Om bandhukakanchananibham ruchirakshamalam pashankushau cha varadam nijabahudandaih, bibhranamindushakalabharanam trinetramardhambikeshamanisham vapurashrayami.

Om. I always take refuge in the form that is half Ambika and half Shiva, glowing like the bandhuka flower and gold, holding in its arms a lovely rosary, noose, goad and the sign of granting boons, adorned with the crescent moon, and three-eyed.

Vichitramidamakhyatam bhagavan bhavata mama, devyashcharitamahatmyam raktabijavadhashritam.

Revered one, what a wonderful tale you have told me of the Goddess’s glory, the story of how Raktabija was slain.

Bhuyashchechchhamyaham shrotum raktabije nipatite, chakara shumbho yatkarma nishumbhashchatikopanah.

I want to hear more: after Raktabija fell, what did Shumbha and the furious Nishumbha do?

    Rishiruvacha.

    The sage said:

Chakara kopamatulam raktabije nipatite, shumbhasuro nishumbhashcha hateshvanyeshu chahave.

When Raktabija and the others had been slain in battle, the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha flew into a boundless rage.

    Hanyamanam mahasainyam vilokyamarshamudvahan, abhyadhavannishumbhotha mukhyayasurasenaya.

Seeing his great army being destroyed, Nishumbha, burning with fury, charged forward with the best of the demon forces.

Tasyagratastatha prishthe parshvayoshcha mahasurah, sandashtaushthaputah kruddha hantum devimupayayuh.

In front of him, behind him and on both sides, great demons came on in anger, biting their lips, to kill the Goddess.

Ajagama mahaviryah shumbhopi svabalairvritah, nihantum chandikam kopatkritva yuddham tu matribhih.

The mighty Shumbha too came, surrounded by his troops, to kill Chandika in his rage, after fighting the Mother goddesses.

Tato yuddhamativasiddevya shumbhanishumbhayoh, sharavarshamativogram meghayoriva varshatoh.

Then a fierce battle broke out between the Goddess and Shumbha and Nishumbha, who rained arrows on her like two storm clouds pouring rain.

Chichchhedastanchharamstabhyam chandika svasharotkaraih, tadayamasa changeshu shastraughairasureshvarau.

Chandika cut down the arrows they shot with showers of her own, and struck the two demon lords on their bodies with a flood of weapons.

Nishumbho nishitam khadgam charma chadaya suprabham, atadayanmurdhni simham devya vahanamuttamam.

Nishumbha took up a sharp sword and a gleaming shield and struck the Goddess’s noble lion on the head.

Tadite vahane devi kshuraprenasimuttamam, nishumbhasyashu chichchheda charma chapyashtachandrakam.

When her mount was struck, the Goddess swiftly cut through Nishumbha’s fine sword and his shield, marked with eight moons, with a razor-edged arrow.

Chhinne charmani khadge cha shaktim chikshepa sosurah, tamapyasya dvidha chakre chakrenabhimukhagatam.

With shield and sword broken, the demon hurled his spear; but as it flew at her, she split it in two with her discus.

Kopadhmato nishumbhotha shulam jagraha danavah, ayatam mushtipatena devi tachchapyachurnayat.

Swollen with rage, Nishumbha seized a trident; as it came, the Goddess smashed it to pieces with a blow of her fist.

Avidhyatha gadam sopi chikshepa chandikam prati, sapi devya trishulena bhinna bhasmatvamagata.

Then he whirled a mace and threw it at Chandika; struck by the Goddess’s trident, it too was reduced to ashes.

Tatah parashuhastam tamayantam daityapungavam, ahatya devi banaughairapatayata bhutale.

As that chief of demons came at her with an axe in hand, the Goddess struck him with a flood of arrows and brought him to the ground.

Tasminnipatite bhumau nishumbhe bhimavikrame, bhrataryativa sankruddhah prayayau hantumambikam.

When his brother Nishumbha, of terrible valour, fell to the ground, Shumbha, wild with anger, rushed out to kill Ambika.

    Sa rathasthastathatyuchchairgrihitaparamayudhaih, bhujairashtabhiratulairvyapyashesham babhau nabhah.

Standing tall in his chariot, his eight matchless arms raised high with mighty weapons, he seemed to fill the whole sky.

Tamayantam samalokya devi shankhamavadayat, jyashabdam chapi dhanushashchakarativa duhsaham.

Seeing him come, the Goddess blew her conch and twanged her bowstring with a sound almost too much to bear.

Purayamasa kakubho nijaghantasvanena cha, samastadaityasainyanam tejovadhavidhayina.

She filled every direction with the ringing of her bell, which drained the strength of the whole demon army.

Tatah simho mahanadaistyajitebhamahamadaih, purayamasa gaganam gam tathaiva disho dasha.

Then the lion, with great roars that made even rutting elephants lose their pride, filled the sky, the earth and all ten directions.

Tatah kali samutpatya gaganam kshmamatadayat, karabhyam tanninadena praksvanaste tirohitah.

Then Kali leapt into the sky and struck the earth with both hands; the roar of it drowned out all the sounds before.

Attattahasamashivam shivaduti chakara ha, taih shabdairasurastresuh shumbhah kopam param yayau.

Shivaduti let out a terrible, ominous laugh; the demons trembled at these sounds, and Shumbha grew wildly angry.

Duratmamstishtha tishtheti vyajaharambika yada, tada jayetyabhihitam devairakashasamsthitaih.

When Ambika cried, ‘Stop, stop, wicked one!’, the gods standing in the sky shouted, ‘Victory!’

Shumbhenagatya ya shaktirmukta jvalatibhishana, ayanti vahnikutabha sa nirasta maholkaya.

The spear Shumbha hurled as he came, blazing terribly like a mountain of fire, was beaten back by her with a great fiery meteor.

Simhanadena shumbhasya vyaptam lokatrayantaram, nirghatanihsvano ghoro jitavanavanipate.

Shumbha’s lion-like roar filled the three worlds, O king, but the terrible thunder of the Goddess overpowered it.

Shumbhamuktanchharandevi shumbhastatprahitanchharan, chichchheda svasharairugraih shatashotha sahasrashah.

The Goddess cut down the arrows Shumbha shot, and Shumbha cut down hers, each with fierce arrows, by the hundreds and thousands.

Tatah sa chandika kruddha shulenabhijaghana tam, sa tadabhihato bhumau murchchhito nipapata ha.

Then Chandika, enraged, struck him with her trident, and wounded, he fell senseless to the ground.

Tato nishumbhah samprapya chetanamattakarmukah, ajaghana sharairdevim kalim kesarinam tatha.

Then Nishumbha came to his senses, seized his bow, and struck the Goddess, Kali and the lion with arrows.

Punashcha kritva bahunamayutam danujeshvarah, chakrayudhena ditijashchhadayamasa chandikam.

Again that demon lord made himself ten thousand arms and covered Chandika with a hail of discuses.

Tato bhagavati kruddha durga durgartinashini, chichchheda tani chakrani svasharaih sayakamshcha tan.

Then the blessed Durga, who ends suffering in hard times, angered, cut down those discuses and arrows with her own arrows.

Tato nishumbho vegena gadamadaya chandikam, abhyadhavata vai hantum daityasenasamavritah.

Then Nishumbha, surrounded by the demon army, grabbed a mace and rushed at Chandika to kill her.

Tasyapatata evashu gadam chichchheda chandika, khadgena shitadharena sa cha shulam samadade.

As he charged, Chandika quickly cut his mace apart with her sharp-edged sword, and he took up a trident.

Shulahastam samayantam nishumbhamamarardanam, hridi vivyadha shulena vegaviddhena chandika.

As Nishumbha, tormentor of the gods, came at her trident in hand, Chandika hurled her own trident with force and pierced his heart.

Bhinnasya tasya shulena hridayannihsritoparah, mahabalo mahaviryastishtheti purusho vadan.

From his pierced heart came out another being, of great strength and valour, shouting ‘Stop!’

Tasya nishkramato devi prahasya svanavattatah, shirashchichchheda khadgena tatosavapatadbhuvi.

As he emerged, the Goddess laughed aloud and cut off his head with her sword, and he fell to the ground.

Tatah simhashchakhadogram damshtrakshunnashirodharan, asuramstamstatha kali shivaduti tathaparan.

Then the lion devoured those demons whose necks he had crushed in his fierce fangs, and Kali and Shivaduti devoured others.

Some great demons perished, pierced by Kaumari’s spear; others were driven off by water purified with Brahmani’s mantras.

Maheshvaritrishulena bhinnah petustathapare, varahitundaghatena kechichchurnikrita bhuvi.

Others fell, pierced by Maheshvari’s trident; some were crushed to dust on the ground by blows of Varahi’s snout.

Khandam khandam cha chakrena vaishnavya danavah kritah, vajrena chaindrihastagravimuktena tathapare.

Demons were cut to pieces by Vaishnavi’s discus, and others by the thunderbolt flung from Aindri’s hand.

Some demons perished, some fled the great battle, and others were devoured by Kali, Shivaduti and the lion.

Thus ends the ninth chapter of the Devi Mahatmya in the Markandeya Purana, in the age of Savarni Manu: the slaying of Nishumbha.
