Neela thunga sthanagiri thatee suptham udhbodhya Krishnam, paaraarthyam svam sruthi satha siras siddham adhyaapayanthee, svochchishtaayaam sraji nigalitham yaa balaathkruthya bhunkthe, Godhaa thasyai nama idham idham bhooya evaastu bhooyah.
Goda woke Krishna as he slept on Neela’s breast, taught him what a hundred Upanishads establish, that he lives for those who love him, and claims him bound by the garland she wore first: to her, salutations, again and again.

Anna vayal Pudhuvai Aandaal Arangarkup, pannu Thiruppaavaip palpadhiyam innisaiyaal, paadik koduththaal narpaamaalai poomaalai, soodik koduththaalaich chollu.
Speak of Andal of Puduvai, with its swan-filled fields, who sang the many verses of Thiruppavai in sweet music and gave them to the Lord of Srirangam as a garland of song, and who wore the flower garland before she offered it.
Soodik koduththa sudarkkodiye tholpaavai, paadi arulavalla palvalaiyaai naadi nee, Vengadavarku ennai vidhi endra immaatram, naam kadavaa vannam nalgu.
Radiant maiden who wore the garland before offering it, you of many bangles who sang the ancient Pavai vow: grant that we never stray from your prayer, ‘Destine me for the Lord of Venkatam.’

Maargazhi thingal madhi niraindha nannaalaal, neeraadap podhuveer podhumino nerizhaiyeer, seer malgum aaippaadi selvach chirumeergaal, koorvel kodunthozhilan Nandhagopan kumaran, eraarndha kanni Yasodhai ilanjingam, kaarmenich chengan kadhir madhiyam pol mugaththaan, Naaraayanane namakke parai tharuvaan, paaror pugazhap padindhelor empaavaai.
It is Margazhi, a fine day of the full moon. Come, jewelled girls of the thriving cowherd village who wish to bathe! Narayana himself, son of fierce Nandagopa with his sharp spear, young lion of lovely-eyed Yashoda, dark as a rain cloud, red-eyed, his face like the sun and moon, will grant us our drum. Let us bathe so the world praises us: this is our vow.

You who live in this world, hear what we do for our vow: we sing the feet of the Supreme who sleeps gently on the ocean of milk; we take no ghee and no milk; we bathe at dawn; we line our eyes with no kohl and put no flowers in our hair; we do nothing improper and spread no evil gossip; we give alms and charity as much as we can, and rejoice, thinking of how to be saved. This is our vow.

If we sing the name of the noble one who grew tall and measured the worlds, and bathe for our vow, the whole land will be free of harm, with three rains every month; fish will leap among the tall red paddy, spotted bees will doze in the blue lilies, and great generous cows will fill pot after pot as soon as their udders are held. Wealth that never leaves will abound. This is our vow.

O lord of the rain, hold nothing back: enter the ocean, draw up its water and rise roaring; turn dark like the form of the Primal Lord; flash like the discus in the hand of mighty-shouldered Padmanabha, thunder like his conch, and pour without pause like the shower of arrows from his Sharnga bow, so the world may thrive and we may bathe with joy in Margazhi. This is our vow.

The wondrous Lord, prince of everlasting North Mathura, lord of the shores of the pure, deep Yamuna, bright lamp born in the cowherd clan, Damodara who brought glory to his mother: if we come pure, strew fresh flowers, bow, sing with our lips and think of him in our hearts, our past sins and those yet to come will burn away like cotton in fire. Sing his names: this is our vow.

The birds are chirping. Don’t you hear the great call of the white conch at the temple of the lord of Garuda? Wake up, girl! The sages and yogis, holding in their hearts the seed of all things, who drank the poison from the demoness’s breast, kicked the deceitful cart to pieces and sleeps on the serpent in the waters, rise slowly and cry ‘Hari!’, and that great sound has entered our hearts and cooled them. This is our vow.

Silly girl, don’t you hear the blackbirds chattering ‘keesu keesu’ everywhere? Don’t you hear the curd being churned by the fragrant-haired cowherd women, their necklaces jingling as their arms move? Leader among girls, will you just lie there listening while we sing of Narayana, of Keshava? Radiant one, open the door: this is our vow.

The eastern sky is turning white and the buffaloes have spread out to graze. We have held back the other girls who were setting off, and come to call you. Eager girl, get up! If we go and worship the God of gods, who split the horse-demon’s mouth and killed the wrestlers, and sing to win our drum, he will look into our needs, cry ‘Ah!’ and bless us. This is our vow.

Cousin, sleeping on a soft bed in a mansion of flawless gems, with lamps burning all round and incense fragrant, unbolt your jewelled door! Aunt, won’t you wake her? Is your daughter mute, or deaf, or just drowsy? Has some spell cast her into deep sleep? We keep chanting his many names: the great wonder, Madhava, Lord of Vaikuntha. This is our vow.

Lady who will reach heaven by your penance, even if you won’t open the door, won’t you answer? Narayana, with fragrant tulsi on his crown, the holy one who grants our drum when we praise him, once sent Kumbhakarna into the jaws of death: did Kumbhakarna lose to you and hand you his great sleep? Deeply drowsy jewel, wake fully and open the door. This is our vow.

All your friends and kin have filled your courtyard, singing the name of the cloud-coloured Lord, yet you neither stir nor speak, dear rich girl. Why do you sleep? This is our vow.

Sister of the good, rich cowherd whose house turns to mud as buffaloes, thinking of their calves, low and let milk stream from their udders: with dew falling on our heads we cling to your doorway and sing of the Lord dear to our hearts, who in his anger slew the king of southern Lanka, yet you won’t even open your mouth. Get up now! What a sleep this is! The whole household knows. This is our vow.

Singing the glory of him who tore open the bird-demon’s beak and plucked off the heads of the wicked Ravana, all the girls have reached the place of the vow. Venus has risen and Jupiter has set; the birds are chirping. Girl with eyes like flowers, will you lie in bed on this good day instead of plunging into the icy water? Drop the pretence and join us. This is our vow.

Lady who boasted you would wake us first, shameless one with the ready tongue, get up! Let us sing of the lotus-eyed Lord whose broad hands hold the conch and discus. This is our vow.

Come sing of the wondrous Lord who killed the mighty elephant and can crush the strength of foes.’ This is our vow.

This is our vow.

This is how the bright-jewelled, moon-faced girls went to Madhava, Keshava, who churned the ship-filled ocean, worshipped him and won their drum. Kodai, daughter of Bhattarbiran of beautiful Puduvai, who wears a cool garland of fresh lotuses, told it in these thirty verses of classical Tamil. Those who recite them here without fail will receive grace everywhere from the glorious Tirumal, with his four mountain-like shoulders and red-eyed holy face, and live in joy.
