Uttanapadanripatermanunandanasya jaya babhuva suruchirnitaramabhishta, anya sunitiriti bharturanadrita sa tvameva nityamagatih sharanam gatabhut.

King Uttanapada, son of Manu, had a wife named Suruchi whom he loved dearly. His other wife, Suniti, was neglected by her husband, and with nowhere else to turn she always took refuge in you alone.

Anke pituh suruchiputrakamuttamam tam drishtva dhruvah kila sunitisutodhirokshyan, achikshipe kila shishuh sutaram suruchya dussantyaja khalu bhavadvimukhairasuya.

Seeing Suruchi’s son Uttama sitting on his father’s lap, Suniti’s son Dhruva tried to climb up too, but the little boy was harshly rebuked by Suruchi. Jealousy is hard to give up for those who turn away from you.

Tvanmohite pitari pashyati daravashye duram duruktinihatah sa gato nijambam, sapi svakarmagatisantaranaya pumsam tvatpadameva sharanam shishave shashamsa.

While his father, deluded by your maya and ruled by his wife, merely looked on, the boy, stung by harsh words, went far away to his own mother. She told the child that to get past the course of one’s own karma, your feet alone are the refuge.

Akarnya sopi bhavadarchananishchitatma mani niretya nagaratkila panchavarshah, sandrishtanaradaniveditamantramargastvamararadha tapasa madhukananante.

Hearing this, the proud five-year-old, determined to worship you, left the city. Meeting Narada, who taught him the mantra and the way, he worshipped you with austerities in the Madhuvana forest.

Tate vishannahridaye nagarim gatena shrinaradena parisantvitachittavrittau, balastvadarpitamanah kramavardhitena ninye kathoratapasa kila pancha masan.

While Narada went to the city and comforted his grieving father, the boy, his mind given over to you, spent five months in austerities that grew ever more severe.

Tavattapobalaniruchchhvasite digante devarthitastvamudayatkarunardrachetah, tvadrupachidrasanilinamateh purastadavirbabhuvitha vibho garudadhirudhah.

When the power of his austerities had choked the breath of the whole world, the gods appealed to you, and your heart melting with compassion, you appeared before him on Garuda, all-pervading Lord, as his mind lay absorbed in the bliss of your form.

Seeing him surging with joy at the sight of you, as if drowning his eyes in the nectar of your beauty, and longing to praise you, you touched his cheek with your conch, so tenderly.

Then, as he praised you with a mind made clear and awake, you understood his heart and said: “Enjoy the kingdom for a long time, Dhruva, and then attain the highest realm of all, the Pole Star, from which there is no return.”

Ityuchishi tvayi gate nripanandanosavananditakhilajano nagarimupetah, reme chiram bhavadanugrahapurnakamastate gate cha vanamadritarajyabharah.

When you had said this and gone, the prince returned to the city, to the joy of all the people. His wishes fulfilled by your grace, he lived happily for a long time, and when his father retired to the forest he took up the burden of the kingdom.

Yakshena deva nihate punaruttamesmin yakshaih sa yuddhanirato virato manuktya, shantya prasannahridayaddhanadadupetat tvadbhaktimeva sudridhamavrinonmahatma.

When his brother Uttama was killed by a Yaksha, he made war on the Yakshas, but stopped on Manu’s advice. Pleased by his restraint, Kubera came to him, and the great soul asked only for firm devotion to you.

At the end, carried by your attendants in a celestial chariot, he dwells joyfully with his mother in the Pole Star’s realm. You who are so eager to protect your servants, O Lord of Guruvayur, put an end to my flood of ailments.
