O Hara, if praise from one who does not know the far shore of your greatness falls short, then even the words of Brahma and the gods fall short of you. So no one can be blamed for praising you as far as their mind reaches, and my attempt at this hymn is blameless too.

Your greatness lies beyond the reach of speech and mind; even the Vedas describe it with awe, only by saying what it is not. Who can praise it? How many qualities does it have, and who can grasp it? Yet whose mind and words do not turn to your form that has come close to us?

O Brahman, you created the Vedas, words sweet as honey, the supreme nectar; how could even the speech of Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, amaze you? Still, O destroyer of the three cities, I have resolved to purify my speech by the merit of telling your virtues.

Your sovereignty creates, sustains and dissolves the world; the three Vedas speak of it, divided among three forms that differ by their gunas. Yet, giver of boons, some dull-witted people raise loud arguments to refute it, which please the unworthy but are truly unpleasing.

“With what desire, what body, what means, what support and what material does the creator make the three worlds?” Such pointless reasoning about you, whose power is beyond reasoning, sets some foolish minds chattering, only to confuse the world.

Ajanmano lokah kimavayavavantopi jagatamadhishthataram kim bhavavidhiranadritya bhavati, anisho va kuryadbhuvanajanane kah parikaro yato mandastvam pratyamaravara samsherata ime.

Can the worlds, which have parts, be unborn? Can creation happen without a lord over the worlds? And if no lord made them, what means could there be for making them? O best of gods, it is because they are dull that such people doubt you.

The Vedas, Sankhya, Yoga, the Pashupata and Vaishnava paths: people follow different paths, straight or winding, by taste, each saying “this is best, that is right.” Yet you are the one goal of them all, as the ocean is of all rivers.

A great bull, a skull-topped staff, an axe, a hide, ashes, snakes and a skull: these alone are your possessions, giver of boons. Yet the gods enjoy riches granted by a mere glance of your brow, for one who delights in the Self is not lured by the mirage of sense objects.

Some say the whole world is eternal, others that it is fleeting, others that it is both in different ways. Bewildered by all these views, O destroyer of the cities, I am not ashamed to praise you; such boldness is just my chattering.

When you stood as a pillar of fire, Brahma went up and Vishnu went down, striving to find the limit of your glory, and could not. Then, when they praised you with deep faith and devotion, you appeared to them yourself, O Girisha. Does serving you ever fail to bear fruit?

Ravana, the ten-faced, easily made the three worlds free of enemies and still had arms itching for battle. This was the result of his firm devotion, O destroyer of Tripura, in which he offered his lotus-like heads one by one at your lotus feet.

Yet when he turned the strength of his forest of arms, gained by serving you, against Kailasa, your own home, you merely moved the tip of your toe and he found no footing even in the underworld. Surely the wicked, when they grow rich, lose their judgement.

Bana, who had the three worlds at his command like servants, outdid even Indra’s lofty wealth. That is no wonder, giver of boons, for he worshipped your feet. Whose head, bowed before you, does not rise high?

O three-eyed one, when gods and demons were terrified that the universe would end untimely, you mercifully drank the poison. The dark stain it left on your throat only adds to your beauty; even a flaw is praiseworthy in one devoted to ending the world’s fear.

Kama, the god of love, whose arrows never miss among gods, demons and humans, looked on you as just another god, and became a mere memory. Insulting those who have mastered themselves never ends well.

When you dance to protect the world, the earth shakes under your stamping feet, the stars are scattered by your swinging arms, and the heavens are troubled as your flying locks strike them. Truly, your mighty power is strange.

The river Ganga, which fills the sky and whose foam glitters with the stars, looks like a mere drop on your head; yet it shaped the earth into islands ringed by oceans. From this alone one can guess the greatness of your divine form.

The earth as your chariot, Brahma as charioteer, the king of mountains as bow, the sun and moon as wheels, Vishnu as the arrow: why all this display to burn Tripura, a mere straw? The Lord is not dependent on others; he simply plays with what is at his command.

Vishnu offered a thousand lotuses at your feet, and when one was missing he plucked out his own lotus eye. That surge of devotion became the discus, which now stands guard over the three worlds, O destroyer of Tripura.

When a sacrifice is over, you stay awake to give its fruit to those who performed it. How could an act that has passed bear fruit without the worship of the Lord? Seeing you as the guarantor of the fruit, people trust the Vedas and devote themselves firmly to ritual.

Daksha, skilled in ritual and lord of creatures, was the host; the great sages were priests and the gods were the assembly. Yet that sacrifice was ruined by you, giver of refuge. Surely, rites performed without faith only bring harm to the one who performs them.

O Lord, when Brahma, lord of creatures, lustfully pursued his own daughter, who had become a doe, taking the form of a stag, your hunter’s fury, bow in hand, chased him even into the sky, and still today, pierced by your arrow, he trembles before you.

Kama took up his bow, counting on Parvati’s beauty, and she saw him burned like straw before her. Even so, if the Goddess thinks you are won over by her because you gave her half your body, though you are steadfast in restraint, then young women are truly naive, giver of boons.

O destroyer of Kama, you play in cremation grounds, ghouls are your companions, you smear yourself with funeral ash and wear a garland of human skulls. Let your ways be inauspicious in every way; yet for those who remember you, giver of boons, you are the highest blessing.

Yogis, holding the breath and turning the mind inward, their hair standing on end and eyes filled with tears of joy, see a bliss within as if plunged into a lake of nectar. That inner reality they hold is surely you.

“You are the sun, the moon, the wind, the fire, the waters, the sky, the earth and the Self”: let the wise speak of you with such limited words. We do not know any reality here that you are not.

Giver of refuge, the sacred syllable Om names you: its three sounds A, U and M stand for the three Vedas, the three states of mind, the three worlds and the three gods; and its subtle resonance points to your fourth state beyond all change. It speaks of you both whole and in parts.

Bhava, Sharva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahadeva, Bhima and Ishana: the Vedas dwell on each of these eight names of yours. To you, the beloved abode, I offer my salutations.

Salutations to you, nearest and farthest, lover of solitude; to you, smallest and greatest, destroyer of Kama; to you, oldest and youngest, three-eyed one. Salutations to Sharva, who is all, beyond “this” and “that”.
