By your compassion, may I give up attachment to family, rest my mind in you, renounce everything and wander, seeing the whole world as the play of maya. Judging good and bad comes from the sense of difference born of delusion; for one whose mind rests in you, free of that sense, what rules of “do” and “don’t” remain?

There are countless creatures whose minds are set only on easing hunger and thirst. Among them the human, gifted with understanding, is best, and human birth is rare. Even then one can be one’s own friend or enemy: whoever fixes the mind on you and remembers the way to end suffering is their own friend; anyone else is their own enemy.

When your compassion is at work, Lord, who in this world is not a teacher? The earth, trampled by all, does not waver; from her may I learn true patience. From the wind, Lord, may I learn to stay unattached amid the senses’ objects, and from my teacher the sky, may I see that my Self pervades all and is touched by nothing.

Like water may I be clear, purifying and sweet; like fire, though I take in everything, may I take on no fault; and as fire lies hidden in wood, may I see myself in all beings. As the moon’s phases wax and wane, may I know that growth and decline belong to the body, not the Self; and like the one sun reflected in many waters, by your grace may I know the one Self in all bodies.

May I not be like the pigeon who, out of love, died grieving for his young caught by the hunter. Like the python may I eat what comes and bear even hunger; like the ocean may I be deep. May I not fall for women and the like as the moth falls into flame. Like the bee may I take only the essence, but, Lord, may I not perish like the bee by hoarding.

May I not be caught by a young woman as an elephant is lured by a she-elephant; may I not pile up wealth, for others take what is stored, as the honey-gatherer takes the bee’s. Like the deer may I not be lured by worldly songs; like the fish on the hook may I not cling to food. Like Pingala, may I sleep in peace, free of expectation; and like the osprey, Lord, may I not be attacked for clinging to what others want.

Like a little child may I live happily, free of pride, and wander alone. Like the single bangle left on a maiden’s wrist, Lord, may I shun noisy company. With my mind on you, like the arrow-maker who never noticed a king’s procession, may I notice nothing else. And like a snake, may I live in homes made by others, like a rat’s hole.

From the spider may I learn that you bring forth the world from yourself and take it back into yourself. From the wasp may I firmly learn that thinking of you makes one like you. And the body, which ends as dung or ash, is the best teacher: reflected on, it gives discernment and detachment; mine especially, afflicted by so many illnesses.

Alas, alas! Lord of Guruvayur, free me from attachment to this body, for whose sake people, swept away by love of home, wealth, wife and the rest, forget your feet. In the end it belongs to fire or to dogs, and even now the eyes, ears, skin, tongue and the rest drag it helplessly this way and that; none draws it to your lotus feet.

If attachment to the body cannot be stopped even now, then, lotus-eyed Lord, remove all my illnesses and make my devotion to your lotus feet unshakeable. Having surely gained, after many births, this human body that can win liberation, do not, alas, throw it away on petty pleasures. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me.
