Taralamadhukridvrinde vrindavanetha manohare pashupashishubhissakam vatsanupalanalolupah, haladharasakho deva shriman vicheritha dharayan gavalamuralivetram netrabhiramatanudyutih.
Then in lovely Vrindavan, alive with swarms of bees, eager to tend the calves with the cowherd boys and with Balarama as your friend, O glorious Lord, you roamed, carrying horn, flute and staff, your radiant body a joy to the eyes.

When you, the purifier, set in Vrindavan your two feet, which protect the world and are caressed by Lakshmi’s lotus hands, O Lord of Lakshmi, how could its trees, creepers, waters, land, hills and fields not shine, overflowing with plenty?

As you grazed the calves to the sweet sound of your flute, at the forest’s edge rich with grass and cooled by breezes, along the wide banks of the Yamuna and on the peaks of Govardhan, one day you saw a demon in the form of a calf.

Noting its wildly swishing tail, its dull look and its turned neck as it watched for a chance, you seized it by the feet, whirled it high again and again, and flung it lifeless onto a great tree.

As the great demon, wicked by nature, fell, crushing trees and forest with the force of his fall, the gods gathered in the sky joyfully rained heaps of flowers on your head, O Hari.

When the boys asked, Where are these fragrant flowers falling on your head from above?, you said playfully: Surely these are flowers flung up from the trees when the demon fell, now drifting slowly down.

One day, in fierce heat, you and the others went to drink the Yamuna’s water and saw the crane Baka, flapping its wings, like a second Kailasa forgotten when the mountains’ wings were cut.

As the cowherds drank, he rushed at you and swallowed you, but quickly spat you out, for you burned like fire, and came at you to tear you with his beak. Then, O Lord, skilled at splitting the wicked, you seized his beak and tore him apart.

As if to go and see his dead sister Putana, or to wait ahead for his brother Agha, Baka went to the abode of death; and as the gods showered flowers, you came home from Vrindavan.

Hearing your sweet flute from afar, the women hurried out and gazed at you with growing joy; you who delighted your mother and Nanda, O Shauri, famed as dwelling in Guruvayur, drive away my illnesses.
