Om. I always take refuge in the form that is half Ambika and half Shiva, glowing like the bandhuka flower and gold, holding in its arms a lovely rosary, noose, goad and the sign of granting boons, adorned with the crescent moon, and three-eyed.

The king said:
Vichitramidamakhyatam bhagavan bhavata mama, devyashcharitamahatmyam raktabijavadhashritam.
Revered one, what a wonderful tale you have told me of the Goddess’s glory, the story of how Raktabija was slain.

I want to hear more: after Raktabija fell, what did Shumbha and the furious Nishumbha do?

The sage said:
Chakara kopamatulam raktabije nipatite, shumbhasuro nishumbhashcha hateshvanyeshu chahave.
When Raktabija and the others had been slain in battle, the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha flew into a boundless rage.

Hanyamanam mahasainyam vilokyamarshamudvahan, abhyadhavannishumbhotha mukhyayasurasenaya.
Seeing his great army being destroyed, Nishumbha, burning with fury, charged forward with the best of the demon forces.

In front of him, behind him and on both sides, great demons came on in anger, biting their lips, to kill the Goddess.

The mighty Shumbha too came, surrounded by his troops, to kill Chandika in his rage, after fighting the Mother goddesses.

Then a fierce battle broke out between the Goddess and Shumbha and Nishumbha, who rained arrows on her like two storm clouds pouring rain.

Chichchhedastanchharamstabhyam chandika svasharotkaraih, tadayamasa changeshu shastraughairasureshvarau.
Chandika cut down the arrows they shot with showers of her own, and struck the two demon lords on their bodies with a flood of weapons.

When her mount was struck, the Goddess swiftly cut through Nishumbha’s fine sword and his shield, marked with eight moons, with a razor-edged arrow.

With shield and sword broken, the demon hurled his spear; but as it flew at her, she split it in two with her discus.

Kopadhmato nishumbhotha shulam jagraha danavah, ayatam mushtipatena devi tachchapyachurnayat.
Swollen with rage, Nishumbha seized a trident; as it came, the Goddess smashed it to pieces with a blow of her fist.

Avidhyatha gadam sopi chikshepa chandikam prati, sapi devya trishulena bhinna bhasmatvamagata.
Then he whirled a mace and threw it at Chandika; struck by the Goddess’s trident, it too was reduced to ashes.

As that chief of demons came at her with an axe in hand, the Goddess struck him with a flood of arrows and brought him to the ground.

When his brother Nishumbha, of terrible valour, fell to the ground, Shumbha, wild with anger, rushed out to kill Ambika.

Standing tall in his chariot, his eight matchless arms raised high with mighty weapons, he seemed to fill the whole sky.

Tamayantam samalokya devi shankhamavadayat, jyashabdam chapi dhanushashchakarativa duhsaham.
Seeing him come, the Goddess blew her conch and twanged her bowstring with a sound almost too much to bear.

She filled every direction with the ringing of her bell, which drained the strength of the whole demon army.

Shumbha’s lion-like roar filled the three worlds, O king, but the terrible thunder of the Goddess overpowered it.
