Kadachidgopalan vihitamakhasambharavibhavan nirikshya tvam shaure maghavamadamudhvamsitumanah, vijanannapyetan vinayamridu nandadipashupanaprichchhah ko vayam janaka bhavatamudyama iti.

Once, seeing the cowherds gathering lavish provisions for a sacrifice, you, intent on humbling Indra’s pride, asked Nanda and the elders gently and humbly, though you knew already: ‘Father, what is all this preparation for?’

Babhashe nandastvam suta nanu vidheyo maghavato makho varshe varshe sukhayati sa varshena prithivim, nrinam varshayattam nikhilamupajivyam mahitale visheshadasmakam trinasalilajiva hi pashavah.

Nanda told you: ‘Son, the sacrifice to Indra must be held every year; he gladdens the earth with rain. Everything people live on depends on rain, and we most of all, for our cattle live on grass and water.’

Iti shrutva vacham piturayi bhavanaha sarasam dhigetanno satyam maghavajanita vrishtiriti yat, adrishtam jivanam srijati khalu vrishtim samuchitam maharanye vrikshah kimiva balimindraya dadate.

Hearing your father, you answered charmingly: ‘Nonsense! It isn’t true that rain comes from Indra. The unseen karma of living beings brings the fitting rain. What offering do the trees in the great forest give to Indra?’

Idam tavat satyam yadiha pashavo nah kuladhanam tadajivyayasau balirachalabhartre samuchitah, surebhyopyutkrishta nanu dharanidevah kshititale tatastepyaradhya iti jagaditha tvam nijajanan.

‘This much is true: our cattle are our family’s wealth, so it is fitting to make the offering to the mountain that sustains them. And on earth the brahmins are higher even than the gods, so they too should be honoured.’ So you told your people.

Bhavadvacham shrutva bahumatiyutastepi pashupa dvijendranarchanto balimadaduruchchaih kshitibhrite, vyadhuh pradakshinyam subhrishamanamannadarayutastvamadah shailatma balimakhilamabhirapuratah.

Hearing you, the cowherds, full of respect, honoured the brahmins and made grand offerings to the mountain; they walked around it reverently and bowed low; and you, taking the form of the mountain, ate the whole offering before their eyes.

Avochashchaivam tan kimiha vitatham me nigaditam girindro nanvesha svabalimupabhunkte svavapusha, ayam gotro gotradvishi cha kupite rakshitumalam samastanityukta jahrishurakhila gokulajushah.

And you said to them: ‘Was anything I said untrue? This king of mountains eats his offering in his own body. This mountain can protect us all even if Indra, enemy of mountains, is angry.’ Hearing this, all of Gokula rejoiced.

Pariprita yatah khalu bhavadupeta vrajajusho vrajam yavat tavannijamakhavibhangam nishamayan, bhavantam janannapyadhikarajasakrantahridayo na sehe devendrastvaduparachitatmonnatirapi.

As the delighted people of Vraja went home with you, Indra heard that his sacrifice had been stopped. Though he knew who you were, his heart was gripped by passion and he could not bear it, though it was you who had raised him to his high place.

Manushyatvam yato madhubhidapi deveshvavinayam vidhatte chennashtastridashasadasam kopi mahima, tatashcha dhvamsishye pashupahatakasya shriyamiti pravrittastvam jetum sa kila maghava durmadanidhih.

‘If even Vishnu, slayer of Madhu, having become human, can insult the gods, the gods’ glory is gone. So I will destroy that wretched cowherd’s prosperity.’ So Indra, a storehouse of arrogance, set out to defeat you.

Sending the clouds of the world’s end into the sky to destroy your home, wielding his thunderbolt and riding his cloud-elephant, he set out, while fire, wind and others laughed at him inwardly. Lord of the three worlds, whom does your maya not delude?

Reassuring the cowherds, ‘Even if Indra is angry, we are surely safe by the brahmins’ kindness and the mountain’s grace,’ you waited, thinking, ‘Why hasn’t the mountain-breaker come yet?’ Lord of Guruvayur, enemy of Mura, drive away my illnesses.
