Lord of Lakshmi, I know why your devotees do not gain wealth at once here: in those without self-control it breeds pride. You first give them inner peace and then grant every wish quickly, and for those at peace there is no talk of falling from you.

O Lord, some worship Brahma, Shiva and the others, who are quickly pleased and quickly angered, each according to their own nature. Alas, through short-sightedness they fall. The demon Vrika is a clear example of this.

Once Vrika, son of Shakuni, asked Narada which god is quickly pleased. Narada told him to worship Shiva, the lord of the mountain, and not you, for you are no friend to the wicked.

After harsh penance, angry on the seventh day, he began cutting off his head, and at once Shiva, destroyer of the cities, appeared before him. From the lord of the world he chose a vile and terrible boon: death for anyone on whose head he placed his hand. Where is good sense in those turned away from you?

Then, like a lion let loose, he rushed at Rudra, who had granted the boon. Afraid of the demon, Shiva fled in every direction, looking back over his shoulder. As the whole world stood silent and Shiva was about to reach your abode, you appeared far ahead before the demon in the form of a clever young brahmin student.

“Good luck to you, son of Shakuni. Why do you run about now on the word of that ghoul? If you doubt what I say, my friend, why not put your finger on your own head?” Fooled by your words, he put his hand on his head and fell like a felled tree. So those who worship others fall; even for the trident-bearer, you alone are the refuge.

The sages living by the Sarasvati sent Bhrigu to find out which of the three gods had the most sattva. When he showed disrespect, Brahma flared up but held back his anger, and Shiva wanted to kill him but was restrained by Parvati. Then Bhrigu came to you.

When the brahmin kicked you, lotus-eyed one, as you lay asleep in Lakshmi’s lap, you rose up gladly and said, “Forgive everything, best of sages. May the mark of your foot always be my ornament here.”

Vishnu, at the start of creation the Vedas praised you like court bards; your form is being, consciousness, supreme bliss and oneness. All-pervading Supreme Self, the treasure of the cowherd women’s good fortune, Lord who dwells in Guruvayur, I worship you to end my sufferings.
