Om kalabhrabham katakshairarikulabhayadam maulibaddhendurekham shankham chakram kripanam trishikhamapi karairudvahantim trinetram, simhaskandhadhirudham tribhuvanamakhilam tejasa purayantim dhyayed durgam jayakhyam tridashaparivritam sevitam siddhikamaih.

Om. Meditate on Durga called Jaya: dark as a storm cloud, her glance striking fear into her enemies, the crescent moon bound in her hair, holding conch, discus, sword and trident in her hands, three-eyed, riding on a lion’s shoulders, filling the three worlds with her radiance, surrounded by the gods and served by those who seek perfection.

    Om rishiruvacha.

    Om. The sage said:

Shakradayah suragana nihatetivirye tasminduratmani suraribale cha devya, tam tushtuvuh pranatinamrashirodharamsa vagbhih praharshapulakodgamacharudehah.

When the mighty, wicked demon and his army had been slain by the Goddess, Indra and the hosts of gods praised her, their heads and shoulders bowed low, their bodies thrilling with joy.

Devya yaya tatamidam jagadatmashaktya nishsheshadevaganashaktisamuhamurtya, tamambikamakhiladevamaharshipujyam bhaktya natah sma vidadhatu shubhani sa nah.

We bow in devotion to Ambika, worshipped by all gods and great sages, who pervades this world with her own power and whose form is the gathered might of all the gods. May she bring us good fortune.

Yasyah prabhavamatulam bhagavanananto brahma harashcha na hi vaktumalam balam cha, sa chandikakhilajagatparipalanaya nashaya chashubhabhayasya matim karotu.

Whose matchless glory and strength not even Lord Ananta, Brahma or Shiva can describe: may that Chandika set her mind on protecting the whole world and destroying the fear of evil.

Ya shrih svayam sukritinam bhavaneshvalakshmih papatmanam kritadhiyam hridayeshu buddhih, shraddha satam kulajanaprabhavasya lajja tam tvam natah sma paripalaya devi vishvam.

You are fortune itself in the homes of the virtuous and misfortune in the homes of the wicked, wisdom in the hearts of the thoughtful, faith in the good, and modesty in the well-born. We bow to you, O Goddess: protect the universe.

Kim varnayama tava rupamachintyametat kim chativiryamasurakshayakari bhuri, kim chahaveshu charitani tavadbhutani sarveshu devyasuradevaganadikeshu.

How can we describe your form, beyond all thought, or your great might that destroys the demons, or the wondrous deeds you did in battle among gods, demons and all?

Hetuh samastajagatam trigunapi doshairna jnayase hariharadibhirapyapara, sarvashrayakhilamidam jagadamshabhutamavyakrita hi parama prakritistvamadya.

You are the cause of all the worlds; though made of the three qualities, you are untouched by their flaws. Even Vishnu and Shiva cannot know your limits. You are the refuge of all; this whole world is a part of you, for you are the first, supreme, unmanifest Nature.

Yasyah samastasurata samudiranena triptim prayati sakaleshu makheshu devi, svahasi vai pitriganasya cha triptiheturuchcharyase tvamata eva janaih svadha cha.

O Goddess, you are Svaha, by whose utterance all the gods are satisfied in every sacrifice; and you are Svadha, which people chant to satisfy the ancestors.

Ya muktiheturavichintyamahavrata tvamabhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasaraih, moksharthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoshairvidyasi sa bhagavati parama hi devi.

O Goddess, you are the cause of liberation, the great discipline beyond thought, practised by sages who seek freedom, who have mastered their senses and cast off every fault. You are that supreme, blessed knowledge.

Shabdatmika suvimalargyajusham nidhanamudgitharamyapadapathavatam cha samnam, devi trayi bhagavati bhavabhavanaya varta cha sarvajagatam paramartihantri.

You are the essence of sacred sound, the treasury of the pure Rig and Yajur Vedas and of the Sama with its lovely chants. You are the three Vedas, the Blessed One, the livelihood that sustains the world, and the one who ends its deepest pain.

Medhasi devi viditakhilashastrasara durgasi durgabhavasagaranaurasanga, shrih kaitabharihridayaikakritadhivasa gauri tvameva shashimaulikritapratishtha.

O Goddess, you are Medha, the wisdom that knows the essence of all scriptures; you are Durga, the boat that carries us across the hard ocean of worldly life, unattached; you are Shri, who dwells in the heart of Vishnu, and Gauri, at home with the moon-crowned Shiva.

Ishatsahasamamalam paripurnachandrabimbanukari kanakottamakantikantam, atyadbhutam prahritamattarusha tathapi vaktram vilokya sahasa mahishasurena.

Your face, gently smiling, spotless like the full moon and lovely as the finest gold, was a wonder; yet when Mahishasura saw it, he struck at it in sudden rage.

Drishtva tu devi kupitam bhrukutikaralamudyachchhashankasadrishachchhavi yanna sadyah, prananmumocha mahishastadativa chitram kairjivyate hi kupitantakadarshanena.

And it is a great wonder, O Goddess, that seeing your face angry, fearsome with frowning brows and red as the rising moon, Mahisha did not give up his life at once. For who can live after seeing Death himself enraged?

Devi prasida parama bhavati bhavaya sadyo vinashayasi kopavati kulani, vijnatametadadhunaiva yadastametannitam balam suvipulam mahishasurasya.

O Goddess, be gracious. When you are pleased you bring well-being; when angry you swiftly destroy whole clans. We have seen this just now, for the vast army of Mahishasura has been wiped out.

Te sammata janapadeshu dhanani tesham tesham yashamsi na cha sidati dharmavargah, dhanyasta eva nibhritatmajabhrityadara yesham sadabhyudayada bhavati prasanna.

Those on whom you, the giver of prosperity, are pleased are honoured in their lands; theirs is wealth and fame, their righteousness never fails, and they are blessed with loyal children, servants and spouses.

Dharmyani devi sakalani sadaiva karmanyatyadritah pratidinam sukriti karoti, svargam prayati cha tato bhavatiprasadallokatrayepi phalada nanu devi tena.

By your grace, O Goddess, the virtuous person performs every righteous deed with care each day and so reaches heaven. Truly, you give rewards in all three worlds.

Durge smrita harasi bhitimasheshajantoh svasthaih smrita matimativa shubham dadasi, daridryaduhkhabhayaharini ka tvadanya sarvopakarakaranaya sadardrachitta.

O Durga, when remembered you take away the fear of every being; remembered by those at ease, you give a mind full of goodness. Remover of poverty, pain and fear, who but you is so tender-hearted, always ready to help all?

Ebhirhatairjagadupaiti sukham tathaite kurvantu nama narakaya chiraya papam, sangramamrityumadhigamya divam prayantu matveti nunamahitan vinihamsi devi.

Surely you slay the enemies thinking: let the world be at peace once they are gone, and though they have sinned enough to stay long in hell, let them die in battle and reach heaven.

Drishtvaiva kim na bhavati prakaroti bhasma sarvasuranarishu yatprahinoshi shastram, lokan prayantu ripavopi hi shastraputa ittham matirbhavati teshvapi tetisadhvi.

Could you not turn all the demons to ash with a single glance? Yet you strike them with weapons so that even your enemies, purified by them, may reach the higher worlds. Such is your kindness even toward them.

Khadgaprabhanikaravisphuranaistathograih shulagrakantinivahena drishosuranam, yannagata vilayamamshumadindukhandayogyananam tava vilokayatam tadetat.

That the demons’ eyes were not blinded by the fierce flashing of your sword and the dazzle of your trident’s tip is because they were gazing at your face, gentle as the radiant crescent moon.

Durvrittavrittashamanam tava devi shilam rupam tathaitadavichintyamatulyamanyaih, viryam cha hantrihritadevaparakramanam vairishvapi prakatitaiva daya tvayettham.

O Goddess, your nature is to subdue the wicked; your form is beyond thought and beyond compare; your might destroys those who robbed the gods of their strength. In this way you have shown mercy even to your enemies.

Kenopama bhavatu tesya parakramasya rupam cha shatrubhayakaryatihari kutra, chitte kripa samaranishthurata cha drishta tvayyeva devi varade bhuvanatrayepi.

What can compare with your valour? Where else is a form so lovely yet so fearsome to enemies? Kindness in the heart and sternness in battle, O giver of boons, are seen together in you alone in all three worlds.

Trailokyametadakhilam ripunashanena tratam tvaya samaramurdhani tepi hatva, nita divam ripugana bhayamapyapastamasmakamunmadasuraribhavam namaste.

By destroying the enemies you have saved all three worlds; slaying them at the front of battle, you sent even them to heaven, and you have taken away our fear of the frenzied demons. Salutations to you.

Shulena pahi no devi pahi khadgena chambike, ghantasvanena nah pahi chapajyanihsvanena cha.

Protect us with your trident, O Goddess; protect us with your sword, O Ambika; protect us with the sound of your bell and the twang of your bowstring.

Prachyam raksha pratichyam cha chandike raksha dakshine, bhramanenatmashulasya uttarasyam tatheshvari.

Guard us in the east and the west, O Chandika; guard us in the south, and in the north as well, O Ishvari, by whirling your trident.

Saumyani yani rupani trailokye vicharanti te, yani chatyarthaghorani tai rakshasmamstatha bhuvam.

With your gentle forms that move through the three worlds, and with your most terrible forms, protect us and the earth.

Khadgashulagadadini yani chastrani tembike, karapallavasangini tairasman raksha sarvatah.

O Ambika, with the sword, trident, mace and all the weapons held in your tender hands, protect us on every side.

Evam stuta surairdivyaih kusumairnandanodbhavaih, archita jagatam dhatri tatha gandhanulepanaih.

Thus praised by the gods, the mother of the worlds was worshipped with heavenly flowers from the Nandana garden and with fragrant pastes.

Bhaktya samastaistridashairdivyairdhupaistu dhupita, praha prasadasumukhi samastan pranatan suran.

When all the gods had devotedly offered her heavenly incense, she, her face bright with grace, spoke to all the bowing gods.

    Devyuvacha.

    The Goddess said:

    Vriyatam tridashah sarve yadasmattobhivanchhitam.

O gods, ask of me whatever you all desire.

    Bhagavatya kritam sarvam na kinchidavashishyate.

The Blessed Goddess has done everything; nothing remains to be done.

Yadayam nihatah shatrurasmakam mahishasurah, yadi chapi varo deyastvayasmakam maheshvari.

Our enemy Mahishasura has been slain. Yet if you would still grant us a boon, O great Goddess,

Samsmrita samsmrita tvam no himsethah paramapadah, yashcha martyah stavairebhistvam stoshyatyamalanane.

then whenever we remember you, destroy our gravest troubles; and O pure-faced one, whatever mortal praises you with these hymns,

Tasya vittarddhivibhavairdhanadaradisampadam, vriddhayesmatprasanna tvam bhavethah sarvadambike.

may you, gracious to us, always increase his wealth, prosperity and glory, his riches, family and every blessing, O Ambika.

Iti prasadita devairjagatorthe tathatmanah, tathetyuktva bhadrakali babhuvantarhita nripa.

Thus pleased by the gods, for the sake of the world and of themselves, Bhadrakali said, So be it, and vanished, O king.

Ityetatkathitam bhupa sambhuta sa yatha pura, devi devasharirebhyo jagattrayahitaishini.

So I have told you, O king, how in ancient times the Goddess, who wishes well for the three worlds, arose from the bodies of the gods.

Punashcha gauridehatsa samudbhuta yathabhavat, vadhaya dushtadaityanam tatha shumbhanishumbhayoh.

And how she arose again from the body of Gauri to slay the wicked demons and Shumbha and Nishumbha,

Rakshanaya cha lokanam devanamupakarini, tachchhrinushva mayakhyatam yathavatkathayami te. Hrim om.

to protect the worlds and help the gods: hear that too as I tell it to you just as it happened. Hrim, Om.

Iti shrimarkandeyapurane savarnike manvantare devimahatmye shakradistutirnama chaturthodhyayah.

Thus ends the fourth chapter of the Devi Mahatmya, in the Markandeya Purana, in the Savarni Manvantara, called the hymn of Indra and the gods.
