Nenjak kanakallu negizhndhu urugath, thanjaththu arul Shanmuganukku iyalser, senjol punaimaalai sirandhidave, panjakkara aanai padham panivaam.

So that this garland of fine words for Shanmukha, who gives grace to all who seek refuge and melts even a stone-hard heart, may turn out well, we bow at the feet of the five-handed elephant god, Ganesha.

Aadum pari vel ani seval enap, paadum paniye paniyaa arulvaai, thedum kayamaa muganaich cheruvil, saadum thani yaanaich sagodharane.

Bless me so that my only work is singing of your dancing peacock steed, your spear and your splendid rooster, O brother of the peerless elephant god who crushed the elephant-faced demon in battle.

Ullaasa niraakula yoga idhach, sallaapa vinodhanum nee alaiyo, ellaam ara ennai izhandha nalam, sollaai Murugaa surabhoo padhiye.

Are you not the one who delights in joyful, untroubled union and sweet converse? Murugan, lord of the gods, tell me of that bliss where everything fell away and I lost myself.

Vaano punal paar kanal maarudhamo, gnaano dhayamo navil naan maraiyo, yaano manamo enai aanda idam, thaano porulaavadhu Shanmugane.

Is it sky, water, earth, fire or wind? The dawn of wisdom, or the four Vedas? The self, or the mind? Shanmukha, that state in which you took me as your own is none of these: it alone is the Real.

Valaipatta kai maadhodu makkal enum, thalaipattu azhiyath thagumo thagumo, kilaipattu ezhu soor uramum giriyum, tholaipattu uruvath thodu Velavane.

Is it right, is it right, that I perish in the bonds of a bangled wife and children? O spear-bearer, whose spear pierced clean through the chest of Sura, risen with all his kin, and through the mountain.

Maga maayai kalaindhida valla piraan, mugam aarum mozhindhu ozhindhilane, agam maadai madandhaiyar endru ayarum, sagamaayaiyul nindru thayanguvadhe.

The Lord who can dispel great illusion has taught with all six faces without pause, yet I still stand wavering in the world’s illusion, pining for house, gold and women.

Thiniyaana mano silai meedhu unadhaal, aniyaar aravindham arumbumadho, paniyaa ena Valli padham paniyum, thaniyaa adhimoga dhayaa parane.

Will your lotus feet ever blossom on the hard rock of my mind? O compassionate Supreme, whose great love never cools, who bows at Valli’s feet saying, ‘Command me.’

Keduvaai manane gadhi kel karavaadhu, iduvaai vadivel iraidhaal ninaivaai, suduvaai nedu vedhanai thoolpadave, viduvaai viduvaai vinai yaavaiyume.

O mind, you are heading for ruin; hear the way out. Give without holding back, think of the feet of the Lord of the spear, burn your long suffering to dust, and let go, let go of all karma.

Amarum padhi kel agam aam enum ip, pimaram keda meip porul pesiyavaa, Kumaran Giriraaja kumaari magan, samaram poru dhaanava naasagane.

You taught me the truth so that this delusion of settled home, kin and ‘I’ would end: Kumaran, son of the Mountain King’s daughter, destroyer of the demons who made war.

Mattoor kuzhal mangaiyar maiyal valaip, pattu oosalpadum parisu endru ozhiven, thattu oodu ara vel sayilaththu eriyum, nittoora niraakula nirbayane.

When will I stop swinging to and fro, caught in the net of longing for women with honey-scented hair? O stern, untroubled and fearless one, who hurled your spear clean through the mountain.

Kaar maa misai Kaalan varil kalabath, thermaa misai vandhu edhirap paduvaai, thaar maarba valaari thalaari enum, soormaa madiyath thodu Velavane.

When Death comes riding his dark buffalo, come and face him on your feathered peacock. O spear-bearer with a garlanded chest, who hurled the spear that brought down the mighty Sura, tormentor of Indra.

Koogaa ena en kilai koodi azhap, pogaa vagai meipporul pesiyavaa, Naagaasala Velava naalu kavith, thiyaagaa suraloga sigaamaniye.

You taught me the truth so I would not die with my kin gathered round, wailing aloud. Spear-bearer of the serpent hill, generous giver of the four kinds of poetry, crest-jewel of the heavens.

Semmaan magalaith thirudum thirudan, pemmaan Murugan piravaan iravaan, summaa iru sol ara endralume, ammaa porul ondrum arindhilane.

The great Lord Murugan, the thief who stole Valli, daughter of the red deer, who is never born and never dies, said to me, ‘Be still, beyond words’; and at that, oh, I knew nothing else at all.

Murugan thanivel muni nam guru endru, arul kondu ariyaar ariyum tharamo, uru andru aru andru uladhu andru iladhu andru, irul andru oli andru ena nindradhuve.

Murugan of the peerless spear, the sage who is our guru: can those who do not know him through grace understand it? It is not form nor formless, not being nor non-being, not darkness nor light: so it stands.

Kaivaai kadhirvel Murugan kazhal petru, uyvaai manane ozhivaai ozhivaai, mei vaai vizhi naasiyodum sevi aam, aivaai vazhi sellum avaavinaiye.

O mind, reach the feet of Murugan, the shining spear in his hand, and be saved. Give up, give up the craving that runs out through the five gates: body, mouth, eyes, nose and ears.

Murugan Kumaran Guhan endru mozhindhu, urugum seyal thandhu unarvu endru arulvaai, poru pungavarum puviyum paravum, gurupungava en guna pancharane.

When will you grant me a heart that melts as it calls out Murugan, Kumaran, Guha, and true awareness too? O greatest of gurus, praised by the warrior gods and by the earth, home of the eight divine qualities.

Peraasai enum piniyil pinipattu, oraa vinaiyen uzhalath thagumo, veeraa mudhu soor pada vel eriyum, sooraa sura loga thurandharane.

Is it right that I, a thoughtless sinner, wander bound by the disease of greed? O hero who hurled the spear that felled the ancient Sura, valiant upholder of the world of the gods.

Yaam odhiya kalviyum em arivum, thaame pera Velavar thandhadhanaal, poo mel mayal poi aram meip punarveer, naa mel nadaveer nadaveer iniye.

All the learning we have and our very understanding were given by the Lord of the spear; so let go of your craze for the world, hold to dharma and truth, and from now on keep his praise on your tongue.

Udhiyaa mariyaa unaraa maravaa, vidhi maal ariyaa vimalan pudhalvaa, adhigaa anagaa abayaa amaraa, padhi kaavala soora bayangarane.

Son of the pure Shiva, who is never born and never dies, needs no learning and never forgets, and whom Brahma and Vishnu could not know: supreme, sinless, giver of refuge, guardian of the city of the gods, terror of Sura.

Vadivum dhanamum manamum gunamum, kudiyum kulamum kudipogiyavaa, adi andham ilaa ayil vel arase, midi endru oru paavi velippadine.

Looks, wealth, mind, virtue, family and clan: how they all move out the moment that one wretch called poverty shows up! O king of the sharp spear, without beginning or end.

Aridhaagiya meip porulukku adiyen, uridhaa upadhesam unarththiyavaa, viridhaarana vikrama Vel imaiyor, puri thaaraga naaga purandharane.

You taught me, your servant, the rare truth as if it were my own. O valiant lord with the spreading garland, who destroyed Taraka and split the mountain to protect the city of the gods.

Karudhaa maravaa neri kaana enakku, iruthaal vanasam thara endru isaivaai, varadhaa Murugaa mayil vaaganane, viradhaa sura soora vibaadanane.

When will you agree to give me your two lotus feet, so I may know the state beyond thinking and forgetting? Giver of boons, Murugan, rider of the peacock, steadfast one, destroyer of the demon Sura.

Kaalaik Kumaresan enak karudhith, thaalaip paniyath thavam eidhiyavaa, paalaik kuzhal Valli padham paniyum, Velaich sura boobadhi Meruvaiye.

What merit did I earn that I came to see you as the youthful Kumaresa and bow at your feet? You who bow at the feet of Valli, whose hair is like the palm blossom; Vel, lord of the gods, steady as Mount Meru.

Adiyaik kuriyaadhu ariyaamaiyinaal, mudiyak kedavo muraiyo muraiyo, vadi vikrama vel magibaa kuramin, kodiyaip punarum guna bhoodharane.

Am I to be ruined completely because, in ignorance, I never fixed my mind on your feet? Is that just, is it just? O king of the keen and mighty spear, mountain of virtue, who embraces Valli, the hill girl slender as a vine.

Koorvel vizhi mangaiyar kongaiyile, server arul seravum ennumadho, soor verodu kundru tholaiththa nedum, por vela purandhara boobadhiye.

I keep chasing women with eyes sharp as spears; will I ever think of reaching your grace? O protector king, whose long battle spear tore out Sura by the roots and pierced the mountain.

Meiye ena vevvinai vaazhvai ugandhu, aiyo adiyen alaiyath thagumo, kaiyo ayilo kazhalo muzhudhum, seiyoi mayil eriya sevagane.

Alas, is it right that I wander, treasuring this harsh karmic life as if it were real? O red-hued warrior mounted on the peacock, red in hand, spear and feet alike.

Aadhaaram ilen arulaip perave, needhaan oru satrum ninaindhilaiye, vedhaagama gnaana vinodha mana, adheedhaa suraloga sigaamaniye.

I have no support of my own, yet you have not given even a moment’s thought to granting me grace. O you who delight in the wisdom of the Vedas and Agamas, beyond the reach of the mind, crest-jewel of the heavens.

Minne nigar vaazhvai virumbiya yaan, enne vidhiyin payan ingu idhuvo, ponne maniye porule arule, manne mayil eriya vaanavane.

I longed for a life that flashes past like lightning: alas, is this what fate brings me here? O gold, O jewel, O treasure, O grace, O king, divine one who rides the peacock.

Aanaa amudhe ayil vel arase, gnaanaagarane navilath thagumo, yaan aagiya ennai vizhungi verum, thaanaai nilai nindradhu thatparame.

Endless nectar, king of the sharp spear, mine of wisdom: can this be put into words? The Supreme swallowed the ‘I’ that I was, and remained alone as pure Itself.

Ille enum maayaiyil ittanai nee, pollen ariyaamai poruththilaiye, malle puri panniru vaaguvil en, solle punaiyum sudar Velavane.

You cast me into the illusion called household life; will you not forgive the ignorance of this wicked one? O radiant spear-bearer, who wears my words as a garland on your twelve mighty arms.

Sevvaan uruvil thigazh Velavan andru, ovvaadhadhu ena unarviththadhudhaan, avvaaru arivaar arigindradhu alaal, evvaaru oruvarkku isaivippadhuve.

What the spear-bearer, shining in a form red as the evening sky, made me realise that day is beyond compare; only those who know it know it so. How could it ever be explained to anyone?

Paazhvaazhvu enum ip padumaayaiyile, veezhvaai ena ennai vidhiththanaiye, thaazhvaanavai seidhana thaam ulavo, vaazhvaai ini nee mayil vaaganane.

You ordained that I fall into this deep illusion called a wasted life; have I done anything so low? From now on, rider of the peacock, be my life.

Kalaiye padharik kadharith thalaiyoodu, alaiye padumaaru adhuvaai vidavo, kolaiye puri vedar kulap pidi thoi, malaiye malai kooridu vaagaiyane.

Must I be left to flounder, my learning in turmoil, crying out with my head in a whirl? O mountain of grace who loves the daughter of the hunting tribe, victor who split the mountain apart.

Sindhaakula illodu selvam enum, vindhaadavi endru vidap peruven, Mandhaakini thandha varodhayane, Kandhaa Murugaa karunaakarane.

When will I be free to leave this wild forest of home and wealth that troubles the mind? Son born as a boon of the heavenly Ganga; Kanda, Murugan, ocean of compassion.

Singaara madandhaiyar theeneri poi, mangaamal enakku varam tharuvaai, sangraama sigaavala Shanmugane, Gangaanadhi baala kripaakarane.

Grant me the boon that I do not waste away on the wrong path of alluring women. Shanmukha, warrior who rides the peacock into battle, child of the Ganga, ocean of mercy.

Vidhikaanum udambai vidaa vinaiyen, gadhikaana malark kazhal endru arulvaai, madhi vaalnudhal Valliyai alladhu pin, thudhiyaa viradhaa sura boobadhiye.

I am a sinner who clings to this body ruled by fate; when will you grant me your flower feet so I can see the way to freedom? O lord of the gods, true to your vow, who praises none but Valli with her moon-bright brow.

Naadhaa Kumaraa nama endru Aranaar, odhaai ena odhiyadhu epporul thaan, Vedhaa mudhal vinnavar soodum malarp, paadhaa kuramin padha segarane.

What was the truth you spoke when Shiva said, ‘Lord Kumara, I bow to you; teach me’? O you whose flower feet Brahma and the gods wear on their heads, yet who wear on your own head the feet of Valli, the hill maiden.

Girivaai vidu vikrama vel iraiyon, parivaaram enum padham mevalaiye, purivaai manane poraiyaam arivaal, arivaai adiyodum agandhaiyaiye.

O mind, you have not yet earned a place among the attendants of the Lord whose mighty spear split the mountain. Act now: with the wisdom of patience, cut ego away by its roots.

Aadhaaliyai ondru ariyenai arath, theedhu aaliyai aandadhu seppumadho, koodhaala Kiraadha kulikku iraivaa, Vedhaala ganam pugazh Velavane.

Can it be told, how you took me into your service, a braggart who knows nothing, wholly given to wrong? Lord of the hunter maiden who wears koothalam flowers, spear-bearer praised even by the hosts of spirits.

Maavezh sananam keda maayaividaa, moovedanai endru mudindhidumo, kove kuramin kodithol punarum, deve Siva Sankara dhesigane.

When will the three cravings, for land, wealth and children, which feed illusion and keep the seven kinds of birth turning, ever end? O king, divine one who embraces the vine-slender shoulders of Valli, teacher of Shiva Shankara himself.

Vinai oda vidum kadhir vel maraven, manaiyodu thiyangi mayangidavo, sunaiyodu aruvith thuraiyodu pasun, thinaiyodu idhanodu thirindhavane.

I will never forget the shining spear that drives away karma; why then should I be lost and bewildered in household life? O you who wandered by springs and waterfalls, green millet fields and watch platforms to win Valli.

Saagaadhu enaiye saranangalile, kaa kaa Namanaar kalagam seyum naal, vaagaa Murugaa mayil vaaganane, yogaa Siva gnaana upadhesigane.

On the day Yama comes raising his uproar, keep me safe at your feet so I do not die; protect me, protect me. Victorious Murugan, rider of the peacock, master of yoga, teacher of the wisdom of Shiva.

Kuriyaik kuriyaadhu kuriththu ariyum, neriyaith thanivelai nigazhththidalum, serivu atru ulagodu urai sindhaiyum atru, arivu atru ariyaamaiyum atradhuve.

When the lord of the peerless spear showed me how to know the goal without aiming at it, all clinging ended; the world, speech and thought ended; knowing ended, and not-knowing too.

Thoosaa maniyum thugilum punaivaal, nesaa Murugaa ninadhu anbu arulaal, aasaa nigalam thugalaayina pin, pesaa anuboodhi pirandhadhuve.

Murugan, beloved of Valli, who wears jewels and fine cloth: by your loving grace, once the chains of desire crumbled to dust, the wordless experience of the divine was born.

Saadum thanivel Murugan saranam, soodum padi thandhadhu sollumadho, veedum surar maamudi vedhamum vem, kaadum punamum kamazhum kazhale.

Can it be told, how Murugan of the peerless, striking spear let me wear his feet on my head? Those feet are fragrant in liberation, on the crowns of the gods, in the Vedas, in the hot forest and in the millet fields.

Karavaagiya kalvi ulaar kadai sendru, iravaa vagai meip porul eeguvaiyo, kuravaa Kumaraa kulisaayudha kun, jaravaa Sivayoga dhayaa parane.
