People we see before our eyes are suddenly seen no more; it is you, Lord, who makes it so.

Kandalottariyunnu chilarithu, kandalum thiriya chilarkkethume.
Some understand this a little when they see it; others, even seeing it, understand nothing at all.

For those suited to the path of knowledge, there are many scriptures of wisdom too.

Nammeyokkeyum bandhiccha sadhanam, karmamennariyendathu mumbinal
First of all, know that what binds us all is karma, our own actions.
Munnamikkanda vishwamasheshavum, onnayulloru jyothiswaroopamay
In the beginning, this whole universe we see existed as one single light,
Onnum chennangu thannodu pattathe, onninum chennu thanum valayathe
to which nothing clings, and which itself is caught by nothing,
Onnonnayi ninaykkum janangalkku, onnukondarivakunna vasthuvay
a reality known as the One by those who contemplate it as one alone,
Onnilumariyattha janangalkku, onnukondum thiriyattha vasthuvay
and which cannot be grasped by any means by those who understand nothing,
Onnupoleyonnillatheyullathin, onnayulloru jeevaswaroopamay
with nothing else like it, the one living Self of all that exists,
Onnilumoru bandhamillatheyay, ninnavan thanne vishwam chamacchupol.

Moonnumonniladangunnu pinneyum, onnumillapol vishwamanneratthu.
Then the three worlds merge back into the One, and at that time, they say, the universe is not at all.
Onnu kondu chamacchoru vishwatthil, moonnayittulla karmangalokkeyum
In this universe made from the One, all actions are of three kinds:
Punyakarmangal papakarmangalum, punyapapangal mishramam karmavum
good deeds, sinful deeds, and deeds that mix good and sin.
Moonnu jathi niroopicchu kanumbol, moonnu kondum thalaykkunnu jeevane.
Think about these three kinds and you see that all three alike keep the soul in chains.
Ponnin changalayonnipparanjathil, onnirumbu kondennathre bhedangal.
Of these, one is a chain of gold and one a chain of iron; that is the only difference.
Randinalumedutthu panicheytha, changalayallo mishramam karmavum.
And mixed karma is a chain forged from both metals together.

All of us, doers of small deeds, in a short while become one creature after another,

Garbhapathratthil pukkum purappettum, karmam kondu kalikkunnathingane.

Seemayillatholam pala karmangal, bhoomiyeennathre nedunnu jeevanmar.

Ethra janmam malatthil kazhinjathum, ethra janmam jalatthil kazhinjathum

Ethra janmam aricchu nadannathum, ethra janmam mrigangal pashukkalay
