Knowing that the Vedas describe all actions as meant not for their fruits, Lord, I do only those offered to you, which free one from bondage. May my mind, deeds and words never turn to what the Vedas forbid; and if some unavoidable wrong does happen, I offer that too to you, the light of consciousness.

The other path of action is your worship: imagining your chosen form, lovely and pure, in stone, in the heart, in clay or anywhere, and offering it daily, as best I can, flowers, fragrance and food made pure by devotion. O Lord, may I gain your grace this way.

Those kept from hearing your stories deserve compassion; but I grieve for those born in priestly families, close to your feet, yet restless. Worshipping only for a living, deaf to you though you are praised everywhere, proud of learning and birth, what wrong do they not do? Do not make me like them.

In the Krita age people please you, white in colour and in the form of a great sage, through austerity; in Treta they worship you, red in colour, as sacrifice itself, marked with the sacred ladles; in Dvapara they serve you, dark, with shining discus and mace, through tantric rites; and here in the Kali age people worship you, blue, by chanting your names.

Even those born in earlier ages long to be born in Kali. Lord, do not let us, born here by good fortune, be cheated by the poisonous sweetness of sense pleasures.

In Kali, devotees will be found in the Tamil land, and in great numbers along the Kaveri, the Tamraparni, the holy Kritamala and the west-flowing river. Ah Lord, I too was born here and have some taste of you; do not bind me with ropes of desire and make me wander, but fulfil my service to you.

Seeing Kali, pitiless enemy of dharma, King Parikshit drew his sword to kill him but spared him, knowing his one virtue: in this age service to you bears fruit quickly while evil intentions do not, and Kali fears your devotees. But where he first steals people away through illness and the like, ah, teach him a lesson.

Whoever takes refuge in you with his whole being, leaving all other duties, is no longer a debtor or servant to gods, sages or ancestors, O infinite one; dwelling in his heart, you remove even the wrongs he may do. So, Lord of Guruvayur, stop my sufferings born of sin and lead me to devotion.
