Shalva, defeated by the Yadavas at Rukmini’s wedding, won the flying city Saubha from Shiva. While you were away among the Kurus, that sorcerer attacked your city. Pradyumna held him off with all the Yadava warriors and overpowered his fierce minister Dyuman; the battle raged for twenty-seven days.

  2. తావత్త్వం రామశాలీ త్వరితముపగతః ఖణ్డితప్రాయసైన్యం సౌభేశం తం న్యరున్ధాః స చ కిల గదయా శార్ఙ్గమభ్రంశయత్తే।

Then you came quickly with Balarama and checked the lord of Saubha, whose army was nearly destroyed. It is said his mace knocked the Sharnga bow from your hand, and he slew an illusory image of your father before you; some say even you were deceived for half a moment, but Vyasa himself rejected that view.

You smashed Saubha with your mace and hurled it into the ocean, and swiftly cut down Shalva with your discus. Then Dantavaktra charged and flung his mace at you; struck by your mace Kaumodaki, he too, rich in merit, became one with you like Shishupala. This incarnation was to free all who had long fixed their minds on you.

At the dice game in the Kuru court, you compassionately gave the captive, weeping Draupadi an endless line of garments. Later, when she called on you in fear because sage Durvasa, born of Shiva’s portion, had arrived after the food was gone, you came, ate a single leaf of greens, and left the whole band of sages in the forest satisfied.

When war was being planned, Arjuna chose you alone and Duryodhana got your army. You went to Hastinapura as the Pandavas’ envoy; when Duryodhana scorned your words, which Bhishma, Drona and the elders honoured, you revealed your cosmic form before the assembled sages, shook the city, and returned.

Krishna, you were Arjuna’s charioteer. At the start of battle, seeing the hero downcast, pitying the kin he must kill, you said: “What is this, friend? The Self is eternal and one. Who is killed here, and who kills? Give up this fear, offer yourself to me, and fight this righteous war.” Showing him your cosmic form, you restored him to himself.

Bhishma, crown of devotees, devoted only to your work of easing the earth’s burden, was slaying ten thousand kings each day and Arjuna was faltering. You broke your vow not to take up arms, seized your discus and ran at him in anger; seeing him bow his head with joined palms, you turned back in joy.

In Drona’s battle you took on your own chest the Vaishnava weapon hurled by Bhagadatta from his elephant. You hid the sun with your discus to help bring down Jayadratha, king of Sindhu. When Karna loosed the serpent weapon, you pressed the earth down so that only Arjuna’s crown was cut, and saved him. What did you not do for the Pandavas?

As the war began, Balarama went on pilgrimage. At Naimisha he slew the bard who did not rise to greet him, then set the bard’s son in his place; on the festival day he crushed Balvala, destroyer of sacrifices. After bathing at holy places he arrived at the war’s end, saw that Bhima and Duryodhana’s duel could not be stopped, and went to your city.

Ashwatthama, his mind ruined by killing Draupadi’s sleeping sons, was caught; at your word Arjuna withdrew the Brahma weapon and took the jewel from his head. When the weapon then entered Uttara’s womb to end the Pandava line, you, Lord with the discus, entered that womb, thumb-sized, to protect the child.

Bhishma, who could choose his hour of death, taught Yudhishthira the whole of dharma, and gazing at you, through the fullness of his devotion, at once merged into the formless Brahman. Then, after having Yudhishthira perform three glorious horse sacrifices and fulfilling his wishes, you returned to Dwaraka. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from all illness.
