1. ॐ घण्टाशूलहलानि शङ्खमुसले चक्रं धनुः सायकं हस्ताब्जैर्दधतीं घनान्तविलसच्छीतांशुतुल्यप्रभाम्।
   गौरीदेहसमुद्भवां त्रिजगतामाधारभूतां महापूर्वामत्र सरस्वतीमनुभजे शुम्भादिदैत्यार्दिनीम्॥

   Om ghantashulahalani shankhamusale chakram dhanuh sayakam hastabjairdadhatim ghanantavilasachchhitamshutulyaprabham, gauridehasamudbhavam trijagatamadharabhutam mahapurvamatra sarasvatimanubhaje shumbhadidaityardinim.

   I worship Mahasaraswati, who holds in her lotus hands the bell, trident, plough, conch, pestle, discus, bow and arrow; who shines like the autumn moon after the rains; who arose from Gauri’s body, supports the three worlds and destroys Shumbha and the other demons.

   जो अपने कमल जैसे हाथों में घंटा, त्रिशूल, हल, शंख, मूसल, चक्र, धनुष और बाण धारण करती हैं, जिनकी आभा वर्षा के बाद के शरद चंद्रमा जैसी है, जो गौरी के शरीर से प्रकट हुईं, तीनों लोकों का आधार हैं और शुम्भ आदि दैत्यों का नाश करती हैं, उन महासरस्वती का मैं भजन करता हूँ।

2. ॐ क्लीं ऋषिरुवाच॥

   Om klim rishiruvacha.

   Om klim, the seed syllable of the Goddess. The sage said:

   ॐ क्लीं, देवी का बीज मंत्र। ऋषि ने कहा:

3. पुरा शुम्भनिशुम्भाभ्यामसुराभ्यां शचीपतेः।
   त्रैलोक्यं यज्ञभागाश्च हृता मदबलाश्रयात्॥

   Pura shumbhanishumbhabhyamasurabhyam shachipateh, trailokyam yajnabhagashcha hrita madabalashrayat.

   Long ago the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, proud of their strength, seized the three worlds and the sacrificial offerings that belonged to Indra, husband of Shachi.

   बहुत पहले शुम्भ और निशुम्भ नाम के असुरों ने अपने बल के घमंड में शचीपति इन्द्र से तीनों लोक और यज्ञ के भाग छीन लिए।

4. तावेव सूर्यतां तद्वदधिकारं तथैन्दवम्।
   कौबेरमथ याम्यं च चक्राते वरुणस्य च॥

   Taveva suryatam tadvadadhikaram tathaindavam, kauberamatha yamyam cha chakrate varunasya cha.

   They also took over the roles of the sun and the moon, and of Kubera, Yama and Varuna.

   उन्होंने सूर्य और चंद्रमा के अधिकार, और कुबेर, यम तथा वरुण के अधिकार भी अपने हाथ में ले लिए।

5. तावेव पवनर्द्धिं च चक्रतुर्वह्निकर्म च।
   ततो देवा विनिर्धूता भ्रष्टराज्याः पराजिताः॥

   Taveva pavanarddhim cha chakraturvahnikarma cha, tato deva vinirdhuta bhrashtarajyah parajitah.

   They took the powers of the wind and the work of fire as well. The gods, defeated and stripped of their kingdoms, were driven out.

   उन्होंने वायु और अग्नि के काम भी अपने अधिकार में कर लिए। तब हारे हुए देवता अपने राज्य खोकर निकाल दिए गए।

6. हृताधिकारास्त्रिदशास्ताभ्यां सर्वे निराकृताः।
   महासुराभ्यां तां देवीं संस्मरन्त्यपराजिताम्॥

   Hritadhikarastridashastabhyam sarve nirakritah, mahasurabhyam tam devim samsmarantyaparajitam.

   Robbed of their powers and cast out by those two great demons, all the gods remembered the invincible Goddess.

   उन दोनों महादैत्यों द्वारा अधिकार छीने जाने और निकाल दिए जाने पर सब देवताओं ने अजेय देवी को याद किया।

7. तयास्माकं वरो दत्तो यथाऽऽपत्सु स्मृताखिलाः।
   भवतां नाशयिष्यामि तत्क्षणात्परमापदः॥

   Tayasmakam varo datto yathapatsu smritakhilah, bhavatam nashayishyami tatkshanatparamapadah.

   “She gave us a boon: ‘Whenever you remember me in trouble, I will at once destroy all your worst calamities.’”

   “उन्होंने हमें वर दिया था: ‘संकट में जब भी तुम मुझे याद करोगे, मैं उसी क्षण तुम्हारी सारी बड़ी विपत्तियाँ नष्ट कर दूँगी।’”

8. इति कृत्वा मतिं देवा हिमवन्तं नगेश्वरम्।
   जग्मुस्तत्र ततो देवीं विष्णुमायां प्रतुष्टुवुः॥

   Iti kritva matim deva himavantam nageshvaram, jagmustatra tato devim vishnumayam pratushtuvuh.

   With this in mind the gods went to the Himalaya, king of mountains, and there praised the Goddess Vishnumaya.

   यह सोचकर देवता पर्वतराज हिमालय पर गए और वहाँ विष्णुमाया देवी की स्तुति करने लगे।

9. देवा ऊचुः॥

   Deva uchuh.

   The gods said:

   देवताओं ने कहा:

10. नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः।
    नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम्॥

    Namo devyai mahadevyai shivayai satatam namah, namah prakrityai bhadrayai niyatah pranatah sma tam.

    Salutations to the Goddess, the great Goddess, to the auspicious one, always. Salutations to Prakriti, primal nature, the gracious one; with devotion we bow to her.

    देवी को, महादेवी को, कल्याणमयी शिवा को सदा नमस्कार। प्रकृति को, मंगलमयी भद्रा को नमस्कार; हम नियम से उन्हें प्रणाम करते हैं।

11. रौद्रायै नमो नित्यायै गौर्यै धात्र्यै नमो नमः।
    ज्योत्स्नायै चेन्दुरूपिण्यै सुखायै सततं नमः॥

    Raudrayai namo nityayai gauryai dhatryai namo namah, jyotsnayai chendurupinyai sukhayai satatam namah.

    Salutations to the fierce one, the eternal one, to Gauri, the sustainer. Salutations always to her who is moonlight, who has the form of the moon, who is joy itself.

    रौद्र रूप वाली, नित्य, गौरी और सबको धारण करने वाली देवी को बार-बार नमस्कार। चाँदनी रूप, चंद्रमा रूप और सुख रूप देवी को सदा नमस्कार।

12. कल्याण्यै प्रणतां वृद्ध्यै सिद्ध्यै कुर्मो नमो नमः।
    नैर्ऋत्यै भूभृतां लक्ष्म्यै शर्वाण्यै ते नमो नमः॥

    Kalyanyai pranatam vriddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namah, nairrityai bhubhritam lakshmyai sharvanyai te namo namah.

    Again and again we bow to the auspicious one, who is growth and success for those who bow to her. Salutations to you, the dark power of destruction, the fortune of kings, Sharvani, wife of Shiva.

    शरण में आए लोगों के लिए वृद्धि और सिद्धि रूप कल्याणी को हम बार-बार नमस्कार करते हैं। नैर्ऋती, राजाओं की लक्ष्मी और शिवपत्नी शर्वाणी, आपको बार-बार नमस्कार।

13. दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै।
    ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः॥

    Durgayai durgaparayai sarayai sarvakarinyai, khyatyai tathaiva krishnayai dhumrayai satatam namah.

    Salutations always to Durga, who carries us across hardship; who is the essence, the doer of all, renown, the dark one and the smoke-hued one.

    संकटों से पार लगाने वाली दुर्गा को, जो सबका सार, सब कुछ करने वाली, कीर्ति, कृष्णा और धूम्रा हैं, उन्हें सदा नमस्कार।

14. अतिसौम्यातिरौद्रायै नतास्तस्यै नमो नमः।
    नमो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः॥

    Atisaumyatiraudrayai natastasyai namo namah, namo jagatpratishthayai devyai krityai namo namah.

    We bow again and again to her who is both most gentle and most fierce. Salutations to the Goddess who is the foundation of the world and is action itself.

    जो अत्यंत सौम्य भी हैं और अत्यंत रौद्र भी, उन्हें हम बार-बार नमस्कार करते हैं। जगत की आधार और कर्म रूप देवी को बार-बार नमस्कार।

15. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विष्णुमायेति शब्दिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu vishnumayeti shabdita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who in all beings is called Vishnu’s Maya: salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में विष्णुमाया कही जाती हैं, उन्हें नमस्कार, उन्हें नमस्कार, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

16. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु चेतनेत्यभिधीयते।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu chetanetyabhidhiyate, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who in all beings is called consciousness: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में चेतना कही जाती हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

17. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु बुद्धिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu buddhirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as intelligence: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में बुद्धि रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

18. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु निद्रारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu nidrarupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as sleep: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में निद्रा रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

19. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षुधारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu kshudharupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as hunger: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में भूख रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

20. या देवी सर्वभूतेषुच्छायारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshuchchhayarupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as shadow: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में छाया रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

21. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu shaktirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as power: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में शक्ति रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

22. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु तृष्णारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu trishnarupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as thirst and longing: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में तृष्णा रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

23. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu kshantirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as patience: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में क्षमा और सहनशीलता रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

24. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु जातिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu jatirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as birth and kind: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में जाति (जन्म) रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

25. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु लज्जारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu lajjarupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as modesty: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में लज्जा रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

26. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu shantirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as peace: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में शांति रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

27. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु श्रद्धारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu shraddharupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as faith: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में श्रद्धा रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

28. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु कान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu kantirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as beauty and radiance: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में कांति (सौंदर्य) रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

29. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु लक्ष्मीरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu lakshmirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as fortune, Lakshmi: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में लक्ष्मी रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

30. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु वृत्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu vrittirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as livelihood and activity: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में वृत्ति (जीविका और प्रवृत्ति) रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

31. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु स्मृतिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu smritirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as memory: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में स्मृति रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

32. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु दयारूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu dayarupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as compassion: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में दया रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

33. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु तुष्टिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu tushtirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as contentment: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में संतोष रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

34. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मातृरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu matrirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as mother: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में माता रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

35. या देवी सर्वभूतेषु भ्रान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Ya devi sarvabhuteshu bhrantirupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To the Goddess who dwells in all beings as illusion and error: salutations to her again and again.

    जो देवी सब प्राणियों में भ्रांति रूप में स्थित हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

36. इन्द्रियाणामधिष्ठात्री भूतानां चाखिलेषु या।
    भूतेषु सततं तस्यै व्याप्तिदेव्यै नमो नमः॥

    Indriyanamadhishthatri bhutanam chakhileshu ya, bhuteshu satatam tasyai vyaptidevyai namo namah.

    Salutations again and again to the all-pervading Goddess, who rules over the senses and the elements and is ever present in all beings.

    जो इंद्रियों और सब भूतों की अधिष्ठात्री हैं और सब प्राणियों में सदा व्याप्त हैं, उन व्याप्ति देवी को बार-बार नमस्कार।

37. चितिरूपेण या कृत्स्नमेतद् व्याप्य स्थिता जगत्।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

    Chitirupena ya kritsnametad vyapya sthita jagat, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

    To her who pervades this whole world as consciousness: salutations to her again and again.

    जो चेतना रूप में इस पूरे जगत में व्याप्त हैं, उन्हें बार-बार नमस्कार।

38. स्तुता सुरैः पूर्वमभीष्टसंश्रयात्तथा सुरेन्द्रेण दिनेषु सेविता।
    करोतु सा नः शुभहेतुरीश्वरी शुभानि भद्राण्यभिहन्तु चापदः॥

    Stuta suraih purvamabhishtasamshrayattatha surendrena dineshu sevita, karotu sa nah shubhaheturishvari shubhani bhadranyabhihantu chapadah.

    Praised long ago by the gods for their wishes and served daily by Indra, may that Goddess, the source of all good, bring us blessings and destroy our troubles.

    जिनकी पहले देवताओं ने अपनी कामना के लिए स्तुति की और इन्द्र ने रोज़ सेवा की, वे कल्याण की कारण देवी हमारा मंगल करें और हमारी विपत्तियाँ नष्ट करें।

39. या साम्प्रतं चोद्धतदैत्यतापितैरस्माभिरीशा च सुरैर्नमस्यते।
    या च स्मृता तत्क्षणमेव हन्ति नः सर्वापदो भक्तिविनम्रमूर्तिभिः॥

    Ya sampratam choddhatadaityatapitairasmabhirisha cha surairnamasyate, ya cha smrita tatkshanameva hanti nah sarvapado bhaktivinamramurtibhih.

    She is now worshipped by us gods, tormented by arrogant demons; and when those bowed in devotion remember her, she at once destroys all their calamities.

    घमंडी दैत्यों से सताए हुए हम देवता अभी उन्हीं ईश्वरी को नमस्कार कर रहे हैं, जो भक्ति से झुके लोगों के याद करते ही उनकी सारी विपत्तियाँ उसी क्षण नष्ट कर देती हैं।

40. ऋषिरुवाच॥

    Rishiruvacha.

    The sage said:

    ऋषि ने कहा:

41. एवं स्तवादियुक्तानां देवानां तत्र पार्वती।
    स्नातुमभ्याययौ तोये जाह्नव्या नृपनन्दन॥

    Evam stavadiyuktanam devanam tatra parvati, snatumabhyayayau toye jahnavya nripanandana.

    O prince, while the gods were praising her in this way, Parvati came there to bathe in the waters of the Ganga.

    हे राजकुमार, जब देवता इस प्रकार स्तुति कर रहे थे, तब पार्वती गंगा के जल में स्नान करने वहाँ आईं।

42. साब्रवीत्तान् सुरान् सुभ्रूर्भवद्भिः स्तूयतेऽत्र का।
    शरीरकोशतश्चास्याः समुद्भूताब्रवीच्छिवा॥

    Sabravittan suran subhrurbhavadbhih stuyatetra ka, sharirakoshatashchasyah samudbhutabravichchhiva.

    The fair-browed Goddess asked the gods, “Whom are you praising here?” Then an auspicious Goddess arose from the sheath of her body and answered:

    सुंदर भौंहों वाली देवी ने देवताओं से पूछा, “आप यहाँ किसकी स्तुति कर रहे हैं?” तब उनके शरीर कोश से प्रकट हुई शिवा देवी बोलीं:

43. स्तोत्रं ममैतत् क्रियते शुम्भदैत्यनिराकृतैः।
    देवैः समेतैः समरे निशुम्भेन पराजितैः॥

    Stotram mamaitat kriyate shumbhadaityanirakritaih, devaih sametaih samare nishumbhena parajitaih.

    “This hymn is for me, sung by the gods who have gathered here, driven out by the demon Shumbha and defeated in battle by Nishumbha.”

    “यह स्तुति मेरी हो रही है, जिसे शुम्भ दैत्य द्वारा निकाले गए और युद्ध में निशुम्भ से हारे हुए देवता मिलकर कर रहे हैं।”

44. शरीरकोशाद्यत्तस्याः पार्वत्या निःसृताम्बिका।
    कौशिकीति समस्तेषु ततो लोकेषु गीयते॥

    Sharirakoshadyattasyah parvatya nihsritambika, kaushikiti samasteshu tato lokeshu giyate.

    Because Ambika came forth from the sheath (kosha) of Parvati’s body, she is sung of in all the worlds as Kaushiki.

    क्योंकि अम्बिका पार्वती के शरीर कोश से निकलीं, इसलिए वे सब लोकों में कौशिकी नाम से गाई जाती हैं।

45. तस्यां विनिर्गतायां तु कृष्णाभूत्सापि पार्वती।
    कालिकेति समाख्याता हिमाचलकृताश्रया॥

    Tasyam vinirgatayam tu krishnabhutsapi parvati, kaliketi samakhyata himachalakritashraya.

    When she had come out, Parvati herself turned dark and became known as Kalika, who dwells in the Himalaya.

    उनके निकल जाने पर पार्वती स्वयं काली पड़ गईं और हिमालय पर रहने वाली कालिका के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुईं।

46. ततोऽम्बिकां परं रूपं बिभ्राणां सुमनोहरम्।
    ददर्श चण्डो मुण्डश्च भृत्यौ शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः॥

    Tatombikam param rupam bibhranam sumanoharam, dadarsha chando mundashcha bhrityau shumbhanishumbhayoh.

    Then Chanda and Munda, servants of Shumbha and Nishumbha, saw Ambika in her supreme and enchanting form.

    तब शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के सेवक चण्ड और मुण्ड ने अत्यंत मनोहर, परम रूप धारण किए अम्बिका को देखा।

47. ताभ्यां शुम्भाय चाख्याता अतीव सुमनोहरा।
    काप्यास्ते स्त्री महाराज भासयन्ती हिमाचलम्॥

    Tabhyam shumbhaya chakhyata ativa sumanohara, kapyaste stri maharaja bhasayanti himachalam.

    They told Shumbha: “Great king, there is a woman of extraordinary beauty there, lighting up the Himalaya.”

    उन्होंने शुम्भ से कहा: “महाराज, वहाँ एक अत्यंत सुंदर स्त्री है, जो हिमालय को प्रकाशित कर रही है।”

48. नैव तादृक् क्वचिद्रूपं दृष्टं केनचिदुत्तमम्।
    ज्ञायतां काप्यसौ देवी गृह्यतां चासुरेश्वर॥

    Naiva tadrik kvachidrupam drishtam kenachiduttamam, jnayatam kapyasau devi grihyatam chasureshvara.

    “No one has ever seen such beauty anywhere. Find out who this goddess is, lord of demons, and take her.”

    “ऐसा उत्तम रूप किसी ने कहीं नहीं देखा। हे असुरराज, पता लगाइए कि यह देवी कौन है, और उसे अपना बना लीजिए।”

49. स्त्रीरत्नमतिचार्वङ्गी द्योतयन्ती दिशस्त्विषा।
    सा तु तिष्ठति दैत्येन्द्र तां भवान् द्रष्टुमर्हति॥

    Striratnamaticharvangi dyotayanti dishastvisha, sa tu tishthati daityendra tam bhavan drashtumarhati.

    “She is a jewel among women, lovely in every limb, lighting up every direction with her glow. She is there, lord of demons; you should see her.”

    “वह स्त्रियों में रत्न है, उसका हर अंग सुंदर है और वह अपनी कांति से दिशाओं को चमका रही है। हे दैत्यराज, वह वहीं है, आपको उसे देखना चाहिए।”

50. यानि रत्नानि मणयो गजाश्वादीनि वै प्रभो।
    त्रैलोक्ये तु समस्तानि साम्प्रतं भान्ति ते गृहे॥

    Yani ratnani manayo gajashvadini vai prabho, trailokye tu samastani sampratam bhanti te grihe.

    “Lord, all the jewels, gems, elephants, horses and other treasures of the three worlds now shine in your house.”

    “प्रभु, तीनों लोकों के सारे रत्न, मणियाँ, हाथी, घोड़े आदि अब आपके घर की शोभा बढ़ा रहे हैं।”

51. ऐरावतः समानीतो गजरत्नं पुरन्दरात्।
    पारिजाततरुश्चायं तथैवोच्चैःश्रवा हयः॥

    Airavatah samanito gajaratnam purandarat, parijatatarushchayam tathaivochchaihshrava hayah.

    “Airavata, the finest of elephants, has been brought from Indra, and so have the Parijata tree and the horse Ucchaihshravas.”

    “हाथियों में रत्न ऐरावत इन्द्र से लाया गया है, और पारिजात वृक्ष तथा उच्चैःश्रवा घोड़ा भी।”

52. विमानं हंससंयुक्तमेतत्तिष्ठति तेऽङ्गणे।
    रत्नभूतमिहानीतं यदासीद्वेधसोऽद्भुतम्॥

    Vimanam hamsasamyuktametattishthati tengane, ratnabhutamihanitam yadasidvedhasodbhutam.

    “This wondrous chariot drawn by swans, once Brahma’s treasure, has been brought here and stands in your courtyard.”

    “हंसों से जुता यह अद्भुत विमान, जो ब्रह्मा का रत्न था, यहाँ लाया गया है और आपके आँगन में खड़ा है।”

53. निधिरेष महापद्मः समानीतो धनेश्वरात्।
    किञ्जल्किनीं ददौ चाब्धिर्मालामम्लानपङ्कजाम्॥

    Nidhiresha mahapadmah samanito dhaneshvarat, kinjalkinim dadau chabdhirmalamamlanapankajam.

    “The great treasure Mahapadma has been brought from Kubera, lord of wealth, and the ocean gave you a garland of unfading lotuses.”

    “धन के स्वामी कुबेर से महापद्म नाम की निधि लाई गई है, और समुद्र ने आपको कभी न मुरझाने वाले कमलों की माला दी है।”

54. छत्रं ते वारुणं गेहे काञ्चनस्रावि तिष्ठति।
    तथायं स्यन्दनवरो यः पुराऽऽसीत्प्रजापतेः॥

    Chhatram te varunam gehe kanchanasravi tishthati, tathayam syandanavaro yah purasitprajapateh.

    “Varuna’s umbrella, which showers gold, stands in your house, and so does this finest chariot that once belonged to Prajapati.”

    “सोना बरसाने वाला वरुण का छत्र आपके घर में है, और प्रजापति का वह श्रेष्ठ रथ भी, जो पहले उनका था।”

55. मृत्योरुत्क्रान्तिदा नाम शक्तिरीश त्वया हृता।
    पाशः सलिलराजस्य भ्रातुस्तव परिग्रहे॥

    Mrityorutkrantida nama shaktirisha tvaya hrita, pashah salilarajasya bhratustava parigrahe.

    “Lord, you have taken Death’s power that draws out life, and the noose of Varuna, king of waters, is held by your brother.”

    “स्वामी, आपने मृत्यु की प्राण खींचने वाली शक्ति छीन ली है, और जल के राजा वरुण का पाश आपके भाई के पास है।”

56. निशुम्भस्याब्धिजाताश्च समस्ता रत्नजातयः।
    वह्निरपि ददौ तुभ्यमग्निशौचे च वाससी॥

    Nishumbhasyabdhijatashcha samasta ratnajatayah, vahnirapi dadau tubhyamagnishauche cha vasasi.

    “Nishumbha has every kind of gem born of the ocean, and even Agni gave you two garments purified by fire.”

    “समुद्र से उत्पन्न हर प्रकार के रत्न निशुम्भ के पास हैं, और अग्नि ने भी आपको अग्नि से शुद्ध दो वस्त्र दिए हैं।”

57. एवं दैत्येन्द्र रत्नानि समस्तान्याहृतानि ते।
    स्त्रीरत्नमेषा कल्याणी त्वया कस्मान्न गृह्यते॥

    Evam daityendra ratnani samastanyahritani te, striratnamesha kalyani tvaya kasmanna grihyate.

    “So, lord of demons, every treasure has been brought to you. Why do you not take this lovely woman, the jewel among women?”

    “इस तरह, हे दैत्यराज, सारे रत्न आपके पास आ गए हैं। फिर स्त्रियों में रत्न इस सुंदरी को आप क्यों नहीं अपनाते?”

58. ऋषिरुवाच॥

    Rishiruvacha.

    The sage said:

    ऋषि ने कहा:

59. निशम्येति वचः शुम्भः स तदा चण्डमुण्डयोः।
    प्रेषयामास सुग्रीवं दूतं देव्या महासुरम्॥

    Nishamyeti vachah shumbhah sa tada chandamundayoh, preshayamasa sugrivam dutam devya mahasuram.

    Hearing these words of Chanda and Munda, Shumbha sent the great demon Sugriva to the Goddess as his messenger.

    चण्ड और मुण्ड की यह बात सुनकर शुम्भ ने महादैत्य सुग्रीव को दूत बनाकर देवी के पास भेजा।

60. इति चेति च वक्तव्या सा गत्वा वचनान्मम।
    यथा चाभ्येति सम्प्रीत्या तथा कार्यं त्वया लघु॥

    Iti cheti cha vaktavya sa gatva vachananmama, yatha chabhyeti sampritya tatha karyam tvaya laghu.

    “Go and tell her all this from me, and act quickly so that she comes to me gladly.”

    “जाकर मेरी ओर से उससे यह-यह कहना, और जल्दी ऐसा करना कि वह प्रसन्न होकर मेरे पास आ जाए।”

61. स तत्र गत्वा यत्रास्ते शैलोद्देशेऽतिशोभने।
    सा देवी तां ततः प्राह श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा॥

    Sa tatra gatva yatraste shailoddeshetishobhane, sa devi tam tatah praha shlakshnam madhuraya gira.

    He went to the beautiful mountain place where the Goddess was, and spoke to her in soft, sweet words.

    वह पर्वत के उस अत्यंत सुंदर स्थान पर गया जहाँ देवी थीं, और कोमल, मीठी वाणी में उनसे बोला।

62. दूत उवाच॥

    Duta uvacha.

    The messenger said:

    दूत ने कहा:

63. देवि दैत्येश्वरः शुम्भस्त्रैलोक्ये परमेश्वरः।
    दूतोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः॥

    Devi daityeshvarah shumbhastrailokye parameshvarah, dutoham preshitastena tvatsakashamihagatah.

    “Goddess, Shumbha, king of the demons, is supreme lord of the three worlds. I am his messenger, sent here to you.”

    “देवी, दैत्यराज शुम्भ तीनों लोकों के परम स्वामी हैं। मैं उनका दूत हूँ और उन्होंने मुझे आपके पास भेजा है।”

64. अव्याहताज्ञः सर्वासु यः सदा देवयोनिषु।
    निर्जिताखिलदैत्यारिः स यदाह शृणुष्व तत्॥

    Avyahatajnah sarvasu yah sada devayonishu, nirjitakhiladaityarih sa yadaha shrinushva tat.

    “His command is never defied among the gods, and he has conquered every enemy of the demons. Hear what he says.”

    “देवताओं में कोई उनकी आज्ञा नहीं टालता, और उन्होंने दैत्यों के सारे शत्रुओं को जीत लिया है। सुनिए, वे क्या कहते हैं।”

65. मम त्रैलोक्यमखिलं मम देवा वशानुगाः।
    यज्ञभागानहं सर्वानुपाश्नामि पृथक् पृथक्॥

    Mama trailokyamakhilam mama deva vashanugah, yajnabhaganaham sarvanupashnami prithak prithak.

    “The three worlds are all mine, and the gods obey me. I enjoy every share of the sacrifices, one by one.”

    “तीनों लोक मेरे हैं और देवता मेरे वश में हैं। यज्ञों के सारे भाग मैं अलग-अलग भोगता हूँ।”

66. त्रैलोक्ये वररत्नानि मम वश्यान्यशेषतः।
    तथैव गजरत्नं च हृत्वा देवेन्द्रवाहनम्॥

    Trailokye vararatnani mama vashyanyasheshatah, tathaiva gajaratnam cha hritva devendravahanam.

    “All the finest treasures of the three worlds are mine, including the jewel of elephants that I took from Indra, whose mount it was.”

    “तीनों लोकों के सारे श्रेष्ठ रत्न मेरे अधीन हैं, और देवराज इन्द्र का वाहन, हाथियों में रत्न ऐरावत भी मैंने छीन लिया है।”

67. क्षीरोदमथनोद्भूतमश्वरत्नं ममामरैः।
    उच्चैःश्रवससंज्ञं तत्प्रणिपत्य समर्पितम्॥

    Kshirodamathanodbhutamashvaratnam mamamaraih, uchchaihshravasasanjnam tatpranipatya samarpitam.

    “The gods bowed and offered me the jewel of horses, Ucchaihshravas, born from the churning of the ocean of milk.”

    “क्षीरसागर के मंथन से निकला घोड़ों में रत्न उच्चैःश्रवा देवताओं ने झुककर मुझे सौंप दिया।”

68. यानि चान्यानि देवेषु गन्धर्वेषूरगेषु च।
    रत्नभूतानि भूतानि तानि मय्येव शोभने॥

    Yani chanyani deveshu gandharveshurageshu cha, ratnabhutani bhutani tani mayyeva shobhane.

    “Whatever other treasures the gods, gandharvas and serpents had, lovely one, all of them are now with me.”

    “हे सुंदरी, देवताओं, गंधर्वों और नागों के पास जो भी रत्न थे, वे सब अब मेरे पास हैं।”

69. स्त्रीरत्नभूतां त्वां देवि लोके मन्यामहे वयम्।
    सा त्वमस्मानुपागच्छ यतो रत्नभुजो वयम्॥

    Striratnabhutam tvam devi loke manyamahe vayam, sa tvamasmanupagachchha yato ratnabhujo vayam.

    “Goddess, we consider you the jewel among women in the world. So come to us, for we are the ones who enjoy every treasure.”

    “देवी, हम आपको संसार की स्त्रियों में रत्न मानते हैं। इसलिए आप हमारे पास आइए, क्योंकि सारे रत्नों के भोगने वाले हम ही हैं।”

70. मां वा ममानुजं वापि निशुम्भमुरुविक्रमम्।
    भज त्वं चञ्चलापाङ्गि रत्नभूतासि वै यतः॥

    Mam va mamanujam vapi nishumbhamuruvikramam, bhaja tvam chanchalapangi ratnabhutasi vai yatah.

    “You of the restless glances, choose me or my mighty younger brother Nishumbha, for you are truly a treasure.”

    “हे चंचल नयनों वाली, आप मुझे या मेरे पराक्रमी छोटे भाई निशुम्भ को अपनाइए, क्योंकि आप सचमुच एक रत्न हैं।”

71. परमैश्वर्यमतुलं प्राप्स्यसे मत्परिग्रहात्।
    एतद् बुद्ध्या समालोच्य मत्परिग्रहतां व्रज॥

    Paramaishvaryamatulam prapsyase matparigrahat, etad buddhya samalochya matparigrahatam vraja.

    “By becoming mine you will gain supreme, unmatched wealth and power. Think it over wisely and become mine.”

    “मुझसे विवाह करके आपको अनुपम ऐश्वर्य मिलेगा। बुद्धि से विचार करके मेरी पत्नी बन जाइए।”

72. ऋषिरुवाच॥

    Rishiruvacha.

    The sage said:

    ऋषि ने कहा:

73. इत्युक्ता सा तदा देवी गम्भीरान्तःस्मिता जगौ।
    दुर्गा भगवती भद्रा ययेदं धार्यते जगत्॥

    Ityukta sa tada devi gambhirantahsmita jagau, durga bhagavati bhadra yayedam dharyate jagat.

    Hearing this, the gracious Goddess Durga, who upholds this whole world, smiled inwardly and gave a grave reply.

    यह सुनकर इस संसार को धारण करने वाली कल्याणमयी भगवती दुर्गा मन ही मन मुस्कुराईं और गंभीरता से बोलीं।

74. देव्युवाच॥

    Devyuvacha.

    The Goddess said:

    देवी ने कहा:

75. सत्यमुक्तं त्वया नात्र मिथ्या किञ्चित्त्वयोदितम्।
    त्रैलोक्याधिपतिः शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चापि तादृशः॥

    Satyamuktam tvaya natra mithya kinchittvayoditam, trailokyadhipatih shumbho nishumbhashchapi tadrishah.

    “What you say is true; nothing in it is false. Shumbha is lord of the three worlds, and Nishumbha is just as great.”

    “तुमने सच कहा है, इसमें कुछ भी झूठ नहीं। शुम्भ तीनों लोकों का स्वामी है और निशुम्भ भी वैसा ही है।”

76. किं त्वत्र यत्प्रतिज्ञातं मिथ्या तत्क्रियते कथम्।
    श्रूयतामल्पबुद्धित्वात्प्रतिज्ञा या कृता पुरा॥

    Kim tvatra yatpratijnatam mithya tatkriyate katham, shruyatamalpabuddhitvatpratijna ya krita pura.

    “But how can I break a vow I have made? Hear the vow I once made out of my little understanding.”

    “पर मैंने जो प्रतिज्ञा की है, उसे झूठा कैसे करूँ? सुनो, अपनी थोड़ी समझ से मैंने पहले कौन-सी प्रतिज्ञा की थी।”

77. यो मां जयति सङ्ग्रामे यो मे दर्पं व्यपोहति।
    यो मे प्रतिबलो लोके स मे भर्ता भविष्यति॥

    Yo mam jayati sangrame yo me darpam vyapohati, yo me pratibalo loke sa me bharta bhavishyati.

    “Whoever defeats me in battle, whoever breaks my pride, whoever is my equal in strength in this world, he will be my husband.”

    “जो मुझे युद्ध में जीत ले, जो मेरा घमंड चूर कर दे, और जो संसार में मेरे बराबर बलवान हो, वही मेरा पति होगा।”

78. तदागच्छतु शुम्भोऽत्र निशुम्भो वा महासुरः।
    मां जित्वा किं चिरेणात्र पाणिं गृह्णातु मे लघु॥

    Tadagachchhatu shumbhotra nishumbho va mahasurah, mam jitva kim chirenatra panim grihnatu me laghu.

    “So let Shumbha or the great demon Nishumbha come here, defeat me, and take my hand at once. Why delay?”

    “तो शुम्भ या महादैत्य निशुम्भ यहाँ आए, मुझे जीते और जल्दी मेरा हाथ थाम ले। देर किस बात की?”

79. दूत उवाच॥

    Duta uvacha.

    The messenger said:

    दूत ने कहा:

80. अवलिप्तासि मैवं त्वं देवि ब्रूहि ममाग्रतः।
    त्रैलोक्ये कः पुमांस्तिष्ठेदग्रे शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः॥

    Avaliptasi maivam tvam devi bruhi mamagratah, trailokye kah pumamstishthedagre shumbhanishumbhayoh.

    “You are proud, Goddess. Do not speak like this before me. What man in the three worlds can stand up to Shumbha and Nishumbha?”

    “देवी, तुम घमंड में हो। मेरे सामने ऐसा मत बोलो। तीनों लोकों में कौन पुरुष शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के सामने टिक सकता है?”

81. अन्येषामपि दैत्यानां सर्वे देवा न वै युधि।
    तिष्ठन्ति सम्मुखे देवि किं पुनः स्त्री त्वमेकिका॥

    Anyeshamapi daityanam sarve deva na vai yudhi, tishthanti sammukhe devi kim punah stri tvamekika.

    “All the gods together cannot face even the other demons in battle, Goddess; what then of you, a woman alone?”

    “देवी, सारे देवता मिलकर भी युद्ध में दूसरे दैत्यों के सामने नहीं टिकते, फिर तुम तो एक अकेली स्त्री हो।”

82. इन्द्राद्याः सकला देवास्तस्थुर्येषां न संयुगे।
    शुम्भादीनां कथं तेषां स्त्री प्रयास्यसि सम्मुखम्॥

    Indradyah sakala devastasthuryesham na samyuge, shumbhadinam katham tesham stri prayasyasi sammukham.

    “Indra and all the gods could not stand before Shumbha and the others in battle. How will you, a woman, face them?”

    “जिन शुम्भ आदि के सामने इन्द्र आदि सारे देवता युद्ध में नहीं टिक सके, उनके सामने तुम स्त्री होकर कैसे जाओगी?”

83. सा त्वं गच्छ मयैवोक्ता पार्श्वं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः।
    केशाकर्षणनिर्धूतगौरवा मा गमिष्यसि॥

    Sa tvam gachchha mayaivokta parshvam shumbhanishumbhayoh, keshakarshananirdhutagaurava ma gamishyasi.

    “So go to Shumbha and Nishumbha as I tell you, or you will be dragged there by your hair, your dignity lost.”

    “इसलिए मेरे कहने से ही शुम्भ-निशुम्भ के पास चली चलो, नहीं तो बाल पकड़कर घसीटी जाओगी और तुम्हारा मान नष्ट हो जाएगा।”

84. देव्युवाच॥

    Devyuvacha.

    The Goddess said:

    देवी ने कहा:

85. एवमेतद् बली शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चातिवीर्यवान्।
    किं करोमि प्रतिज्ञा मे यदनालोचिता पुरा॥

    Evametad bali shumbho nishumbhashchativiryavan, kim karomi pratijna me yadanalochita pura.

    “It is so: Shumbha is strong and Nishumbha very mighty. But what can I do? I made my vow long ago without thinking.”

    “यह सच है कि शुम्भ बलवान है और निशुम्भ भी बड़ा पराक्रमी है। पर मैं क्या करूँ? मैंने बिना सोचे-समझे पहले ही प्रतिज्ञा कर ली थी।”

86. स त्वं गच्छ मयोक्तं ते यदेतत्सर्वमादृतः।
    तदाचक्ष्वासुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु तत्॥

    Sa tvam gachchha mayoktam te yadetatsarvamadritah, tadachakshvasurendraya sa cha yuktam karotu tat.

    “So go and tell the lord of demons, with due respect, all that I have said, and let him do what is fitting.”

    “इसलिए तुम जाओ और मैंने जो कुछ कहा है, वह सब आदर के साथ असुरराज को बता दो। फिर वह जो उचित हो, करे।”

87. इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये देव्या दूतसंवादो नाम पञ्चमोऽध्यायः॥

    Iti shrimarkandeyapurane savarnike manvantare devimahatmye devya dutasamvado nama panchamodhyayah.

    Thus ends the fifth chapter of the Devi Mahatmya in the Markandeya Purana: the Goddess’s talk with the messenger.

    इस प्रकार मार्कण्डेय पुराण के देवी माहात्म्य का ‘देवी-दूत संवाद’ नाम का पाँचवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ।
