O Lord, we meditate on your form adorned for the rasa dance: peacock feathers spread in your hair, makara earrings swaying, lovely with strings of pearls and a forest garland, rich with the scent of sandal, a golden girdle over yellow silk and anklets bright with jewels.

When the young women had dressed and adorned themselves, jewelled earrings swaying on their cheeks, and formed a circle, you, lover of Lakshmi, lotus-navelled one, moved between every pair of them and began the lovely rasa dance.

O Vasudeva, hearing from Narada of the shining delight of your rasa dance, the gods, eager and curious, came at once from heaven into the sky, surrounded by hundreds of their wives, lovely in dress, ornaments and grace.

Worship that splendour of the rasa dance: the flute’s melody, sweet songs matched to raga and rhythm, soft steps keeping time, bangles jingling, lotus hands resting again and again on shoulders, and garments swaying at the hips.

As the dance went on, with high sweet notes of songs sung with devotion and jewelled ornaments swaying with every graceful move, the gods joyfully showered flowers and, with their wives, were spellbound, as if merging into you, who are pure consciousness.

Then one cowherd girl, her slender body tired and damp with sweat, her eyes half-closed with weariness, leaned on your lovely shoulder. Another, her hair loosened, slyly kissed your arm, fragrant with fresh sandal and thrilled with joy.

Another, rich in merit, laid her cheek with its swaying earring against yours and received the nectar of the betel you were chewing. Having found you in the dance, the beauty of the world and Lakshmi’s own playground, what ecstasy did those women not reach?

O Lord, slowly the singing stopped and the instruments fell silent; overwhelmed by the bliss of Brahman, the women simply danced. They did not notice their loosened garments, hair or bodices; even the stars stood still in the sky. What more can I say?

Then, all-pervading Lord, having melted the world in the height of joy, you ended the dance. Moved by their merit, you took as many forms as there were cowherd women, glowing with fresh sweat from the play and unable to bear their longing, and gave them the supreme festival of love.

O Lord, with those women, tired from the different games and lovingly cherished, you played freely and beautifully in the waters of the Yamuna. And in the forest, lovely with cool young breezes and fragrant with flowers, you sported, enchanting hundreds of them.

So on those nights, treasure of beauty, you let the women taste an ocean of complete bliss that only yogis reach, and made even Brahma, Shiva and the others honour the cowherd women. Lovely Krishna, whose form devotees can reach, protect me.
