ഹിരണ്യാക്ഷം താവദ്വരദ ഭവദന്വേഷണപരം ചരന്തം സാംവര്തേ പയസി നിജജങ്ഘാപരിമിതേ।

O giver of boons, as Hiranyaksha roamed searching for you through the waters of the deluge, which reached only his knees, your devotee Narada, clever at pretence, went and quietly spoke to him, flattering the demon while belittling your strength.

“That trickster Vishnu is carrying off your earth, my lord. What a shame, what a shame!” At these words the demon roared, “Where is he? Where is he?” and, shown the way by the sage, came upon you as you lifted the earth from the water.

“Ha, a wild beast!” he laughed, piercing you with insults. Ignoring Diti’s son, Lord, you saw the earth trembling on the tip of your tusk, set it firmly on the ocean by your own power, and then turned to battle.

When the demon took up his mace, you too raised a mighty mace and sported in combat, the sky ringing with the clash of blows. As the gods gathered eager to watch, Brahma said to you, “Kill him quickly, before twilight.”

In that clash of maces, when the demon’s blow knocked your mace to the ground, ah! you smiled gently, called to mind your great discus, so skilled at uprooting the demon race, and shone holding it in your hand.

Then the demon, furious as Death, hurled a trident, and you cut it down with the discus in your hand. Enraged, he struck you with his fist, and then cast world-bewildering illusions at you, in whom all illusion melts away.

When that web of illusion was scattered by a single spark from your discus, the demon, blinded by swelling rage, kept pounding you with heavy blows of his fists; and you killed him with your big toe at the root of his ear.

That giant, struck down by your lotus hand, fell with blood streaming from his mouth, and the sages praised his slaying. Then the great sages, their hearts glowing with overflowing joy, extolled you, whose very body is the sacrifice, in rich hymns.

“In your skin are the Vedic metres, in your bristles the sacred kusha grass, in your eyes the ghee, in your feet the four priests, in your mouth the ladle, in your belly the offering vessel, on your tongue the soma cups, in your ears the drinking bowls, O Supreme Person; your vigour is the soma, and in your neck are the upasad rites.”

Delighted by these and other hymns of the sages, shining in your majestic form and spotless fame, you returned to your own abode, rejoicing in bliss. O enemy of Madhu, Lord of Guruvayur, put an end to all my illness.
