सुखेर लागिया ए घर बान्धिनु

1. সুখের লাগিয়া এ ঘর বান্ধিনু, অনলে পুড়িয়া গেল।
   অমিয়া-সাগরে সিনান করিতে, সকলি গরল ভেল॥

   Sukher lagiya e ghor bandhinu, onole puriya gelo. Omiya-shagore shinan korite, shokoli goral bhelo.

   I built this house for happiness, and it burned down in the fire. I went to bathe in an ocean of nectar, and it all turned to poison.

   सुख के लिए मैंने यह घर बनाया, वह आग में जल गया। अमृत के सागर में नहाने गई, तो सब कुछ विष बन गया।

2. সখি হে, কি মোর করমে লেখি।
   শীতল বলিয়া ও চাঁদ সেবিনু, রবির কিরণ দেখি॥

   Shokhi he, ki mor korome lekhi. Shitol boliya o chand shebinu, robir kiron dekhi.

   Friend, what is written in my fate? I turned to that moon thinking it cool, and found the sun’s scorching rays.

   सखी, मेरे भाग्य में क्या लिखा है? उस चाँद को शीतल समझकर अपनाया, पर उसमें सूरज की तपती किरणें पाईं।

3. নিচল ছাড়িয়া উচলে উঠিতে, পড়িনু অগাধ জলে।
   লছিমী চাহিতে দারিদ্র্য বাঢ়ল, মাণিক হারানু হেলে॥

   Nichol chhariya uchole uthite, porinu ogadh jole. Lochhimi chahite daridro barhol, manik haranu hele.

   Leaving low ground to climb higher, I fell into deep water. Seeking Lakshmi’s wealth, my poverty only grew, and I carelessly lost my jewel.

   नीची जगह छोड़कर ऊँचे चढ़ना चाहा, तो गहरे पानी में गिर पड़ी। लक्ष्मी (समृद्धि) चाही तो दरिद्रता बढ़ गई, और लापरवाही में अपना माणिक खो बैठी।

4. পিয়াস লাগিয়া জলদ সেবিনু, বজর পড়িয়া গেল।
   জ্ঞানদাস কহে কানুর পিরীতি, মরণ-অধিক শেল॥

   Piyash lagiya jolod shebinu, bojor poriya gelo. Gyandash kohe Kanur piriti, moron-odhik shel.

   Thirsty, I turned to the rain cloud, and a thunderbolt fell. Gyandas says: love for Kanu, Krishna, is a spear that hurts more than death.

   प्यास बुझाने के लिए बादल की सेवा की, तो बिजली गिर पड़ी। ज्ञानदास कहते हैं: कान्हा का प्रेम मृत्यु से भी बढ़कर पीड़ा देने वाला भाला है।
