Dakshinamurthy Stotram
ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮೂರ್ತಿ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಮ್
The Sanskrit text in Kannada script. The Roman line and the meaning are the same as in the original.

I praise Dakshinamurthy: young, revealing the truth of the supreme Brahman through silent teaching, surrounded by elderly disciples, sages steeped in Brahman; the greatest of teachers, his hand in the sign of knowledge, bliss in form, content in his own Self, his face full of joy.

I bow to Lord Dakshinamurthy, seated on the ground beneath a banyan tree, giving knowledge to all the sages gathered near him; teacher of the three worlds, able to cut away the pain of birth and death.
ಚಿತ್ರಂ ವಟತರೋರ್ಮೂಲೇ ವೃದ್ಧಾಃ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾ ಗುರುರ್ಯುವಾ।

How wonderful: under the banyan tree the disciples are old and the guru is young. The guru teaches in silence, and the disciples’ doubts are gone.

Om. Salutations to him who is the meaning of Om, whose only form is pure knowledge; salutations to Dakshinamurthy, the spotless and serene.

The world lies within, like a city seen in a mirror, yet through maya it seems to be outside, as in a dream; on waking one sees only one’s own Self, without a second. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Like the sprout within a seed, this world was at first without form; then, made varied by space, time and change conjured by maya, he unfolds it at will, like a magician or a great yogi. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

His light alone, which is real, shines as this world of passing appearances. Through the Vedic words ‘You are That’ he teaches those who come to him, and one who realises him never returns to the ocean of birth. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

His knowledge, like the light of a great lamp inside a pot with many holes, streams out through the eyes and other senses. Only when he shines as ‘I know’ does this whole world shine after him. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Some debaters, no wiser than children or the blind, take the body, the breath, the senses, the restless intellect or the void to be ‘I’, and are badly deluded. He destroys this great delusion spun by the play of maya. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Like the sun or moon eclipsed by Rahu, in deep sleep a person is covered by maya, the senses withdrawn, and remains as pure being; on waking he recognises, ‘I was asleep.’ To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Through childhood and every age, through waking and every state, as they all change, the ‘I’ shines within, ever constant. He reveals this Self to his devotees through the blessed sign of knowledge. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

In dream or waking, whirled about by maya, one sees the world as divided: cause and effect, owner and owned, disciple and teacher, father and son. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Earth, water, fire, air, space, sun, moon and the living soul: this moving and unmoving world shines as his eightfold form. For those who reflect, nothing exists apart from that supreme, all-pervading Lord. To that guru, the glorious Dakshinamurthy, I bow.

Because this hymn makes clear that he is the Self of all, whoever hears it, reflects on its meaning, meditates on it and chants it gains, of their own accord, the lordship of being the Self of all, along with unhindered eightfold divine power.
