At the north side of the gateway of the holy tower at mighty Arunai, I went and saw him: the younger brother of the great pot-bellied elephant god, who eats sweets from his trunk and before whom devotees rap their heads.

How wondrous that he showed me, who had no merit or penance at all, the way out of the mire called worldly life: the son of Shiva, who wears the Ganga, a snake, konrai and thumbai flowers and the crescent moon on his red matted hair, the mine of compassion.

Why don’t you lovingly learn, without a letter wrong, the verses on the spear-bearing lord who frees us from dying and being born again? Will you learn poetry when fierce Death, eyes blazing and smoking with rage, throws his noose around your neck and drags you away?

When the sharp spear in the red hand of the son of Shiva, who rode his chariot and burned the three cities, was sent forth, Krauncha mountain crumbled to atoms, the ranks of demons around it collapsed, Sura’s great army was ruined, and Indra’s world was saved.

The five senses won’t let me reflect, won’t let me think of the One, won’t let me reach your feet with flowers: what can I do? O you who, to save the gods, killed the thieving, cruel Sura in the blink of an eye with your sharp dagger, so his dark body poured out blood!

The world calls him the lord of the hill country: the child who drank the holy milk of the golden Goddess who gave birth to the worlds, who lay in the flower cradle of Saravana, and longing for the milk of the six mothers, sobbed so that the sea, the mountains and Sura all wept.

When I slowly meditated with true love on Kumaran, who longs for the innocent girl guarding the millet in the great green field, and tasted the unique supreme bliss that sprouted within, that very day sugarcane turned astringent and red honey sour and bitter.

Remove the delusion from my heart, caught in deceit and struggling in foolish deeds, O guardian who hurled the spear so that ghouls leapt, bathed, revelled and drank in the pool of blood from the demons’ chests, and danced proudly on the field of victory!

How wondrous that the six-faced teacher clearly revealed to me the honey of bliss that ripened from grace on the peak of the lofty mountain of wisdom born of light: the pure emptiness born of open space since time without beginning, the bare, lone reality.

The lord of divine Valli, whose words even honey and syrup cannot match, taught me something that day. Can it be told? It is not sky, not wind, not fire, not water, not earth; not he, not I; not bodiless, and not embodied.

How wondrous that he let me enter the state beyond words, where, having let go of everything, one simply is! This was the power of the lord with mountain shoulders, who embraces Valli, sweet-voiced as the kolli melody, her lips red as the kovvai fruit of the hills.

When the victorious spear-bearer rode out on his mount, swifter than a whipped horse, so the demons’ entrails churned, the wind from its swaying tail feathers shook Mount Meru; under its tread the mountains of the eight directions turned to dust, and that dust filled the ocean into dry land.

When the rooster that came to the spear-bearing lord as his banner of victory beat its wings, the ocean split, the shell of the cosmos cracked, the ancient clusters of stars fell, and the hills in between and great Mount Meru were shattered.

When the bells at the holy waist of the son of the Goddess who shares Shiva’s body rang out, the demons were startled and terrified, the directions were deafened, the eight mountains and the great golden mountain shook, and the gods’ fear was ended.

Lift up this attached heart of mine, spun around by the five senses that dance through this bodily life. O Shanmukha with twelve hands, who clapped as a child so the eight mountains split in half, Meru shook and the gods were saved!

The small feet of the nephew of Vishnu, who asked Mahabali for three steps of land and stretched his red feet to touch the roof of the ancient cosmos, have touched the leaping peacock, the heads of the gods, and even the palm leaves of my verses.

Restrain your mind, give up anger, always give to others, and stay as you are. Then the grace of the king who hurled his sharp spear to pierce the fiercely angry Sura and the mountain, saving the seven worlds, will come and reveal itself to you on its own.

O mind, with the lotus feet of the spear-bearer, wondrous with Vedas and Agamas, adorned with vetchi flowers and anklets, as your fortress, go now and hide in that open space beyond night and day, free of all deceit, and simply be: a state no being can know.

Praise the lord of the sharp, shining spear, and always share with the poor, even half a broken grain. See: just as your body’s empty shadow gives you no shelter from the sun, the wealth in your hand will not help you on your last journey.

O lord whose sharp spear pierced right through the famed Krauncha mountain, whose chest wears a garland of kadamba flowers! I reached silence, knew you again and again, took on the quality-less state where all is one, and forgot myself: this body as good as died.

You fools who think you can live in this world without bowing at the feet of the lord with the rooster flag! Your heavy karma and the power of fate won’t let you enjoy your wealth. Bury it all deep: will it follow you when you are gone?

We have no fear of death, for we always have the radiant peacock and the spear as our companions. O lord of glorious feet with bud-like bells, protector of Sachi Devi’s marriage thread, mine of compassion, mine of wisdom, sun among the gods!

Do you see, Death? With the shining sword of serene wisdom I hold as a servant of the spear-bearer of Tiruchendur, I will strike so your mace and trident fall, and cut you down. Come, Death, just come within reach of my hand!

The lord who rides the blue peacock will come at any moment with his lovely hill-maiden Valli. Shiva-yogis who slowly understand the way the guru taught will conquer time; only those caught in mere ritual will die.

So that I need not tremble at the sight of Death’s summons and messengers, there stand before me morning and evening Kandan’s garment at his waist, the dagger he wears, the red vetchi garland in his hand, the rooster banner, the peacock and the garland of victory.

One can only fall at the red feet of the lord whose hand shines with the spear, bow down in love, and see him that way. How can anyone describe the reality that mind, word and deed cannot reach, both formless and with form, and ever one?

At Tiruchendur, the fields and groves were churned by leaping fish; the hearts of flower-like women were undone by love for him who wears honeyed kadamba; the sea, Sura and the mountain were destroyed by the spear of the lord of the great peacock; and here, touched by his feet, Brahma’s writing on my head was wiped away.

He told me to dwell in that unique home no being knows, beyond speech and feeling, and not in this house of the elements: the spear-bearer who became guru to Shiva, destroyer of the three cities, who flayed the fighting elephant with two tusks and one trunk and wore its hide; he who ended cruel Sura’s race.

See, if you join the band of devotees of him who hurled his shining spear at Sura and the mountain, there is nothing but salvation. O sinful, wandering heart, you don’t know that all the wealth of those who ride about with armies, in chariots, on elephants and horses, is like writing on water.

I praise you with the Tiruppugazh I recite; when Death catches me with his noose, come and say ‘Fear not’. O nephew of Krishna, who danced on the great serpent! O horseman riding the matchless peacock whose plumes smashed the mountain so cruel Sura trembled!

Bow to him who drew his spear and split the mountain apart, and with love practise lasting austerity. See: the food packed for the long road ahead, and your true companion, is whatever you share with those who ask, even if it is only a leaf or a little cooked food.

Grant me the longing to praise in pure Tamil the spear that split the peaked mountain, and the red rooster. O prince who rides the peacock, match for the hooded serpent! O Guha, steadfast scatterer of the demon hosts, highest in virtue!

Those who neither sing of Kumaran, beloved of the hunter maiden, with true and melting love, nor give while they have, will by their sin earn and bury wealth, lose it to thieves, grow bewildered and weary, wither in grief, and waste their days for nothing.

How wondrous is what the flawless spear-bearer taught me, he who split the mountain, beheaded the demons and dried up the sea: that vision in which the five elements, speech, feeling, body, life and every means fall away, with no shore, no darkness and no ‘mine’.

Something with no going or coming, no night or day, no outside or inside, no word, form or end, comes again and again and strikes me; it brings stillness of mind on its own and makes me wholly its own. O six-faced lord, this bliss cannot be told.

To dwell in the place beyond night and day is not easy: you need the grace of the son of Shiva, whose hair wears serpents; you must worship with melting love his feet adorned with kura flowers and anklets; the cruel five senses must stop straying, and the mind must stop its trembling.

You do not recite the holy name of Palani, nor bow your head to the feet of those who do; you do not say ‘Muruga’, nor give without tiring, nor sob and dance as supreme bliss takes hold. O heart, what refuge do we have now?

What wrong did I do to Brahma, who never errs? O valiant Kumara of southern Tiruttani, who hurled your spear at the mountain! He chose to give me a head that does not wear your anklet-bound feet, eyes that do not seek them, hands that do not worship, and a tongue that does not sing.

O heart, instead of longing for fish-eyed women, sighing and swooning with desire, look to the flower feet of him who drew his spear that day so that the marriage thread round the neck of Indra’s wife, whose elephant stands like a silver mountain, was not taken away.

The child who was not satisfied with the milk of his six star-mothers and drank Uma’s milk: the dagger at his waist, the small sword and the spear in his hand are always in my mind. Don’t come near, Death, keep away: if you come, he will take your life!

When the lord who wears flower anklets on his small feet rode out on his peacock steed to free the gods imprisoned throughout the cosmos, Sura’s army broke; and when he drew and sent forth his matchless spear, the eight mountains made way.

O yogis, who fix your gaze on the nose, kindle the breath from the root centre up to the crown, drive it inward and hold it from wandering: if you set your mind on the feet of the lord of the forest hill-maiden, entering the home of liberation is very easy.

Lift up this wicked man of ruined character, who keeps company with people who don’t know how to bow and praise. O pure one, who wielded your mighty spear so crows and vultures fought over the slain, ghouls danced in delight and the demons’ mouths spewed flesh!

Brahma of the lotus wrote my fate on his palm leaf. Does he not know that he himself once had fetters put on his feet? If our king, who comes with his matchless spear so the surging sea roars and his golden anklets ring, comes to know of it, the four-faced god will be in chains twice over!

To go and see and worship Vishnu’s nephew, son of the dancer in the hall, the god above the gods, the deity of true wisdom, the lord of Tiruchengode with its fish-filled fields and groves: why did four-faced Brahma not give me four thousand eyes?

It is truly good to praise him: nephew of dark Vishnu; the noble one who secretly carried off Valli, daughter of the red deer; who holds the rooster in his hand; the war spear-bearer who destroyed Sura, the great warring mango tree, to save heaven; the lord of Tiruchengode, rich in young areca palms and trees.

Grant me your anklet-bound lotus feet, the pure wisdom that devotees find, draw up and drink. O guardian who wielded your spear so the gods would not flee in terror when fierce, cruel Sura seized the worlds and the heavens of the gods and pressed upon them!

The sound of the right-whorled conch of Vishnu, from whose navel the fragrant world came, was heard only in the sky-scented groves and ponds; but the ring of the bells at the holy waist of the child who took up his spear and played so the mighty mountain shattered was heard in all fourteen worlds.

The truth does not appear to anyone until both words, ‘I’ and ‘he’, are gone. Through the teaching of Murugan, the compassionate nephew of Vishnu, who as a boar dug up the ancient earth, one comes to meet that lone open space where there is not even a witness.

When the splendid peacock of the lord of Tiruchengode hill, whose fields shine with fish, danced and struck the hooded heads of Adisesha, they shook and shook; and at its feet lay heaps of rubies, and Vishnu, protector of the earth, with his discus and his conch.

I see no way to salvation at all, O Kandan, Muruga of the spear. Grieving again and again at the fate that left me struggling with this bundle wrapped in sinews, in a false life that runs on like a river, my mind burns here.

Unite me with your feet, lovely as blue lilies and lotuses, and protect me, O rider of the noble feathered peacock! With no support, like a lone vine with no stake to climb, the lonely mind of this sinner staggers, withers and trembles.

How wondrous that, out of love, he joined me, who never thought of giving and had no wisdom, with his unfailing devotees! Through the spear-bearer who destroyed Krauncha mountain, I am freed from the prison of birth, and the fetters of attachment and karma have fallen away.

Those who learn and understand even one verse among the hundred in Kandan’s good book, the Alangaram, do not fear angry kings or a fight with Yama; they do not go near the dark pit of hell, are not touched by cruel disease, and are not shaken by tigers, bears or elephants.

His holy feet, anklets and bells, the sharp war spear that pierced the mountain, the kadamba garland, the twelve broad shoulders, the six lovely faces and flower eyes came in the form of the guru and leapt into my heart, cooling it.

Show me the place beyond night and day, and grant me your feet adorned with kura flowers and anklets, so I may stay there and praise you. O mighty spear-bearer, praised by Vishnu, who, the day the elephant cried out, killed the crocodile and stood as the elephant worshipped him; O terrifying destroyer of the demons!

Wherever I think of him as Kumaran of Tiruchengode, where lotus blossoms shed pollen and pearls, there he comes and stands before me, with his red, fierce, sharp spear, his holy faces and his twelve fine shoulders in a row.

Though I know danger is coming to my soul, I never think, ‘When shall I worship your gracious feet?’ End my karma and bless me, O lord of the rooster flag who lives on the great hill of Tiruttani, ringed by ponds and wide fields; O crest-jewel of the gods!

End the suffering of my heart, which writhes like an ant on a burning stick. O warrior who dwells at Tiruchendur, where the sea sifts and washes up a crore of pearls; O you who were destined for Valli; O jewel who rides the peacock!

I will never fear Death, who comes after me with his trident, whirling his noose. We have a true companion: the spear and holy hand of the six-faced Kumaran, son of the lord who drank the poison that rose from the sea.
