Daksho virinchatanayotha manostanujam labdhva prasutimiha shodasha chapa kanyah, dharme trayodasha dadau pitrishu svadham cha svaham havirbhuji satim girishe tvadamshe.

Then Daksha, son of Brahma, married Prasuti, the daughter of Manu, and had sixteen daughters. He gave thirteen to Dharma, Svadha to the ancestors, Svaha to Agni who receives the offerings, and Sati to Shiva, who is a part of you.

Murtirhi dharmagrihini sushuve bhavantam narayanam narasakham mahitanubhavam, yajjanmani pramuditah kritaturyaghoshah pushpotkaranpravavrishurnunuvuh suraughah.

Murti, Dharma’s wife, gave birth to you as Narayana of great glory, with Nara as your companion. At your birth the delighted gods sounded trumpets, showered flowers and sang your praise.

Daityam sahasrakavacham kavachaih paritam sahasravatsaratapassamarabhilavyaih, paryayanirmitatapassamarau bhavantau shishtaikakankatamamum nyahatam salilam.

The demon Sahasrakavacha was clad in a thousand armours, each to be broken only by one who had done a thousand years of penance and then fought. Taking turns at penance and battle, you two playfully struck him down until only a single armour was left.

Anvacharannupadishannapi mokshadharmam tvam bhratriman badarikashramamadhyavatsih, shakrotha te shamatapobalanissahatma divyanganaparivritam prajighaya maram.

Living out and teaching the path to liberation, you dwelt with your brother at Badarikashrama. Then Indra, unable to bear the power of your calm and penance, sent Kama, the god of love, surrounded by heavenly women.

Kamo vasantamalayanilabandhushali kantakatakshavishikhairvikasadvilasaih, vidhyanmuhurmuhurakampamudikshya cha tvam bhitastvayatha jagade mriduhasabhaja.

Kama, with his friends the spring and the Malaya breeze, shot again and again the arrows of lovely women’s glances and charms; but seeing you unmoved, he grew afraid, and you, smiling gently, spoke to him.

Bhityalamangajavasantasurangana vo manmanasantviha jushadhvamiti bruvanah, tvam vismayena paritah stuvatamathaisham pradarshayah svaparicharakakatarakshih.

Enough of fear, Kama, Spring and heavenly maidens; accept my hospitality here, you said. And as they praised you all around in wonder, you showed them your own attendants, women with lovely, gentle eyes.

Sammohanaya milita madanadayaste tvaddasikaparimalaih kila mohamapuh, dattam tvaya cha jagrihustrapayaiva sarvasvarvasigarvashamanim punarurvashim tam.

Kama and the others, who had gathered to bewitch you, were themselves bewitched by the fragrance of your attendants; and in shame they accepted the one you gave them, Urvashi, who humbled the pride of all heaven’s dwellers.

Drishtvorvashim tava katham cha nishamya shakrah paryakulojani bhavanmahimavamarshat, evam prashantaramaniyatarovatarastvattodhiko varada krishnatanustvameva.

Seeing Urvashi and hearing what had happened, Indra was shaken as he reflected on your greatness. So serene and lovely was this incarnation; O giver of boons, only you yourself, as Krishna, surpass it.

Dakshastu dhaturatilalanaya rajondho natyadritastvayi cha kashtamashantirasit, yena vyarundha sa bhavattanumeva sharvam yajne cha vairapishune svasutam vyamanit.

But Daksha, blinded by passion from Brahma’s indulgence, did not honour you, and alas there was strife; he opposed Shiva, who is your very form, and at a sacrifice full of spite he insulted his own daughter.

Kruddhe shamarditamakhah sa tu krittashirsho devaprasaditaharadatha labdhajivah, tvatpuritakratuvarah punarapa shantim sa tvam prashantikara pahi marutpuresha.

When Shiva grew angry, the sacrifice was ruined and Daksha’s head cut off; then, when the gods appeased Shiva, Daksha was restored to life, and with the sacrifice completed by you, he found peace again. You who bring peace, Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
