Source of the universe, in the beginning you took on the form of Hiranyagarbha, the sum of all souls; then, becoming the individual soul, you live wrapped in the gunas of Maya. There, through sattva grown strong and turned to devotion, you cut through the other two gunas, then let go of sattva too, and remain yourself, free of all limits.

O all-pervading one, even when sattva rises and one sees the flaws in sense pleasures, the pull towards them returns and is hard to stop when tamas and rajas surge. Mind and gunas are bound up together; to restrain them all, you said in the form of the Swan, single devotion to you, the fourth state beyond them, is the refuge.

Krishna, there are many paths to good laid down for people of action according to their tastes, and they lead to many destinations with small, passing joys. But to your friend Uddhava you declared devotion alone the greatest good. How could the pleasure of those who chase the senses equal the joy of devotion to you?

For one whose mind is content with devotion to you, who lives happily here free of longing, every direction is full of joy, as for one in a pool every side is water. Such a person does not want Indra’s heaven, Brahma’s realm or the charms of yogic powers; never mind those, he is indifferent even to the bliss of liberation when it comes on its own.

Even if your devotee is troubled by sense pleasures because the senses are not yet calm, those weakened pleasures, overpowered by devotion, cannot defeat him. Just as a blazing fire burns up a great heap of wood, so the flood of devotion to you burns up sin; where then is the arrogance of the senses?

Without the heart melting, the body thrilling and tears of joy, how can the mind become pure? What use are great austerities or learning to one without devotion? The soul, polished again and again with the healing ointment of tasting your stories, sees subtle truth as a cleansed eye sees, not through millions of practised arguments.

Let me practise meditation on you: seated comfortably with body straight, eyes resting on the tip of the nose, breath mastered by inhaling and the rest. I will picture the downward-facing lotus of the heart turned upward, imagine the sun, moon and fire above it, and see you there, dark as a rain cloud, tender of limb.

I meditate on you: soft dark hair, shining makara earrings, glowing with a gentle smile, lovely with the Kaustubha gem, the forest garland and long necklaces, marked with the Shrivatsa, with fine arms, a soft and lovely waist, golden garments, graceful thighs and tender lotus feet.

O Lord, holding my mind again and again with growing delight on each of your limbs, I will then fix it on one place, your lovely lotus face with its gentle smile. Letting my mind dissolve there into the form of supreme bliss, consciousness and oneness, and thinking of nothing else, may I become firmly established in yoga.

When meditation on you is mastered, the eight powers such as becoming tiny, and others like hearing from afar, may come rushing, each trying to be first, O Murari. I care for none of this, for it only delays reaching you. I long for you alone, full of bliss. Lord of Guruvayur, protect me from every suffering.
