Sandranandatano hare nanu pura daivasure sangare tvatkritta api karmasheshavashato ye te na yata gatim, tesham bhutalajanmanam ditibhuvam bharena durardita bhumih prapa virinchamashritapadam devaih puraivagataih.

Hari, whose body is pure bliss: the demons you slew long ago in the war of gods and demons, who had not reached liberation because of their remaining karma, were born on earth. Weighed down by them, the Earth, deeply troubled, went to Brahma, where the gods had already come for refuge.

Ha ha durjanabhuribharamathitam pathonidhau patukametam palaya hanta me vivashatam samprichchha devaniman, ityadiprachurapralapavivashamalokya dhata mahim devanam vadanani vikshya parito dadhyau bhavantam hare.

‘Alas, crushed by the heavy load of the wicked, I am about to sink into the ocean; save me! Ask these gods how helpless I am.’ Seeing the Earth helpless with such laments, Brahma looked at the faces of the gods around him and meditated on you, Hari.

Uche chambujabhuramunayi surah satyam dharitrya vacho nanvasya bhavatam cha rakshanavidhau daksho hi lakshmipatih, sarve sharvapurassara vayamito gatva payovaridhim natva tam stumahe javaditi yayuh sakam tavaketanam.

Brahma said: ‘Gods, what the Earth says is true, and the lord of Lakshmi is the one able to protect her and you. Let all of us, with Shiva leading, go to the ocean of milk, bow to him and quickly sing his praise.’ So they went together to your abode.

When they reached the shore of the milk ocean, with its gentle breeze, and gathered there, minds fixed only on your feet, Brahma heard your words in his heart and, delighting them all, said: ‘The Supreme Self himself has spoken to me; hear his words.’

Jane dinadashamaham divishadam bhumeshcha bhimairnripaistatkshepaya bhavami yadavakule soham samagratmana, deva vrishnikule bhavantu kalaya devanganashchavanau matsevarthamiti tvadiyavachanam pathojabhuruchivan.

‘I know the miserable state of the gods, and of the Earth under cruel kings. To end it I myself will be born, in my fullness, in the Yadava clan. Let the gods be born with a portion of themselves in the Vrishni clan, and the celestial women on earth, to serve me.’ These were your words, as Brahma told them.

Hearing your words, so sweet to the ear, they all departed with peaceful hearts, Lord, filled with the nectar of your grace. Then in the famous city of Mathura, made holier by your coming presence, King Vasudeva, son of Shura, married the blessed Devaki, daughter of Devaka.

After the wedding, her brother Kamsa, to honour the couple, drove their chariot. On the way your voice rang from the sky: ‘Her eighth son will kill you, wicked one.’ Terrified, he drew a sharp sword to kill the slender bride beside him.

The wicked one seized her by the hair and would not let go despite Vasudeva’s long pleading; only when promised their sons did he relent and go home. Even your first-born brother, when handed over, he spared out of affection. Even in the wicked, Lord, a kind thought sometimes appears.

Then, by your will, the sage Narada told the king of the Bhojas: ‘You are demons and the Yadavas are gods; don’t you know, my lord? That magician Hari will be born to kill you, at the gods’ request.’ Hearing this, Kamsa harassed the Yadavas and killed Vasudeva’s sons.

When Shesha, lord of serpents, became the seventh child and by your will was carried by Maya to Rohini, then you too, Madhava, the one essence of being, awareness and bliss, entered Devaki’s womb, praised by the gods. Krishna, shake off my many illnesses and grant me supreme devotion.
