Then you went to the sage Sandipani and, all-knowing as you are, learned every art with Balarama in just sixty-four days. As the teacher’s fee you brought back his lost son from Yama’s realm and gave him to him, and returned to your city, sounding your conch Panchajanya.

Remembering again and again the lovely-eyed cowherd women, who were driven by the weight of their love, you too were overcome with compassion and sent Uddhava, also to show that dearest friend and finest devotee their overflowing devotion, rare in all the worlds.

Reaching Gokula in the evening, a place that spoke of your greatness, he delighted Nanda and Yashoda with news of you. In the morning, seeing the jewelled chariot, the lotus-eyed gopis grew anxious; hearing that your companion had come, they dropped their work and gathered round.

Seeing him, handsome in clothes and ornaments just like yours, and remembering again and again all your playful deeds, their voices choked; somehow they spoke in faltering words, forgetting courtesy and even the line between themselves and a stranger.

‘Good sir, were you sent for the sake of his parents by that heartless one? Where is he now, darling of the city women? Ah, Hari, our Lord, protect us! Which of us could ever forget your embraces, your nectar-sweet body, your kisses, our rapture and your teasing words, beloved?’

‘Ocean of compassion, enchanter of the world, show us even once, so we may hold it, your lovely body, tousled and graceful from the rasa dance, hair loosened, beaded with drops of sweat.’ So your beloveds cried out to you in the madness of love.

The gopis, distressed and speaking such helpless words, were brought back to calm by Uddhava with your messages full of wisdom. Then he spent some days happily with those joyful women, so absorbed in you, talking of all your doings.

Day and night, in every home, the housework went on to songs about you; only talk of you passed between them, and even their talk in sleep was of you; their gestures mostly copied yours. Seeing everything so full of you, Uddhava was lost in wonder.

‘I will come soon; I stay away only because of the weight of my duties. Don’t grieve, for in separation remembrance grows stronger. Soon you will reach the bliss of Brahman, where union and separation are the same.’ With these words of yours he freed them from sorrow.
