He is truth, knowledge, infinite and eternal, beyond space yet the supreme space; he crawls restlessly in the cowherds’ yard, effortless yet tired from play; through maya he takes many forms, yet is formless and takes the form of the world; lord of Earth and Lakshmi, he has no lord. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

As a child he was frightened when Yashoda scolded, ‘Did you eat mud?’, and in his open mouth she saw all fourteen worlds. He is the central pillar of the three worlds, the light of the worlds yet unseen, lord of the worlds and supreme lord. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

He slays the mighty foes of heaven, removes the earth’s burden and cures the sickness of worldly life; he is liberation itself. He eats butter yet needs no food, and swallows the whole world; he shines in a pure mind yet is beyond all appearance, auspicious and utterly peaceful. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

He is Gopala, the lord who took a cowherd’s form in play, protector of his clan, who played with the gopis and held up Govardhan to shelter the cowherds; the cows themselves called him Govinda, yet he has many names, and he walks where the gopis can see him. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

He moves among the circle of gopis, seeming separate yet never separate; his beauty is always grey with the dust raised by the cows’ hooves. His bliss is won through faith and devotion; beyond thought, yet his true nature is found in meditation; his greatness is like the wish-fulfilling gem. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

He took the clothes of the women bathing in the river, climbed a tree, and drew them near when they came to ask for them back. Free of the grief and delusion of duality, he is awakened wisdom dwelling within the mind, whose body is pure existence. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

The beloved, cause of all causes, the first yet without beginning, dark as a rain cloud, who danced again and again on Kaliya’s heads in the Yamuna; he is time itself yet beyond time, knows all, destroys the faults of the Kali age, and moves past, present and future. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

I bow to him in the land of Vrindavan, worshipped by hosts of gods, whose gentle smile, pure as jasmine, is nectar and joy, the delight of his friends; whose blissful feet are honoured in the hearts of the great sages, an ocean of every worthy virtue. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.
