தே³வ்யா꞉ கவசம்

ௐ அஸ்ய ஶ்ரீசண்டீ³கவசஸ்ய ப்ர³ஹ்மா ருʼஷி꞉, அநுஷ்டுப் ச²ந்த³꞉, சாமுண்டா³ தே³வதா, அங்க³ந்யாஸோக்தமாதரோ பீ³ஜம், தி³க்³ப³ந்த⁴தே³வதாஸ்தத்த்வம், ஶ்ரீஜக³த³ம்பா³ப்ரீத்யர்தே² ஸப்தஶதீபாடா²ங்க³த்வேந ஜபே விநியோக³꞉।
ௐ நமஶ்சண்டி³காயை॥Om asya shrichandikavachasya brahma rishih, anushtup chhandah, chamunda devata, anganyasoktamataro bijam, digbandhadevatastattvam, shrijagadambaprityarthe saptashatipathangatvena jape viniyogah, om namashchandikayai.
Om. Of this Chandi Kavacham, the armour of the Goddess: the seer is Brahma, the metre anushtup, the deity Chamunda; the mothers named in the limb-touching rite are its seed, the guardian goddesses of the directions its essence. It is recited as part of the Saptashati, to please the Mother of the world. Om, salutations to Chandika.
ௐ யத்³கு³ஹ்யம்ʼ பரமம்ʼ லோகே ஸர்வரக்ஷாகரம்ʼ ந்ருʼணாம்।
யந்ந கஸ்யசிதா³க்²யாதம்ʼ தந்மே ப்ரூ³ஹி பிதாமஹ॥Om yadguhyam paramam loke sarvarakshakaram nrinam, yanna kasyachidakhyatam tanme bruhi pitamaha.
Om. Grandfather Brahma, tell me the supreme secret of this world that protects people in every way, which you have never told anyone.
அஸ்தி கு³ஹ்யதமம்ʼ விப்ர ஸர்வபூ⁴தோபகாரகம்।
தே³வ்யாஸ்து கவசம்ʼ புண்யம்ʼ தச்ச்ருʼ²ணுஷ்வ மஹாமுநே॥Asti guhyatamam vipra sarvabhutopakarakam, devyastu kavacham punyam tachchhrinushva mahamune.
There is, O brahmin, a most secret, holy armour of the Goddess that helps all beings. Listen to it, great sage.
ப்ரத²மம்ʼ ஶைலபுத்ரீ ச த்³விதீயம்ʼ ப்ர³ஹ்மசாரிணீ।
த்ருʼதீயம்ʼ சந்த்ர³க⁴ண்டேதி கூஷ்மாண்டே³தி சதுர்த²கம்॥Prathamam shailaputri cha dvitiyam brahmacharini, tritiyam chandraghanteti kushmandeti chaturthakam.
First is Shailaputri, daughter of the mountain; second Brahmacharini, the ascetic; third Chandraghanta, with the crescent-moon bell; fourth Kushmanda.
பஞ்சமம்ʼ ஸ்கந்த³மாதேதி ஷஷ்ட²ம்ʼ காத்யாயநீதி ச।
ஸப்தமம்ʼ காலராத்ரீதி மஹாகௌரீ³தி சாஷ்டமம்॥Panchamam skandamateti shashtham katyayaniti cha, saptamam kalaratriti mahagauriti chashtamam.
Fifth is Skandamata, mother of Skanda; sixth Katyayani; seventh Kalaratri, the dark night; eighth Mahagauri, the radiant white one.
நவமம்ʼ ஸித்³தி⁴தா³த்ரீ ச நவதுர்³கா³꞉ ப்ரகீர்திதா꞉।
உக்தாந்யேதாநி நாமாநி ப்ர³ஹ்மணைவ மஹாத்மநா॥Navamam siddhidatri cha navadurgah prakirtitah, uktanyetani namani brahmanaiva mahatmana.
Ninth is Siddhidatri, giver of perfection. These are the nine Durgas, and these names were told by the great Brahma himself.
அக்³நிநா த³ஹ்யமாநஸ்து ஶத்ருமத்⁴யே க³தோ ரணே।
விஷமே துர்³க³மே சைவ ப⁴யார்தா꞉ ஶரணம்ʼ க³தா꞉॥Agnina dahyamanastu shatrumadhye gato rane, vishame durgame chaiva bhayartah sharanam gatah.
Whoever is caught in fire, surrounded by enemies in battle, or lost in a hard and dangerous place, and in fear takes refuge in her…
ந தேஷாம்ʼ ஜாயதே கிஞ்சித³ஶுப⁴ம்ʼ ரணஸங்கடே।
நாபத³ம்ʼ தஸ்ய பஶ்யாமி ஶோகது³꞉க²ப⁴யம்ʼ ந ஹி॥Na tesham jayate kinchidashubham ranasankate, napadam tasya pashyami shokaduhkhabhayam na hi.
…no harm comes to them even in the danger of battle. I see no misfortune for them, no grief, sorrow or fear.
யைஸ்து ப⁴க்த்யா ஸ்ம்ருʼதா நூநம்ʼ தேஷாம்ʼ வ்ருʼத்³தி⁴꞉ ப்ரஜாயதே।
யே த்வாம்ʼ ஸ்மரந்தி தே³வேஶி ரக்ஷஸே தாந்ந ஸம்ʼஶய꞉॥Yaistu bhaktya smrita nunam tesham vriddhih prajayate, ye tvam smaranti deveshi rakshase tanna samshayah.
Those who remember her with devotion surely prosper. Queen of the gods, you protect those who remember you; there is no doubt.
ப்ரேதஸம்ʼஸ்தா² து சாமுண்டா³ வாராஹீ மஹிஷாஸநா।
ஐந்த்ரீ³ க³ஜஸமாரூடா⁴ வைஷ்ணவீ கரு³டா³ஸநா॥Pretasamstha tu chamunda varahi mahishasana, aindri gajasamarudha vaishnavi garudasana.
Chamunda sits on a corpse, Varahi rides a buffalo, Aindri is mounted on an elephant, Vaishnavi sits on Garuda.
மாஹேஶ்வரீ வ்ருʼஷாரூடா⁴ கௌமாரீ ஶிகி²வாஹநா।
லக்ஷ்மீ꞉ பத்³மாஸநா தே³வீ பத்³மஹஸ்தா ஹரிப்ரியா॥Maheshvari vrisharudha kaumari shikhivahana, lakshmih padmasana devi padmahasta haripriya.
Maheshvari rides a bull, Kaumari a peacock; the goddess Lakshmi, beloved of Vishnu, sits on a lotus with a lotus in her hand.
ஶ்வேதரூபதரா⁴ தே³வீ ஈஶ்வரீ வ்ருʼஷவாஹநா।
ப்ரா³ஹ்மீ ஹம்ʼஸஸமாரூடா⁴ ஸர்வாபர⁴ணபூ⁴ஷிதா॥Shvetarupadhara devi ishvari vrishavahana, brahmi hamsasamarudha sarvabharanabhushita.
The goddess Ishvari, white in form, rides a bull; Brahmi rides a swan, adorned with every ornament.
இத்யேதா மாதர꞉ ஸர்வா꞉ ஸர்வயோக³ஸமந்விதா꞉।
நாநாபர⁴ணஶோபா⁴ட்⁴யா நாநாரத்நோபஶோபி⁴தா꞉॥Ityeta matarah sarvah sarvayogasamanvitah, nanabharanashobhadhya nanaratnopashobhitah.
All these mothers are full of every yogic power, shining with many ornaments and many jewels.
த்ருʼ³ஶ்யந்தே ரத²மாரூடா⁴ தே³வ்ய꞉ க்ரோத⁴ஸமாகுலா꞉।
ஶங்க²ம்ʼ சக்ரம்ʼ க³தா³ம்ʼ ஶக்திம்ʼ ஹலம்ʼ ச முஸலாயுத⁴ம்॥Drishyante rathamarudha devyah krodhasamakulah, shankham chakram gadam shaktim halam cha musalayudham.
These goddesses are seen riding chariots, blazing with anger, holding conch, discus, mace, spear, plough and pestle…
கே²டகம்ʼ தோமரம்ʼ சைவ பரஶும்ʼ பாஶமேவ ச।
குந்தாயுத⁴ம்ʼ த்ரிஶூலம்ʼ ச ஶார்ங்க³மாயுத⁴முத்தமம்॥Khetakam tomaram chaiva parashum pashameva cha, kuntayudham trishulam cha sharngamayudhamuttamam.
…shield, javelin, axe and noose, lance, trident and the great bow Sharnga.
தை³த்யாநாம்ʼ தே³ஹநாஶாய ப⁴க்தாநாமப⁴யாய ச।
தார⁴யந்த்யாயுதா⁴நீத்த²ம்ʼ தே³வாநாம்ʼ ச ஹிதாய வை॥Daityanam dehanashaya bhaktanamabhayaya cha, dharayantyayudhanittham devanam cha hitaya vai.
They carry these weapons to destroy the demons, to free devotees from fear, and for the good of the gods.
நமஸ்தே(அ)ஸ்து மஹாரௌத்ரே³ மஹாகோர⁴பராக்ரமே।
மஹாபலே³ மஹோத்ஸாஹே மஹாப⁴யவிநாஶிநி॥Namastestu maharaudre mahaghoraparakrame, mahabale mahotsahe mahabhayavinashini.
Salutations to you, most fierce one, of terrible valour, of great strength and great energy, destroyer of great fear.
த்ராஹி மாம்ʼ தே³வி து³ஷ்ப்ரேக்ஷ்யே ஶத்ரூணாம்ʼ ப⁴யவர்தி⁴நி।
ப்ராச்யாம்ʼ ரக்ஷது மாமைந்த்ரீ³ ஆக்³நேய்யாமக்³நிதே³வதா॥Trahi mam devi dushprekshye shatrunam bhayavardhini, prachyam rakshatu mamaindri agneyyamagnidevata.
Save me, Goddess, too dazzling to look upon, who fill enemies with fear. May Aindri protect me in the east, and Agni’s goddess in the southeast.
த³க்ஷிணே(அ)வது வாராஹீ நைர்ருʼத்யாம்ʼ க²ட்³க³தாரி⁴ணீ।
ப்ரதீச்யாம்ʼ வாருணீ ரக்ஷேத்³ வாயவ்யாம்ʼ ம்ருʼக³வாஹிநீ॥Dakshinevatu varahi nairrityam khadgadharini, pratichyam varuni rakshed vayavyam mrigavahini.
May Varahi guard me in the south, the sword-bearer in the southwest, Varuni in the west, and she who rides the deer in the northwest.
உதீ³ச்யாம்ʼ பாது கௌமாரீ ஐஶாந்யாம்ʼ ஶூலதாரி⁴ணீ।
ஊர்த்⁴வம்ʼ ப்ர³ஹ்மாணி மே ரக்ஷேத³த⁴ஸ்தாத்³ வைஷ்ணவீ ததா²॥Udichyam patu kaumari aishanyam shuladharini, urdhvam brahmani me rakshedadhastad vaishnavi tatha.
May Kaumari protect me in the north, the trident-bearer in the northeast, Brahmani above and Vaishnavi below.
ஏவம்ʼ த³ஶ தி³ஶோ ரக்ஷேச்சாமுண்டா³ ஶவவாஹநா।
ஜயா மே சாக்ர³த꞉ பாது விஜயா பாது ப்ருʼஷ்ட²த꞉॥Evam dasha disho rakshechchamunda shavavahana, jaya me chagratah patu vijaya patu prishthatah.
So may Chamunda, who rides a corpse, guard all ten directions. May Jaya protect me in front and Vijaya behind.
அஜிதா வாமபார்ஶ்வே து த³க்ஷிணே சாபராஜிதா।
ஶிகா²முத்³யோதிநீ ரக்ஷேது³மா மூர்த்⁴நி வ்யவஸ்தி²தா॥Ajita vamaparshve tu dakshine chaparajita, shikhamudyotini raksheduma murdhni vyavasthita.
Ajita on my left, Aparajita on my right; may Udyotini, the radiant, guard the crown of my head, and Uma stay on my head.
மாலாதரீ⁴ லலாடே ச ப்ரு⁴வௌ ரக்ஷேத்³ யஶஸ்விநீ।
த்ரிநேத்ரா ச ப்ரு⁴வோர்மத்⁴யே யமக⁴ண்டா ச நாஸிகே॥Maladhari lalate cha bhruvau rakshed yashasvini, trinetra cha bhruvormadhye yamaghanta cha nasike.
Maladhari on my forehead, Yashasvini on my brows, the three-eyed one between the brows, Yamaghanta on my nose…
ஶங்கி²நீ சக்ஷுஷோர்மத்⁴யே ஶ்ரோத்ரயோர்த்³வாரவாஸிநீ।
கபோலௌ காலிகா ரக்ஷேத்கர்ணமூலே து ஶாங்கரீ॥Shankhini chakshushormadhye shrotrayordvaravasini, kapolau kalika rakshetkarnamule tu shankari.
Shankhini between my eyes, Dvaravasini on my ears, Kalika on my cheeks and Shankari at the roots of my ears.
நாஸிகாயாம்ʼ ஸுக³ந்தா⁴ ச உத்தரோஷ்டே² ச சர்சிகா।
அதரே⁴ சாம்ருʼதகலா ஜிஹ்வாயாம்ʼ ச ஸரஸ்வதீ॥Nasikayam sugandha cha uttaroshthe cha charchika, adhare chamritakala jihvayam cha sarasvati.
Sugandha in my nostrils, Charchika on my upper lip, Amritakala on my lower lip and Saraswati on my tongue.
த³ந்தாந் ரக்ஷது கௌமாரீ கண்ட²தே³ஶே து சண்டி³கா।
க⁴ண்டிகாம்ʼ சித்ரக⁴ண்டா ச மஹாமாயா ச தாலுகே॥Dantan rakshatu kaumari kanthadeshe tu chandika, ghantikam chitraghanta cha mahamaya cha taluke.
May Kaumari guard my teeth, Chandika my throat, Chitraghanta my uvula and Mahamaya my palate.
காமாக்ஷீ சிபு³கம்ʼ ரக்ஷேத்³ வாசம்ʼ மே ஸர்வமங்கலா³।
க்ரீ³வாயாம்ʼ ப⁴த்ர³காலீ ச ப்ருʼஷ்ட²வம்ʼஶே த⁴நுர்தரீ⁴॥Kamakshi chibukam rakshed vacham me sarvamangala, grivayam bhadrakali cha prishthavamshe dhanurdhari.
Kamakshi my chin, Sarvamangala my speech, Bhadrakali my neck, and the bow-bearer my spine.
நீலக்ரீ³வா ப³ஹி꞉கண்டே² நலிகாம்ʼ நலகூபரீ³।
ஸ்கந்த⁴யோ꞉ க²ட்³கி³நீ ரக்ஷேத்³ பா³ஹூ மே வஜ்ரதாரி⁴ணீ॥Nilagriva bahihkanthe nalikam nalakubari, skandhayoh khadgini rakshed bahu me vajradharini.
Nilagriva the outside of my throat, Nalakubari my windpipe, Khadgini my shoulders and Vajradharini my arms.
ஹஸ்தயோர்த³ண்டி³நீ ரக்ஷேத³ம்பி³கா சாங்குலீ³ஷு ச।
நகா²ஞ்சூலே²ஶ்வரீ ரக்ஷேத்குக்ஷௌ ரக்ஷேத்குலேஶ்வரீ॥Hastayordandini rakshedambika changulishu cha, nakhanchhuleshvari rakshetkukshau rakshetkuleshvari.
Dandini my hands, Ambika my fingers, Shuleshvari my nails, and Kuleshvari my belly.
ஸ்தநௌ ரக்ஷேந்மஹாதே³வீ மந꞉ ஶோகவிநாஶிநீ।
ஹ்ருʼத³யே லலிதா தே³வீ உதரே³ ஶூலதாரி⁴ணீ॥Stanau rakshenmahadevi manah shokavinashini, hridaye lalita devi udare shuladharini.
Mahadevi my breast, Shokavinashini, who ends sorrow, my mind; the goddess Lalita my heart, and the trident-bearer my stomach.
நாபௌ⁴ ச காமிநீ ரக்ஷேத்³ கு³ஹ்யம்ʼ கு³ஹ்யேஶ்வரீ ததா²।
பூதநா காமிகா மேட்ர⁴ம்ʼ கு³தே³ மஹிஷவாஹிநீ॥Nabhau cha kamini rakshed guhyam guhyeshvari tatha, putana kamika medhram gude mahishavahini.
Kamini my navel, Guhyeshvari my private parts, Putana and Kamika my organ, and she who rides the buffalo my lower body.
கட்யாம்ʼ ப⁴க³வதீ ரக்ஷேஜ்ஜாநுநீ விந்த்⁴யவாஸிநீ।
ஜங்கே⁴ மஹாபலா³ ரக்ஷேத்ஸர்வகாமப்ரதா³யிநீ॥Katyam bhagavati rakshejjanuni vindhyavasini, janghe mahabala rakshetsarvakamapradayini.
Bhagavati my waist, Vindhyavasini my knees, and Mahabala, who grants every wish, my shins.
குல்³ப²யோர்நாரஸிம்ʼஹீ ச பாத³ப்ருʼஷ்டே² து தைஜஸீ।
பாதா³ங்குலீ³ஷு ஶ்ரீ ரக்ஷேத்பாதா³த⁴ஸ்தலவாஸிநீ॥Gulphayornarasimhi cha padaprishthe tu taijasi, padangulishu shri rakshetpadadhastalavasini.
Narasimhi my ankles, Taijasi the tops of my feet, Shri my toes, and Talavasini the soles of my feet.
நகா²ந் த³ம்ʼஷ்ட்ராகராலீ ச கேஶாம்ʼஶ்சைவோர்த்⁴வகேஶிநீ।
ரோமகூபேஷு கௌபேரீ³ த்வசம்ʼ வாகீ³ஶ்வரீ ததா²॥Nakhan damshtrakarali cha keshamshchaivordhvakeshini, romakupeshu kauberi tvacham vagishvari tatha.
Damshtrakarali my nails, Urdhvakeshini my hair, Kauberi my pores, and Vagishvari my skin.
ரக்தமஜ்ஜாவஸாமாம்ʼஸாந்யஸ்தி²மேதா³ம்ʼஸி பார்வதீ।
அந்த்ராணி காலராத்ரிஶ்ச பித்தம்ʼ ச முகுடேஶ்வரீ॥Raktamajjavasamamsanyasthimedamsi parvati, antrani kalaratrishcha pittam cha mukuteshvari.
Parvati my blood, marrow, fat, flesh, bones and tissue; Kalaratri my intestines and Mukuteshvari my bile.
பத்³மாவதீ பத்³மகோஶே கபே² சூடா³மணிஸ்ததா²।
ஜ்வாலாமுகீ² நக²ஜ்வாலாமபே⁴த்³யா ஸர்வஸந்தி⁴ஷு॥Padmavati padmakoshe kaphe chudamanistatha, jvalamukhi nakhajvalamabhedya sarvasandhishu.
Padmavati the lotus of my heart, Chudamani my phlegm, Jvalamukhi the glow of my nails, and Abhedya all my joints.
ஶுக்ரம்ʼ ப்ர³ஹ்மாணி மே ரக்ஷேச்சா²யாம்ʼ ச²த்ரேஶ்வரீ ததா²।
அஹங்காரம்ʼ மநோ பு³த்³தி⁴ம்ʼ ரக்ஷேந்மே தர்⁴மதாரி⁴ணீ॥Shukram brahmani me rakshechchhayam chhatreshvari tatha, ahankaram mano buddhim rakshenme dharmadharini.
May Brahmani guard my vital seed, Chhatreshvari my shadow, and Dharmadharini my ego, mind and intellect.
ப்ராணாபாநௌ ததா² வ்யாநமுதா³நம்ʼ ச ஸமாநகம்।
வஜ்ரஹஸ்தா ச மே ரக்ஷேத்ப்ராணம்ʼ கல்யாணஶோப⁴நா॥Pranapanau tatha vyanamudanam cha samanakam, vajrahasta cha me rakshetpranam kalyanashobhana.
May Vajrahasta guard my five life-breaths, prana, apana, vyana, udana and samana, and may Kalyanashobhana guard my life.
ரஸே ரூபே ச க³ந்தே⁴ ச ஶப்³தே³ ஸ்பர்ஶே ச யோகி³நீ।
ஸத்த்வம்ʼ ரஜஸ்தமஶ்சைவ ரக்ஷேந்நாராயணீ ஸதா³॥Rase rupe cha gandhe cha shabde sparshe cha yogini, sattvam rajastamashchaiva rakshennarayani sada.
May Yogini guard my senses of taste, sight, smell, sound and touch, and may Narayani always guard my qualities of goodness, passion and inertia.
ஆயூ ரக்ஷது வாராஹீ தர்⁴மம்ʼ ரக்ஷது வைஷ்ணவீ।
யஶ꞉ கீர்திம்ʼ ச லக்ஷ்மீம்ʼ ச த⁴நம்ʼ வித்³யாம்ʼ ச சக்ரிணீ॥Ayu rakshatu varahi dharmam rakshatu vaishnavi, yashah kirtim cha lakshmim cha dhanam vidyam cha chakrini.
May Varahi protect my life span, Vaishnavi my dharma, and Chakrini my good name, fame, fortune, wealth and learning.
கோ³த்ரமிந்த்ரா³ணி மே ரக்ஷேத்பஶூந்மே ரக்ஷ சண்டி³கே।
புத்ராந் ரக்ஷேந்மஹாலக்ஷ்மீர்பார்⁴யாம்ʼ ரக்ஷது பைர⁴வீ॥Gotramindrani me rakshetpashunme raksha chandike, putran rakshenmahalakshmirbharyam rakshatu bhairavi.
May Indrani protect my lineage; Chandika, protect my cattle. May Mahalakshmi protect my children and Bhairavi my wife.
பந்தா²நம்ʼ ஸுபதா² ரக்ஷேந்மார்க³ம்ʼ க்ஷேமகரீ ததா²।
ராஜத்³வாரே மஹாலக்ஷ்மீர்விஜயா ஸர்வத꞉ ஸ்தி²தா॥Panthanam supatha rakshenmargam kshemakari tatha, rajadvare mahalakshmirvijaya sarvatah sthita.
May Supatha guard my path and Kshemakari my journey; at the king’s court may Mahalakshmi, and everywhere may Vijaya, stand by me.
ரக்ஷாஹீநம்ʼ து யத்ஸ்தா²நம்ʼ வர்ஜிதம்ʼ கவசேந து।
தத்ஸர்வம்ʼ ரக்ஷ மே தே³வி ஜயந்தீ பாபநாஶிநீ॥Rakshahinam tu yatsthanam varjitam kavachena tu, tatsarvam raksha me devi jayanti papanashini.
Any place left unguarded, not covered by this armour, protect all of it for me, Goddess Jayanti, destroyer of sin.
பத³மேகம்ʼ ந க³ச்சே²த்து யதீ³ச்சே²ச்சு²ப⁴மாத்மந꞉।
கவசேநாவ்ருʼதோ நித்யம்ʼ யத்ர யத்ரைவ க³ச்ச²தி॥Padamekam na gachchhettu yadichchhechchhubhamatmanah, kavachenavrito nityam yatra yatraiva gachchhati.
Whoever wants their own good should not take a single step without this armour. Whoever always goes covered by it, wherever they go…
தத்ர தத்ரார்தலா²ப⁴ஶ்ச விஜய꞉ ஸார்வகாமிக꞉।
யம்ʼ யம்ʼ சிந்தயதே காமம்ʼ தம்ʼ தம்ʼ ப்ராப்நோதி நிஶ்சிதம்।
பரமைஶ்வர்யமதுலம்ʼ ப்ராப்ஸ்யதே பூ⁴தலே புமாந்॥Tatra tatrarthalabhashcha vijayah sarvakamikah, yam yam chintayate kamam tam tam prapnoti nishchitam, paramaishvaryamatulam prapsyate bhutale puman.
…there they gain wealth and victory in every aim. Whatever they wish for, they surely obtain, and they win unequalled prosperity on earth.
நிர்ப⁴யோ ஜாயதே மர்த்ய꞉ ஸங்க்ரா³மேஷ்வபராஜித꞉।
த்ரைலோக்யே து ப⁴வேத்பூஜ்ய꞉ கவசேநாவ்ருʼத꞉ புமாந்॥Nirbhayo jayate martyah sangrameshvaparajitah, trailokye tu bhavetpujyah kavachenavritah puman.
One covered by this armour becomes fearless, undefeated in battle, and honoured in all three worlds.
இத³ம்ʼ து தே³வ்யா꞉ கவசம்ʼ தே³வாநாமபி துர்ல³ப⁴ம்।
