the sky, a fight never seen before, which amazed the siddhas and sages.
तब दैत्य और चंडिका ने आकाश में आपस में ऐसा मल्लयुद्ध किया जो पहले कभी नहीं हुआ था, जिसे देखकर सिद्ध और मुनि चकित हो गए।

ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह।
उत्पात्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले॥Tato niyuddham suchiram kritva tenambika saha, utpatya bhramayamasa chikshepa dharanitale.
After wrestling with him for a long time, Ambika lifted him up, whirled him around and hurled him to the ground.
बहुत देर तक उससे मल्लयुद्ध करने के बाद अंबिका ने उसे उठाकर घुमाया और धरती पर पटक दिया।

स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः।
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया॥Sa kshipto dharanim prapya mushtimudyamya vegitah, abhyadhavata dushtatma chandikanidhanechchhaya.
Thrown down, the wicked one reached the ground, raised his fist and rushed forward again, wanting to kill Chandika.
पटके जाने पर वह दुष्ट धरती पर आकर फिर मुट्ठी तानकर चंडिका को मारने की इच्छा से तेज़ी से दौड़ा।

तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम्।
जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि॥Tamayantam tato devi sarvadaityajaneshvaram, jagatyam patayamasa bhittva shulena vakshasi.
As the lord of all the demons came at her, the Goddess pierced his chest with her trident and threw him to the earth.
सब दैत्यों के उस स्वामी को आते देख देवी ने त्रिशूल से उसकी छाती भेदकर उसे धरती पर गिरा दिया।

स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः।
चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम्॥Sa gatasuh papatorvyam devishulagravikshatah, chalayan sakalam prithvim sabdhidvipam saparvatam.
Wounded by the point of the Goddess’s trident, he fell lifeless to the ground, shaking the whole earth with its oceans, islands and mountains.
देवी के त्रिशूल की नोक से घायल होकर वह प्राणहीन होकर धरती पर गिरा, जिससे समुद्रों, द्वीपों और पर्वतों सहित सारी पृथ्वी हिल उठी।

ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि।
जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः॥Tatah prasannamakhilam hate tasmin duratmani, jagatsvasthyamativapa nirmalam chabhavannabhah.
When that evil one was slain, the whole world became calm and well again, and the sky grew clear.
उस दुष्ट के मारे जाने पर सारा जगत प्रसन्न और स्वस्थ हो गया, और आकाश निर्मल हो गया।

उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः।
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते॥Utpatameghah solka ye pragasamste shamam yayuh, sarito margavahinyastathasamstatra patite.
The ominous clouds and meteors that had appeared before died away, and when he fell, the rivers flowed in their proper courses again.
पहले जो अपशकुन वाले बादल और उल्काएँ दिख रहे थे, वे शांत हो गए, और उसके गिरते ही नदियाँ फिर अपने मार्ग में बहने लगीं।

ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः।
बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः॥Tato devaganah sarve harshanirbharamanasah, babhuvurnihate tasmin gandharva lalitam jaguh.
When he was slain, all the gods were filled with joy, and the Gandharvas sang sweetly.
उसके मारे जाने पर सब देवताओं के मन आनंद से भर गए और गंधर्व मधुर गान करने लगे।

अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः।
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः॥Avadayamstathaivanye nanritushchapsaroganah, vavuh punyastatha vatah suprabhobhuddivakarah.
Others played instruments, the Apsaras danced, holy breezes blew and the sun shone brightly.
दूसरे बाजे बजाने लगे, अप्सराएँ नाचने लगीं, पवित्र हवाएँ बहने लगीं और सूर्य सुंदर प्रकाश से चमकने लगा।

जज्वलुश्चाग्नयः शान्ताः शान्ता दिग्जनितस्वनाः॥
Jajvalushchagnayah shantah shanta digjanitasvanah.
The sacred fires, which had died down, blazed again, and the fearful noises in the directions fell silent.
बुझी हुई यज्ञ-अग्नियाँ फिर जल उठीं, और दिशाओं में उठने वाले भयानक शब्द शांत हो गए।

इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये शुम्भवधो नाम दशमोऽध्यायः॥
Iti shrimarkandeyapurane savarnike manvantare devimahatmye shumbhavadho nama dashamodhyayah.
Thus ends the tenth chapter of the Devi Mahatmya, in the Markandeya Purana, called the slaying of Shumbha.
इस प्रकार मार्कण्डेय पुराण के देवी माहात्म्य का ‘शुंभ वध’ नामक दसवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ।
