Tato magadhabhumrita chiranirodhasankleshitam shatashtakayutayutadvitayamisha bhumibhritam, anathasharanaya te kamapi purusham prahinodayachata sa magadhakshapanameva kim bhuyasa.

Then, Lord, twenty thousand eight hundred kings, suffering long captivity under Jarasandha, king of Magadha, sent a messenger to you, refuge of the helpless. He asked only for Jarasandha’s destruction; what more need be said?

Yiyasurabhimagadham tadanu naradodiritadyudhishthiramakhodyamadubhayakaryaparyakulah, viruddhajayinodhvaradubhayasiddhirityuddhave shashamsushi nijaih samam puramiyetha yaudhishthirim.

You wanted to march against Jarasandha, but then Narada told you of Yudhishthira’s plan for a great sacrifice, and you were torn between the two. When Uddhava advised that the sacrifice, which requires conquering rivals, would achieve both, you went with your people to Yudhishthira’s city.

Asheshadayitayute tvayi samagate dharmajo vijitya sahajairmahim bhavadapangasamvardhitaih, shriyam nirupamam vahannahaha bhaktadasayitam bhavantamayi magadhe prahitavansabhimarjunam.

When you arrived with all your wives, Yudhishthira, with his brothers strengthened by your glance, conquered the earth and gained matchless wealth. Then, ah, he sent you, who act as servant to your devotees, to Magadha along with Bhima and Arjuna.

The three of you went to the city of Girivraja and, disguised as Brahmins, asked Jarasandha for the gift of a duel. Seeing that his merit was not yet used up, you had him fight Bhima, while you and Arjuna stood by watching the royal combat.

When Jara’s son, fierce and tireless, would not stop fighting, you signalled by splitting a twig, and Bhima tore him in two. Then you joyfully freed the kings, blessed them with supreme devotion, and though they wanted nothing more, told them to rule the earth to protect dharma.

Then Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya sacrifice, thronged with kings who gladly served him, and you too, Lord of the world, washed the Brahmins’ feet and did other humble tasks. What more can be said of that great king’s good fortune?

Tatassavanakarmani pravaramagryapujavidhim vicharya sahadevavaganugatassa dharmatmajah, vyadhatta bhavate muda sadasi vishvabhutatmane tada sasuramanusham bhuvanameva triptim dadhau.

Then, in the course of the rite, Yudhishthira weighed who should receive the honour of first worship and, following Sahadeva’s words, joyfully offered it to you in the assembly, the Self of all beings; and the whole world, gods and humans alike, was satisfied.

At once Shishupala, king of Chedi, cried: “With sages and kings present, what fool honours this cowherd lad of ill repute?” Pouring out a stream of abuse at you, he leapt from his seat with weapon raised, and the Pandavas rushed at him.

Holding back those on your side, you yourself took off the head of that enemy facing you with your discus, the slayer of demons. His mind purified by thinking of you constantly through three births, he attained supreme oneness with you, which even yogis rarely reach.

Tatah sumahite tvaya kratuvare nirudhe jano yayau jayati dharmajo jayati krishna ityalapan, khalah sa tu suyodhano dhutamanassapatnashriya mayarpitasabhamukhe sthalajalabhramadabhramit.

When that great sacrifice, so honoured by you, was complete, people left saying, “Victory to Yudhishthira! Victory to Krishna!” But the wicked Duryodhana, his mind shaken by his rival’s wealth, stumbled about in the hall built by Maya, mistaking floor for water and water for floor.

Then the laughter of Draupadi and Bhima, which you quietly encouraged with a sidelong glance, sowed at once the seed for lifting the earth’s burden. Janardana, who dwells in Guruvayur, protect me from illness.
