In the morning, at the word of the frightened Bhoja king Kamsa, the wrestling drums began; the kings went to their seats, Nanda went to his place, and Kamsa climbed to his tower. Then you too, handsomely dressed, came with Balarama and your friends to the arena gate, where the enraged elephant Kuvalayapida stood.

“Most wicked one, get out of the way at once!” you said. Driven on by its harsh, angry driver, the elephant charged faster and seized you. Slipping free in play, you struck its head, which had long rivalled the gopis’ pitcher-like breasts, hid between its feet, and came out again laughing sweetly.

Within reach yet out of reach, like the Lord to sages, you ran about playing, brought the great elephant down, and as it charged again, tore out its tusk by the root while it was still alive. You gave the great pearls from its base to your friend, saying, “Make a lovely necklace of these and give it to Radhika.”

As you entered the arena with Balarama, the tusk on your shoulder, the people, their hearts and eyes stolen by your graceful movements, all exclaimed: “How blessed is Nanda! No, the cowherd women! No, Yashoda! No, no: it is we, with eyes to see this, who are the most blessed in the three worlds!”

You, the complete Brahman itself, dense with the light of boundless supreme bliss, had sported among the cowherds and were not yet known to many people. Now, seeing you for the first time on this holy occasion, the crowds, filled with joy and freed of sin, sang with feeling of the deeds of yours they had heard about.

Then, at the king’s word, Chanura, the champion wrestler, and Mushtika, mighty with his fists, faced you and Balarama, and a rough fight of rapid blows began. Leave aside the many holds, throws and pulls of that fight; the wonder was that the chief wrestler was bound and freed many times before his death.

As people cried, “Alas, shame! These are tender boys, and the wrestlers so harsh; we can’t watch, let us leave,” you whirled Chanura in your hands until his life left him and dashed him to the ground. Mushtika was crushed by Balarama, and the remaining wrestlers ran for their lives.

The wicked Kamsa, at a loss, stopped the music and ordered that your noble fathers be killed and that you, who pervade all, be driven far away. Angered by his evil words, you leapt onto his platform like Garuda onto a mountain and forcibly seized Kamsa, son of Ugrasena, though he was hard to catch as he swung his raised sword.

You threw the king to the ground, his joints crushed at once, and as you fell on top of him, a rain of flowers from the gods fell on you. What can we say? Always absorbed in you, even through fear, he attained union with you. O Supreme One, this was the deep wish of his past life as Kalanemi, to die by your hand.

Quickly crushing his eight brothers, you bowed to your parents, made Ugrasena king, and delighted the whole Yadu clan by fulfilling their wishes. Gaining as your friend Uddhava, best of devotees, who learned statecraft from Brihaspati, you were content in the city. Lord of Guruvayur, stop all my illnesses.
