Earlier, hearing that you had brought back your teacher’s son, your mother longed to see her own six sons. At her word you went to Sutala, were worshipped by Bali, and brought back those sons, once Marichi’s sons, cursed by Brahma to be born to Hiranyakashipu and then to Vasudeva and killed by Kamsa; you showed them to her and led them to your own abode.

Wishing to bless at once the famed Brahmin Shrutadeva and King Bahulashva, both full of devotion, you went to Mithila with a group of sages.

Taking two forms, you went to both their homes at once; one served you with great riches, the other with fruit and rice gathered that day. You were equally pleased with both and gave them liberation.

Again, in Dwaraka, saying ‘Who can stop fate?’, you who carry the whole world bore a Brahmin’s grief at his son’s death. I think it was to humble Arjuna’s pride and, by showing him the supreme abode, to fix on the truth his mind, dulled by seeing you as merely human.

Eight of the Brahmin’s sons died, and as you seemed indifferent, people spoke harshly. Then Arjuna came to Dwaraka; staying there as your friend, he heard the Brahmin wailing at his ninth son’s death and vowed, ‘If I do not bring the son back, I will enter fire.’

Proud, without asking you, he went to the Brahmin’s house and sealed the birth room with nets of arrows and great weapons; yet again the baby vanished as soon as it was seen. He searched the realms of Yama, Indra and the other gods, and, his effort in vain, was about to leap into the fire when you, smiling, stopped him.

With him you raced west in a swift chariot, passed beyond the Lokaloka mountain, and cut through the deep darkness with the light of your discus. To Arjuna, his eyes dazzled by its rays, you said, ‘Look, look,’ and showed him, beyond the waters, your realm far beyond all darkness.

There, with your dear friend, O Supreme Self, you bowed to yourself: seated on the serpent king’s couch, adorned with divine ornaments and weapons, in yellow robes, your splendid body dark as a fresh cloud; the supreme ruler of the three divine forms, the one meaning of the Vedas, the form of all well-being.

‘You two are none other than me, divided into two by my showing and hiding; to see you here, I myself took the Brahmin’s sons. Take them back quickly.’ Receiving them, you returned them to the Brahmin, while Arjuna sang your greatness.

So, delighting the world with many pastimes, nourishing the Vrishni clan, performing many sacrifices and pleasing your doe-eyed queens with matchless play, you, the complete Brahman itself, came down on the pretext of easing the earth’s burden, to free those devoted to your lotus feet, and shone among the Yadus in human form.

Narada, melting with love for you, then stayed mostly in Dwaraka, and from him your father, rich in merit, gained knowledge of the truth. And wise Uddhava, foremost of devotees, received the essence of wisdom from you; they say he lives even now at Badari for the good of the people.

Victory to your incarnation as Krishna, O Lord, in which beings of every world, through matchless and effortless paths such as friendship, fear, affection, hatred and love, crossed all suffering and reached the immortal state. O Lord of Guruvayur, be with us to end the world’s pain and to fulfil our devotion.
