Pura hayagrivamahasurena shashthantarantodyadakandakalpe, nidronmukhabrahmamukhaddhriteshu vedeshvadhitsah kila matsyarupam.

Long ago, at the end of the sixth age of Manu, during an untimely dissolution, the great demon Hayagriva stole the Vedas from the mouth of Brahma as he drifted into sleep; then you chose to take the form of a fish.

Satyavratasya dramiladhibharturnadijale tarpayatastadanim, karanjalau sanjvalitakritistvamadrishyathah kashchana balaminah.

As Satyavrata, king of the Dravida land, was offering water to the ancestors in a river, you appeared in his cupped hands as a tiny fish with a glowing form.

Kshiptam jale tvam chakitam vilokya ninyenbupatrena munih svageham, svalpairahobhih kalashim cha kupam vapim sarashchanashishe vibho tvam.

Seeing you frightened when put back in the water, the sage-king took you home in a water pot. Within a few days, O Lord, you outgrew the pot, a well, a pond and a lake.

Yogaprabhavadbhavadajnayaiva nitastatastvam munina payodhim, prishtomuna kalpadidrikshumenam saptahamasveti vadannayasih.

Then, by his yogic power and at your bidding, the sage carried you to the ocean. When he asked to see the great flood, you told him, ‘Wait seven days,’ and went away.

Prapte tvaduktehani varidharapariplute bhumitale munindrah, saptarshibhih sardhamaparavarinyudghurnamanah sharanam yayau tvam.

On the day you named, when the earth was flooded by torrents of rain, the great sage, tossed about in the endless waters with the seven rishis, took refuge in you.

Dharam tvadadeshakarimavaptam naurupinimaruruhustada te, tatkampakampreshu cha teshu bhuyastvamambudheravirabhurmahiyan.

They climbed onto the earth, which came at your command in the shape of a boat. When they trembled as it rocked, you rose again from the ocean in a vast form.

Jhashakritim yojanalakshadirgham dadhanamuchchaistaratejasam tvam, nirikshya tushta munayastvaduktya tvattungashringe taranim babandhuh.

Seeing you as a fish a hundred thousand yojanas long, blazing with brilliance, the sages rejoiced, and at your word tied the boat to your tall horn.

Akrishtanauko munimandalaya pradarshayanvishvajagadvibhagan, samstuyamano nrivarena tena jnanam param chopadishannacharih.

Towing the boat, you showed the sages the regions of the whole world, and as that noble king praised you, you taught him the highest knowledge as you went.

Kalpavadhau sapta muninpurovatprasthapya satyavratabhumipam tam, vaivasvatakhyam manumadadhanah krodhaddhayagrivamabhidrutobhuh.

When the flood ended, you sent the seven sages back as before, made King Satyavrata the Manu called Vaivasvata, and rushed in anger at Hayagriva.

Svatungashringakshatavakshasam tam nipatya daityam nigamangrihitva, virinchaye pritahride dadanah prabhanjanagarapate prapayah.

You struck down the demon, his chest torn by your tall horn, took back the Vedas and gave them to Brahma, whose heart rejoiced. O Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
