Before creation, at the great dissolution, nothing of this world, manifest or unmanifest, existed; maya, its changes stilled by the balance of the three qualities, had merged into you. There was no death and no immortality, no day and no night; you alone remained, as the light of supreme bliss.

Time, karma, the qualities, the countless souls and the universe as effect, Lord, all dissolved into you as you rested in the joy of conscious play. Yet they are not said to have ceased, for they remained as latent power; otherwise, how could they arise again, any more than flowers from the sky?

When the span of two parardhas had passed and you cast a glance full of the wish to create, maya herself stirred to become the three worlds. From maya arose the power of time, the unseen karma of all beings and their inborn nature, and these unfolded the qualities and aided her work.

Near maya but not entering it, you are called the Witness; entering it as a reflection through its many divisions, you are the individual soul, no other than you. Then maya, awakened by time and the rest and impelled by you, created the principle of intellect, called Mahat, the Great.

That Mahat, though made of the three qualities, is mostly pure goodness, and awakens in the soul the simple sense ‘I am’. Then, by your impulse, Vishnu, Mahat produced the ego, which gives the sense of ‘I’ as distinct, nourished by the three qualities and heavy with inertia.

Following the three qualities, that ego became threefold: of goodness, of passion and of inertia. Through its first part, of goodness, it created the gods who preside over the senses and faculties: the directions, wind, sun, Varuna, the Ashvins, fire, Indra, Vishnu, Mitra, the moon, Brahma, Rudra and others.

Infinite Lord, by your power that part of goodness created the inner instrument, with its functions of mind, intellect, ego and memory. From the part of passion came the ten senses; and from its part of inertia, by your power, Lord of Guruvayur, came sound, the subtle essence of space.

From sound you created space, Lord; then touch, and from it wind; from wind form, and from form fire; then taste and water, smell and earth. So, Madhava, each holding the qualities of those before it, you brought forth this whole group of elements from the ego of inertia.

These elements, senses and gods, born separately, could not on their own build the cosmic egg. Praised by them with many hymns, you entered these principles, stirred in them the power to act, joined them together and made the golden egg.

That egg lay for a thousand years in the waters made before; breaking it open, you took the cosmic form called Virat, made of the fourteen worlds. With thousands of hands, feet and heads, as the soul of every being, you shine forth. Lord of Guruvayur, save me from all illness.
