Shakrena samyati hatopi balirmahatma shukrena jivitatanuh kratuvardhitoshma, vikrantiman bhayanilinasuram trilokim chakre vashe sa tava chakramukhadabhitah.

Though slain by Indra in battle, the great-souled Bali was brought back to life by Shukra, and his power grew through sacrifices. Mighty and fearless even of the edge of your discus, he took control of the three worlds while the gods hid in fear.

Putrartidarshanavashadaditirvishanna tam kashyapam nijapatim sharanam prapanna, tvatpujanam taduditam hi payovratakhyam sa dvadashahamacharattvayi bhaktipurna.

Aditi, grieved to see her sons suffer, took refuge in her husband Kashyapa. Full of devotion to you, she kept for twelve days the worship he taught her, the vow of living on milk.

Tasyavadhau tvayi nilinamateramushyah shyamashchaturbhujavapuh svayamavirasih, namram cha tamiha bhavattanayo bhaveyam gopyam madikshanamiti pralapannayasih.

At its end, as her mind was lost in you, you yourself appeared, dark and four-armed. As she bowed, you told her, ‘I will be born here as your son; keep this vision of me secret,’ and left.

Tvam kashyape tapasi sannidadhattadanim praptosi garbhamaditeh pranuto vidhatra, prasuta cha prakatavaishnavadivyarupam sa dvadashishravanapunyadine bhavantam.

Then, entering through Kashyapa’s austerity, you came into Aditi’s womb, praised by Brahma; and she gave birth to you, showing your divine form as Vishnu, on the holy day of Dvadashi under the Shravana star.

Punyashramam tamabhivarshati pushpavarshairharshakule surakule kritaturyaghoshe, baddhvanjalim jaya jayeti nutah pitribhyam tvam tatkshane patutamam vaturupamadhah.

As the joyful gods rained flowers on that holy hermitage and sounded their trumpets, and your parents praised you with folded hands, crying ‘Victory, victory!’, that very moment you took the form of a bright young brahmin boy.

Tavatprajapatimukhairupaniya maunjidandajinakshavalayadibhirarchyamanah, dedipyamanavapurisha kritagnikaryastvam prasthitha baligriham prakritashvamedham.

Then, given the sacred thread by Prajapati and others, honoured with the grass girdle, staff, deerskin, rosary and the rest, your body blazing, Lord, after tending the sacred fire you set out for Bali’s house, where a horse sacrifice had begun.

Gatrena bhavimahimochitagauravam pragvyavrinvateva dharanim chalayannayasih, chhatram paroshmatiranarthamivadadhano dandam cha danavajaneshviva sannidhatum.

You walked shaking the earth with your body, as if showing in advance the weight of the greatness to come, holding an umbrella as if to ward off the enemy’s heat, and a staff as if to bring punishment to the demons.

Tam narmadottaratate hayamedhashalamasedushi tvayi rucha tava ruddhanetraih, bhasvankimesha dahano nu sanatkumaro yogi nu koyamiti shukramukhaih shashanke.

When you reached that hall of the horse sacrifice on the north bank of the Narmada, Shukra and the others, their eyes dazzled by your radiance, wondered: ‘Is this the sun, or fire, or Sanatkumara? What yogi is this?’

Anitamashu bhrigubhirmahasabhibhutaistvam ramyarupamasurah pulakavritangah, bhaktya sametya sukriti parinijya padau tattoyamanvadhrita murdhani tirthatirtham.

The Bhrigu priests, overwhelmed by your splendour, quickly brought you in. The virtuous demon king, thrilled all over, came to you with devotion, washed your feet, and placed that water, holiest of all holy waters, on his head.

Prahladavamshajataya kratubhirdvijeshu vishvasato nu tadidam ditijopi lebhe, yatte padambu girishasya shirobhilalyam sa tvam vibho gurupuralaya palayethah.

Whether because he was born in Prahlada’s line, or for his sacrifices and his faith in brahmins, even a son of Diti won this: the water of your feet, which Shiva cherishes on his head. Lord who dwell in Guruvayur, protect me.
