On the night of the Dol full moon the sky is clear, and a gentle southern breeze is softly blowing.
दोल पूर्णिमा की रात आकाश निर्मल है, और मलय की मंद-मंद हवा बह रही है।

লক্ষ্মীদেবী বামে করি বসি নারায়ণ।
কহিতেছে নানা কথা সুখে আলাপন॥Lokkhidebi bame kori boshi Narayon. Kohitechhe nana kotha sukhe alapon.
Narayana sits with Goddess Lakshmi at his left, happily talking of many things.
नारायण लक्ष्मी देवी को अपने बाईं ओर बिठाकर बैठे हैं और सुख से तरह-तरह की बातें कर रहे हैं।

হেনকালে বীণাযন্ত্রে হরি গুণগান।
উপনীত হইলেন নারদ ধীমান॥Henokale binajontre Hori gungan. Uponito hoilen Narod dhiman.
Just then the wise Narada arrived, singing Hari’s praises on his vina.
उसी समय वीणा पर हरि के गुण गाते हुए बुद्धिमान नारद वहाँ आ पहुँचे।

ধীরে ধীরে উভপদে করিয়া প্রণতি।
অতঃপর কহিলেন লক্ষ্মীদেবী প্রতি॥Dhire dhire ubhopode koriya pronoti. Otopor kohilen Lokkhidebi proti.
He slowly bowed at the feet of both, and then spoke to Goddess Lakshmi.
उन्होंने धीरे-धीरे दोनों के चरणों में प्रणाम किया और फिर लक्ष्मी देवी से बोले।

শুন গো, মা নারায়ণি, চলো মর্ত্যপুরে।
তব আচরণে দুখ পাইনু অন্তরে॥Shuno go, Ma Narayoni, cholo mortopure. Tobo achorone dukh painu ontore.
Listen, Mother Narayani, come down to the mortal world. Your ways there have pained my heart.
सुनो माँ नारायणी, धरती लोक चलो। तुम्हारे आचरण से मेरे मन को बड़ा दुख हुआ है।

তব কৃপা বঞ্চিত হইয়া নরনারী।
ভুঞ্জিছে দুর্গতি কত বর্ণিবারে নারি॥Tobo kripa bonchito hoiya nornari. Bhunjichhe durgoti koto bornibare nari.
Deprived of your grace, men and women suffer more misery than I can describe.
तुम्हारी कृपा से वंचित होकर नर-नारी इतनी दुर्दशा भोग रहे हैं कि मैं वर्णन नहीं कर सकता।

সতত কুকর্মে রত রহিয়া তাহারা।
দুর্ভিক্ষ অকালমৃত্যু রোগে শোকে সারা॥Shototo kukorme roto rohiya tahara. Durbhikkho okalmrityu roge shoke shara.
Always caught up in wrongdoing, they are worn down by famine, early death, disease and grief.
वे सदा बुरे कर्मों में लगे रहते हैं, और अकाल, असमय मृत्यु, रोग और शोक से टूट चुके हैं।

অন্নাভাবে শীর্ণকায় রোগে মৃতপ্রায়।
আত্মহত্যা কেহ বা করিছে ঠেকে দায়॥Onnabhabe shirnokay roge mritoprai. Attohotya keho ba korichhe theke day.
Wasted for want of food and half dead with illness, some are even driven to take their own lives.
अन्न के अभाव में शरीर सूख गए हैं, रोग से लोग अधमरे हैं, और कुछ मजबूरी में आत्महत्या तक कर रहे हैं।

কেহ কেহ প্রাণাধিক পুত্রকন্যা সবে।
বেচে খায় হায় হায় অন্নের অভাবে॥Keho keho pranadhik putrokonya shobe. Beche khay hay hay onner obhabe.
Alas, some even sell the sons and daughters dearer than life, just to eat.
हाय, कुछ लोग अन्न के अभाव में प्राणों से प्यारे बेटे-बेटियों को भी बेचकर पेट भर रहे हैं।

অন্নপূর্ণা অন্নরূপা ত্রিলোকজননী।
বল দেবি, তবু কেন হাহাকার শুনি॥Onnopurna onnorupa trilokjononi. Bolo Debi, tobu keno hahakar shuni.
You are Annapurna, food itself, mother of the three worlds. Tell me, Goddess, why then do I hear such cries of despair?
तुम अन्नपूर्णा हो, स्वयं अन्नरूपा, तीनों लोकों की माता। बताओ देवी, फिर भी यह हाहाकार क्यों सुनाई देता है?

কেন লোকে লক্ষ্মীহীন সম্পদ অভাবে।
কেন লোকে লক্ষ্মীছাড়া কুকর্ম প্রভাবে॥Keno loke Lokkhihin shompod obhabe. Keno loke Lokkhichhara kukormo probhabe.
Why are people without Lakshmi, lacking wealth? Why are they forsaken by her, under the sway of wrongdoing?
लोग लक्ष्मी-हीन होकर धन के अभाव में क्यों हैं? बुरे कर्मों के प्रभाव से वे लक्ष्मी से क्यों बिछड़ गए हैं?

শুনিয়া নারদবাক্য লক্ষ্মী ঠাকুরানি।
সঘনে নিঃশ্বাস ত্যজি কহে মৃদুবাণী॥Shuniya Narodbakko Lokkhi Thakurani. Shoghone nishshash tyoji kohe mridubani.
Hearing Narada’s words, Lakshmi sighed deeply and spoke gently.
नारद की बात सुनकर लक्ष्मी ठकुरानी ने गहरी साँस ली और कोमल वाणी में बोलीं।

সত্য বাছা, ইহা বড় দুঃখের বিষয়।
কারণ ইহার যাহা শোনো সমুদয়॥Shotto bachha, iha boro dukkher bishoy. Karon ihar jaha shono shomudoy.
It is true, my child, and it is very sad. Hear the whole reason for it.
सच है बेटा, यह बड़े दुख की बात है। इसका जो कारण है, वह सब सुनो।

আমি লক্ষ্মী কারো তরে নাহি করি রোষ।
মর্ত্যবাসী কষ্ট পায় ভুঞ্জি কর্মদোষ॥Ami Lokkhi karo tore nahi kori rosh. Mortobashi koshto pay bhunji kormodosh.
I, Lakshmi, am angry with no one. The people of the earth suffer the fruits of their own misdeeds.
मैं लक्ष्मी किसी पर क्रोध नहीं करती। धरती के लोग अपने ही कर्मों के दोष का फल भोगकर कष्ट पाते हैं।

মজাইলে অনাচারে সমস্ত সংসার।
কেমনে থাকিব আমি বল নির্বিকার॥Mojaile onachare shomosto shongshar. Kemone thakibo ami bolo nirbikar.
When the whole world has sunk into wrong living, tell me, how can I stay unmoved?
जब सारा संसार अनाचार में डूब गया है, तो बताओ, मैं कैसे निर्विकार रह सकती हूँ?

কামক্রোধ লোভ মোহ মদ অহংকার।
আলস্য কলহ মিথ্যা ঘিরিছে সংসার॥Kamkrodh lobh moh mod ohongkar. Aloshyo koloho mittha ghirichhe shongshar.
Lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, ego, sloth, quarrels and lies have surrounded the world.
काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह, मद, अहंकार, आलस्य, कलह और झूठ ने संसार को घेर लिया है।

তাহাতে হইয়া আমি ঘোর জ্বালাতন।
হয়েছি চঞ্চলা তাই ওহে বাছাধন॥Tahate hoiya ami ghor jalaton. Hoyechhi chonchola tai ohe bachhadhon.
Sorely troubled by all this, my dear child, I have become restless and do not stay.
इन सबसे मैं बहुत परेशान हूँ, इसलिए हे प्यारे बेटे, मैं चंचला हो गई हूँ, कहीं टिकती नहीं।

পরিপূর্ণ হিংসা দ্বেষ তাদের হৃদয়।
পরশ্রী হেরিয়া চিত্ত কলুষিত ময়॥Poripurno hingsha dvesh tader hridoy. Poroshri heriya chitto kolushito moy.
Their hearts are full of envy and hatred, and seeing others prosper fills their minds with malice.
उनके हृदय ईर्ष्या और द्वेष से भरे हैं; दूसरों की समृद्धि देखकर उनका मन कलुषित हो जाता है।

রসনার তৃপ্তি হেতু অখাদ্য ভক্ষণ।
ফল তার হের ঋষি অকাল মরণ॥Roshonar tripti hetu okhaddo bhokkhon. Phol tar hero rishi okal moron.
They eat what should not be eaten just to please the tongue, and the result, O sage, is untimely death.
जीभ के स्वाद के लिए वे अखाद्य खाते हैं; हे ऋषि, देखो, उसका फल असमय मृत्यु है।

ঘরে ঘরে চলিয়াছে এই অবিচার।
অচলা হইয়া রব কোন সে প্রকার॥Ghore ghore choliyachhe ei obichar. Ochola hoiya robo kon she prokar.
This wrongdoing goes on in house after house. How can I possibly stay there steadily?
घर-घर में यह अन्याय चल रहा है। ऐसे में मैं किस प्रकार अचल होकर रहूँ?

এসব ছাড়িয়া যেবা করে সদাচার।
তার গৃহে চিরদিন বসতি আমার॥Eshob chhariya jeba kore shodachar. Tar grihe chirodin boshoti amar.
Whoever gives all this up and lives rightly, in their home I dwell forever.
जो यह सब छोड़कर सदाचार करता है, उसके घर में मेरा सदा निवास रहता है।

এত শুনি ঋষিবর বলে, নারায়ণি।
অনাথের মাতা তুমি বিঘ্নবিনাশিনী॥Eto shuni rishibor bole, Narayoni. Onather mata tumi bighnobinashini.
Hearing this, the great sage said: Narayani, you are mother of the helpless and remover of obstacles.
यह सुनकर श्रेष्ठ ऋषि बोले: हे नारायणी, तुम अनाथों की माता और विघ्नों का नाश करने वाली हो।

কিবা ভাবে পাবে সবে তোমা পদছায়া।
তুমি না রাখিলে ভক্তে কে করিবে দয়া॥Kiba bhabe pabe shobe toma podochhaya. Tumi na rakhile bhokte ke koribe doya.
How can everyone find the shelter of your feet? If you do not protect your devotees, who will show them mercy?
सब लोग तुम्हारे चरणों की छाया कैसे पाएँगे? तुम भक्तों की रक्षा न करो तो उन पर कौन दया करेगा?

বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া পদ্মাসনা ত্রিতাপহারিণী।
চঞ্চলা অচলা হও পাপনিবারণী॥Bishnupriya Podmashona tritaphorini. Chonchola ochola hou papnibaroni.
Beloved of Vishnu, seated on the lotus, remover of the three kinds of suffering, you who end sin: restless one, become steady.
हे विष्णुप्रिया, कमल पर विराजने वाली, तीनों तापों को हरने वाली और पापों का निवारण करने वाली, हे चंचला, अब अचल हो जाओ।

তোমার পদেতে মা মোর এ মিনতি।
দুখ নাশিবার তব আছে গো শকতি॥Tomar podete ma mor e minoti. Dukh nashibar tobo achhe go shokoti.
Mother, this is my plea at your feet: you have the power to end this sorrow.
माँ, तुम्हारे चरणों में मेरी यही विनती है; दुख मिटाने की शक्ति तुम्हारे पास है।

কহ দেবি দয়া করে ইহার বিধান।
দুর্গতি হেরিয়া সব কাঁদে মোর প্রাণ॥Koho Debi doya kore ihar bidhan. Durgoti heriya shob kande mor pran.
Kindly tell me, Goddess, the remedy for this. Seeing all this misery, my heart weeps.
देवी, दया करके इसका उपाय बताओ। यह दुर्दशा देखकर मेरा मन रोता है।

দেবর্ষির বাক্য শুনি কমলা উতলা।
তাহারে আশ্বাস দানে বিদায় করিলা॥Deborshir bakko shuni Komola utola. Tahare ashshash dane biday korila.
Hearing the divine sage, Kamala (Lakshmi) was deeply moved; she reassured him and sent him on his way.
देवर्षि की बात सुनकर कमला (लक्ष्मी) व्याकुल हो उठीं; उन्होंने उन्हें आश्वासन देकर विदा किया।

জীবের দুঃখ হেরি কাঁদে মাতৃপ্রাণ।
আমি আশু করিব গো ইহার বিধান॥Jiber dukkho heri kande matripran. Ami ashu koribo go ihar bidhan.
Her mother’s heart wept at the suffering of living beings: I will soon set this right, she said.
जीवों का दुख देखकर माँ का हृदय रो पड़ा: मैं शीघ्र ही इसका उपाय करूँगी।

নারদ চলিয়া গেলে দেবী ভাবে মনে।
এত দুঃখ এত তাপ ঘুচাব কেমনে॥Narod choliya gele Debi bhabe mone. Eto dukkho eto tap ghuchabo kemone.
When Narada had gone, the Goddess wondered: how shall I end so much sorrow and pain?
नारद के जाने पर देवी मन में सोचने लगीं: इतना दुख, इतना ताप मैं कैसे दूर करूँ?

তুমি মোরে উপদেশ দাও নারায়ণ।
যাহাতে নরের হয় দুঃখ বিমোচন॥Tumi more upodesh dao Narayon. Jahate norer hoy dukkho bimochon.
Narayana, advise me how people may be freed from their sorrow.
हे नारायण, मुझे उपाय बताइए जिससे मनुष्यों का दुख दूर हो।

লক্ষ্মীবাণী শুনি প্রভু কহেন উত্তর।
ব্যথিত কি হেতু প্রিয়া বিকল অন্তর॥Lokkhibani shuni Probhu kohen uttor. Byathito ki hetu priya bikol ontor.
Hearing Lakshmi, the Lord replied: Why are you so pained, my beloved, so troubled at heart?
लक्ष्मी की बात सुनकर प्रभु ने उत्तर दिया: प्रिये, तुम क्यों दुखी हो, तुम्हारा मन क्यों व्याकुल है?

যাহা বলি, শুন সতি, বচন আমার।
মর্ত্যলোকে লক্ষ্মীব্রত করহ প্রচার॥Jaha boli, shuno Shoti, bochon amar. Mortoloke Lokkhibroto koroho prochar.
Listen to what I say, my faithful one: spread the Lakshmi vrata, the vow of Lakshmi, in the mortal world.
हे सती, मेरी बात सुनो: धरती लोक में लक्ष्मी-व्रत का प्रचार करो।

গুরুবারে সন্ধ্যাকালে যত নারীগণ।
পূজা করি ব্রতকথা করিবে শ্রবণ॥Gurubare shondhyakale joto narigon. Puja kori brotokotha koribe shrobon.
On Thursday evenings the women will worship and listen to the story of the vow.
गुरुवार की संध्या को सब स्त्रियाँ पूजा करके व्रत-कथा सुनेंगी।

ধন ধান্য যশ মান বাড়িবে সবার।
অশান্তি ঘুচিয়া হবে সুখের সংসার॥Dhon dhanyo josh man baribe shobar. Oshanti ghuchiya hobe sukher shongshar.
Everyone’s wealth, grain, fame and honour will grow; strife will end and homes will be happy.
सबका धन, धान्य, यश और मान बढ़ेगा; अशांति मिटकर घर-संसार सुखी होगा।

নারায়ণ বাক্যে লক্ষ্মী হরষ মনেতে।
ব্রত প্রচারণে যান ত্বরিত মর্তেতে॥Narayon bakke Lokkhi horosh monete. Broto prochorone jan torito mortete.
Glad at Narayana’s words, Lakshmi went quickly to earth to spread the vow.
नारायण की बात से प्रसन्न होकर लक्ष्मी व्रत का प्रचार करने तुरंत धरती पर गईं।

উপনীত হন দেবী অবন্তী নগরে।
তথায় হেরেন যাহা স্তম্ভিত অন্তরে॥Uponito hon Debi Obonti nogore. Tothay heren jaha stombhito ontore.
The Goddess arrived in the city of Avanti, and what she saw there left her stunned.
देवी अवंती नगर पहुँचीं, और वहाँ जो देखा उससे वे स्तब्ध रह गईं।

ধনেশ্বর রায় হয় নগর প্রধান।
অতুল ঐশ্বর্য তার কুবের সমান॥Dhoneshshor Ray hoy nogor prodhan. Otul oishshorjo tar Kuber shoman.
Dhaneshwar Ray was the chief man of the city, with matchless wealth like that of Kubera.
धनेश्वर राय नगर के प्रधान थे; उनका अपार ऐश्वर्य कुबेर के समान था।

হিংসা দ্বেষ বিজারিত সোনার সংসার।
নির্বিচারে পালিয়াছে পুত্র পরিবার॥Hingsha dvesh bijarito shonar shongshar. Nirbichare paliyachhe putro poribar.
His was a golden household, kept free of envy and hatred, and he cared for his sons and family without favour.
उनका सोने जैसा घर-संसार ईर्ष्या-द्वेष से दूर था; उन्होंने बेटों और परिवार को बिना भेदभाव पाला।

একান্নতে সপ্তপুত্র রাখি ধনেশ্বর।
অবসান নরজন্ম যান লোকান্তর॥Ekannote shoptoputro rakhi Dhoneshshor. Obosan norjonmo jan lokantor.
Keeping his seven sons together in one household, Dhaneshwar reached the end of his life and passed on.
सातों बेटों को एक ही चूल्हे पर (संयुक्त परिवार में) रखकर धनेश्वर का जीवन पूरा हुआ और वे परलोक चले गए।

পৃথগন্ন হল সবে অল্প দিন পর॥Potnir kuchokre pori shopto shohodor. Prithogonno holo shobe olpo din por.
Falling prey to their wives’ scheming, the seven brothers soon split up and set up separate kitchens.
पत्नियों के कुचक्र में पड़कर सातों भाई कुछ ही दिनों में अलग-अलग चूल्हे वाले हो गए।

হিংসা দ্বেষ লক্ষ্মী ত্যাজে যত কিছু হয়।
একে একে আসি সবে গৃহে প্রবেশয়॥Hingsha dvesh Lokkhi tyaje joto kichhu hoy. Eke eke ashi shobe grihe probeshoy.
Envy, hatred and everything Lakshmi shuns came one by one and entered that house.
ईर्ष्या, द्वेष और जो कुछ लक्ष्मी को अप्रिय है, वह सब एक-एक करके उस घर में घुस आया।

এসব দেখিয়া লক্ষ্মী অতি ক্রুদ্ধা হল।
অবিলম্বে সেই গৃহ ত্যজিয়া চলিল॥Eshob dekhiya Lokkhi oti kruddha holo. Obilombe shei griho tyojiya cholilo.
Seeing this, Lakshmi grew very angry and at once left that house.
यह सब देखकर लक्ष्मी बहुत क्रोधित हुईं और तुरंत वह घर छोड़कर चली गईं।

বৃদ্ধ রানি মরে হায় নিজ কর্মদোষে।
পুরীতে তিষ্ঠিতে নারে বধূদের রোষে॥Briddho rani more hay nijo kormodoshe. Purite tishthite nare bodhuder roshe.
Alas, the old queen suffered for her own faults; she could not stay in the house because of her daughters-in-law’s anger.
हाय, बूढ़ी रानी अपने ही कर्मदोष से दुखी हुई; बहुओं के क्रोध के कारण वह घर में टिक न सकी।

পরান ত্যজিতে যান নিবিড় কাননে।
চলিতে অশক্ত বৃদ্ধা অশ্রু দুনয়নে॥Poran tyojite jan nibir kanone. Cholite oshokto briddha oshru dunoyone.
She went into the deep forest to end her life, barely able to walk, tears in both eyes.
वह प्राण त्यागने घने जंगल में गई; बूढ़ी चल भी नहीं पा रही थी, दोनों आँखों में आँसू थे।

ছদ্মবেশে লক্ষ্মীদেবী আসি হেন কালে।
উপনীত হইলেন সে ঘোর জঙ্গলে॥Chhodmobeshe Lokkhidebi ashi heno kale. Uponito hoilen she ghor jongole.
Just then Goddess Lakshmi, in disguise, arrived in that dense forest.
उसी समय लक्ष्मी देवी वेश बदलकर उस घने जंगल में आ पहुँचीं।

সদয় কমলা তবে জিজ্ঞাসে বৃদ্ধারে।
কিবা হেতু উপনীত এ ঘোর কান্তারে॥Shodoy Komola tobe jiggashe briddhare. Kiba hetu uponito e ghor kantare.
Kind Kamala asked the old woman why she had come into this fearful wilderness.
दयालु कमला ने बूढ़ी से पूछा कि वह इस भयानक जंगल में क्यों आई है।

লক্ষ্মীবাক্যে বৃদ্ধা কহে শোন ওগো মাতা।
মন্দভাগ্য পতিহীনা করেছে বিধাতা॥Lokkhibakke briddha kohe shono ogo mata. Mondobhaggo potihina korechhe bidhata.
The old woman answered: Listen, mother, fate has made me unlucky and a widow.
लक्ष्मी की बात पर बूढ़ी बोली: सुनो माँ, विधाता ने मुझे अभागी और विधवा बना दिया है।

ধনবান ছিল পিতা মোর পতি আর।
লক্ষ্মী বাঁধা অঙ্গনেতে সতত আমার॥Dhonoban chhilo pita mor poti ar. Lokkhi bandha onganete shototo amar.
My father and my husband were both rich; Lakshmi was always held fast in my courtyard.
मेरे पिता और पति दोनों धनवान थे; लक्ष्मी सदा मेरे आँगन में बँधी रहती थीं।

সোনার সংসার মোর ছিল চারিভিতে।
পুত্র পুত্রবধূ ছিল আমারে সেবিতে॥Shonar shongshar mor chhilo charibhite. Putro putrobodhu chhilo amare shebite.
I had a golden household all around me, with sons and daughters-in-law to care for me.
चारों ओर मेरा सोने जैसा घर-संसार था; मेरी सेवा के लिए बेटे और बहुएँ थीं।

পতি হল স্বর্গবাসী সুখৈশ্বর্য যত।
একে একে যাহা কিছু হল তিরোহিত॥Poti holo shorgobashi sukhoishshorjo joto. Eke eke jaha kichhu holo tirohito.
My husband went to heaven, and one by one all our happiness and wealth vanished.
पति स्वर्ग सिधार गए, और सारा सुख-ऐश्वर्य एक-एक करके लुप्त हो गया।

ভিন্ন ভিন্ন হাঁড়ি সব হয়েছে এখন।
অবিরত বধূ যত করে জ্বালাতন॥Bhinno bhinno hanri shob hoyechhe ekhon. Obiroto bodhu joto kore jalaton.
Now everyone cooks in separate pots, and my daughters-in-law torment me constantly.
अब सबकी हाँडियाँ (चूल्हे) अलग-अलग हो गई हैं, और बहुएँ लगातार मुझे सताती हैं।

অসহ্য হয়েছে এবে তাদের যন্ত্রণা।
এ জীবন বিসর্জিতে করেছি বাসনা॥Oshojjo hoyechhe ebe tader jontrona. E jibon bishorjite korechhi bashona.
Their cruelty has become unbearable, so I have decided to give up this life.
अब उनकी यातना असहनीय हो गई है, इसलिए मैंने यह जीवन त्यागने का निश्चय किया है।

বৃদ্ধা বাক্যে নারায়ণী কহেন তখন।
আত্মহত্যা মহাপাপ শাস্ত্রের বচন॥Briddha bakke Narayoni kohen tokhon. Attohotya mohapap shastrer bochon.
Hearing her, Narayani said: The scriptures say that taking one’s own life is a great sin.
बूढ़ी की बात सुनकर नारायणी बोलीं: शास्त्र कहते हैं कि आत्महत्या महापाप है।

ফিরে যাও ঘরে তুমি কর লক্ষ্মীব্রত।
সর্ব দুঃখ বিমোচিত পাবে সুখ যত॥Phire jao ghore tumi koro Lokkhibroto. Shorbo dukkho bimochito pabe sukh joto.
Go back home and keep the Lakshmi vow; all your sorrows will be removed and you will find every happiness.
घर लौट जाओ और लक्ष्मी-व्रत करो; सारे दुख दूर होंगे और तुम्हें हर सुख मिलेगा।

संयोग से एक दिन व्रत के समय बूढ़ी के घर एक स्त्री आई।

Hearing Lakshmi’s story, her heart filled with devotion and she vowed to keep the Lakshmi vow.

Her husband had leprosy and lived by begging; hoping for his cure, she worshipped Kamala.
उसका पति कोढ़ से पीड़ित था और भीख माँगकर खाता था; उसके ठीक होने की आशा में उसने कमला की पूजा की।

ভক্তিভরে এয়ো লয়ে যায় পূজিবারে।
কমলার বরে সব দুঃখ গেল দূরে॥Bhoktibhore eyo loye jay pujibare. Komolar bore shob dukkho gelo dure.
With devotion she went with the married women to worship, and by Kamala’s blessing all her sorrows went away.
भक्ति से वह सुहागिनों को साथ लेकर पूजा करने गई, और कमला के वरदान से सारे दुख दूर हो गए।

দৈবযোগে সেই দেশে উপনীত হন॥Shrinogorbashi ek bonik nondon. Doibojoge shei deshe uponito hon.
A merchant’s son from Srinagar happened by chance to arrive in that land.
श्रीनगर का रहने वाला एक व्यापारी का बेटा संयोग से उस देश में आ पहुँचा।

লক্ষ্মীপূজা হেরি কহে বণিক তনয়।
কহে, এ কি পূজা কর, কিবা ফল হয়॥Lokkhipuja heri kohe bonik tonoy. Kohe, e ki puja koro, kiba phol hoy.
Seeing the Lakshmi worship, the merchant’s son asked: What worship is this, and what does it bring?
लक्ष्मी-पूजा देखकर व्यापारी के बेटे ने पूछा: यह कौन-सी पूजा कर रही हो, इससे क्या फल मिलता है?

বণিকের কথা শুনি বলে নারীগণ।
লক্ষ্মীব্রত ইহা ইথে মানসপূরণ॥Boniker kotha shuni bole narigon. Lokkhibroto iha ithe manoshpuron.
Hearing him, the women said: This is the Lakshmi vow; through it, wishes are fulfilled.
व्यापारी की बात सुनकर स्त्रियाँ बोलीं: यह लक्ष्मी-व्रत है, इससे मनोकामना पूरी होती है।

ভক্তিভরে যেই নর লক্ষ্মীব্রত করে।
মনের আশা তার পুরিবে অচিরে॥Bhoktibhore jei nor Lokkhibroto kore. Moner asha tar puribe ochire.
Whoever keeps the Lakshmi vow with devotion will soon have their heart’s wish fulfilled.
जो व्यक्ति भक्ति से लक्ष्मी-व्रत करता है, उसकी मन की आशा शीघ्र पूरी होती है।

সদাগর এই শুনি বলে অহংকারে।
অভাগী জনেতে হায় পূজে হে উহারে॥Shodagor ei shuni bole ohongkare. Obhagi jonete hay puje he uhare.
Hearing this, the merchant said proudly: It is only the unlucky who worship her.
यह सुनकर सौदागर घमंड से बोला: अरे, उसे तो अभागे लोग ही पूजते हैं।

ধনজনসুখ যত সব আছে মোর।
ভোগেতে সদাই আমি রহি নিরন্তর॥Dhonjonsukh joto shob achhe mor. Bhogete shodai ami rohi nirontor.
I have all the wealth, people and comfort I need, and I am always enjoying them.
मेरे पास धन, जन और सुख सब कुछ है, और मैं सदा भोग में डूबा रहता हूँ।

ভাগ্যে না থাকিলে লক্ষ্মী দিবে কিবা ধন।
একথা বিশ্বাস কভু করি না এমন॥Bhagge na thakile Lokkhi dibe kiba dhon. Ekotha bishshash kobhu kori na emon.
If it is not in one’s fate, what wealth can Lakshmi give? I never believe such things.
भाग्य में न हो तो लक्ष्मी क्या धन देंगी? ऐसी बात पर मैं कभी विश्वास नहीं करता।

नारायणी ऐसी बात सह न सकीं; उसके अहंकार के दोष से देवी ने उसे त्याग दिया।

ডুবিল বাণিজ্যতরী সাগরের জলে॥Boibhobete purno tori banijjete gele. Dubilo banijjotori shagorer jole.
When his ships, laden with riches, set out to trade, they sank in the waters of the sea.
जब उसके धन से भरे जहाज़ व्यापार को निकले, तो वे समुद्र में डूब गए।

With a begging bag on his shoulder he went from door to door, wandering from land to land in the pangs of hunger.
कंधे पर भीख की झोली लिए वह द्वार-द्वार घूमने लगा, भूख की आग में देश-देशांतर भटकने लगा।

When Mother Lakshmi saw the merchant’s plight, compassionate Kamala forgot all his offences.
जब माँ लक्ष्मी ने व्यापारी की दशा देखी, तो करुणामयी कमला सब कुछ भूल गईं।

ভিক্ষায় পাঠান তারে অবন্তী নগরে॥Koushol koriya Debi dukkho ghuchabare. Bhikkhay pathan tare Obonti nogore.
To end his sorrow, the Goddess cleverly led him, still begging, to the city of Avanti.
उसका दुख मिटाने के लिए देवी ने युक्ति से उसे भीख माँगते हुए अवंती नगर भेज दिया।

বিপদ কারণ তার আসিল স্মরণে॥Heri shetha Lokkhibroto rota narigone. Bipod karon tar ashilo shorone.
Seeing the women there absorbed in the Lakshmi vow, he remembered the cause of his ruin.
वहाँ स्त्रियों को लक्ष्मी-व्रत में लगी देखकर उसे अपनी विपत्ति का कारण याद आ गया।

हाथ जोड़कर, एकाग्र मन से, व्यापारी के बेटे ने भक्तिपूर्वक लक्ष्मी की वंदना की।

Praising her like this with a devoted heart, the merchant fell to the ground and bowed there.
इस प्रकार भक्तिपूर्ण मन से स्तुति करके वह सौदागर वहीं धरती पर गिरकर प्रणाम करने लगा।

গৃহিণীরে গৃহে গিয়া আদ্যান্ত কহিল॥Broter manot kori nijo grihe gelo. Grihinire grihe giya addanto kohilo.
Vowing to keep the vow, he went home and told his wife everything from beginning to end.
व्रत की मन्नत मानकर वह अपने घर गया और पत्नी को शुरू से अंत तक सब बताया।

Hearing the merchant’s account, all the women of the house worshipped Lakshmi with devotion.
सौदागर की बात सुनकर घर की सब स्त्रियों ने भक्ति से लक्ष्मी की पूजा की।

Lakshmi became kind to him and once again turned her gracious gaze on the merchant.
लक्ष्मी उस पर दयालु हो गईं और फिर से सौदागर पर कृपा-दृष्टि डाली।

আনন্দেতে সকলের অন্তর পূরিল॥Shoptotori jol hote bhashiya uthilo. Anondete shokoler ontor purilo.
His seven ships rose up out of the water, and everyone’s heart filled with joy.
उसके सातों जहाज़ पानी से ऊपर तैर आए, और सबके मन आनंद से भर गए।
