Ghushyate yasya nagare rangayatra dine dine, tamaham shirasa vande rajanam kulashekharam.

I bow my head to King Kulashekhara, in whose city a pilgrimage to Srirangam was proclaimed day after day.

Shrivallabheti varadeti dayapareti bhaktapriyeti bhavalunthanakovideti, natheti nagashayaneti jagannivasetyalapinam pratidinam kuru mam mukunda.

Mukunda, make me one who calls you every day: “Beloved of Lakshmi, giver of boons, full of mercy, lover of devotees, expert at breaking worldly bondage, Lord, who rests on the serpent, home of the universe.”

Jayatu jayatu devo devakinandanoyam jayatu jayatu krishno vrishnivamshapradipah, jayatu jayatu meghashyamalah komalango jayatu jayatu prithvibharanasho mukundah.

Victory, victory to this Lord, Devaki’s son! Victory, victory to Krishna, the lamp of the Vrishni clan! Victory, victory to the tender one, dark as a rain cloud! Victory, victory to Mukunda, who lifts the earth’s burden!

Mukunda murdhna pranipatya yache bhavantamekantamiyantamartham, avismritistvachcharanaravinde bhave bhave mestu bhavatprasadat.

Mukunda, bowing my head, I ask you for this one thing only: by your grace, in birth after birth, may I never forget your lotus feet.

Hari, I do not bow to your feet to be free of life’s opposites, nor to escape the dreadful hell of Kumbhipaka, nor to enjoy lovely women in heaven’s Nandana garden. In every birth, may I hold you in the home of my heart.

I have no interest in merit, in piles of wealth, or in enjoying pleasures. Lord, let whatever must happen happen as my past deeds deserve. This is the one prayer I hold dear: in birth after birth, may my devotion to your lotus feet stay unshaken.

Divi va bhuvi va mamastu vaso narake va narakantaka prakamam, avadhiritasharadaravindau charanau te maranepi chintayami.

Let me live in heaven, on earth, or even in hell, O destroyer of Naraka, as you wish. Even at death, may I think of your feet, which put the autumn lotus to shame.

Krishna tvadiyapadapankajapanjarantamadyaiva me vishatu manasarajahamsah, pranaprayanasamaye kaphavatapittaih kanthavarodhanavidhau smaranam kutaste.

Krishna, let the royal swan of my mind enter the cage of your lotus feet this very day. When life departs and my throat is choked with phlegm, wind and bile, how will I be able to remember you?

Chintayami harimeva santatam mandahasamuditananambujam, nandagopatanayam paratparam naradadimunivrindavanditam.

I think always of Hari alone: his lotus face glowing with a gentle smile, Nanda’s son, higher than the highest, worshipped by Narada and hosts of sages.

Karacharanasaroje kantimannetramine shramamushi bhujavichivyakulegadhamarge, harisarasi vigahyapiya tejojalaugham bhavamaruparikhinnah kleshamadya tyajami.

Hari is a lake whose lotuses are his hands and feet, whose fish are his shining eyes, rippling with the waves of his arms, unfathomably deep, washing away all weariness. Worn out by the desert of worldly life, I plunge in today, drink deep its waters of radiance, and leave my suffering behind.

O mind, never stop delighting in the lotus-eyed Lord who holds the conch and discus, the slayer of Mura. I know of no greater happiness anywhere equal to the nectar of remembering Hari’s feet.

Do not be afraid, foolish mind, brooding over Yama’s long torments; these enemies, our sins, have no hold on us, for our master is Shridhara, Lakshmi’s lord. Shake off laziness and meditate on Narayana, so easily reached through devotion. He removes the sorrows of the whole world; can he not save his own servant?

Bhavajaladhigatanam dvandvavatahatanam sutaduhitrikalatratranabhararditanam, vishamavishayatoye majjatamaplavanam bhavatu sharanameko vishnupoto naranam.

For people adrift in the ocean of worldly life, battered by the winds of joy and sorrow, weighed down by the burden of caring for sons, daughters and wife, sinking without a raft in the treacherous waters of sense pleasure, may Vishnu alone be the ship of refuge.

Bhavajaladhimagadham dustaram nistareyam kathamahamiti cheto ma sma gah kataratvam, sarasijadrishi deve tavaki bhaktireka narakabhidi nishanna tarayishyatyavashyam.

O mind, don’t lose heart wondering, “How will I cross this bottomless, impassable ocean of worldly life?” Your devotion alone, resting in the lotus-eyed Lord who destroyed Naraka, will surely carry you across.

Trishnatoye madanapavanoddhutamohormimale daravarte tanayasahajagrahasanghakule cha, samsarakhye mahati jaladhau majjatam nastridhaman padambhoje varada bhavato bhaktinavam prayachchha.

In this vast ocean called worldly life, whose water is craving, whose waves of delusion are whipped up by the wind of desire, whose whirlpool is one’s wife, and which teems with crocodiles in the form of children and siblings, we are sinking. O Lord of the three realms, giver of boons, grant us the boat of devotion to your lotus feet.

Let me not see, even for a moment, those without merit who lack devotion to your lotus feet; let me not hear any tale but your story, so worth hearing; let me not think of those who deny you in their hearts, Madhava, lord of the worlds; and in birth after birth, let me never be without your service.

Tongue, praise Keshava; mind, worship Shridhara; hands, serve the Lord; ears, listen to stories of Achyuta; eyes, behold Krishna; feet, go to Hari’s temple; nose, smell the tulsi at Mukunda’s feet; head, bow to Adhokshaja.

Listen, people! Here is the cure for the disease of birth and death, which yogic sages like Yajnavalkya teach: drink the inner light called Krishna, immeasurable, one and immortal. Once drunk, this supreme medicine brings final liberation.

O mortals, hear what is truly good for you; I will say it briefly. You who have sunk deep into the ocean of worldly life, full of waves of trouble, set aside all other learning and keep repeating in your heart, with Om and with a bow, the mantra “Namo Narayanaya”.

Once your glory is seen, the earth is a speck of dust, the waters mere drops, fire a tiny spark, the wind a faint breath, the sky a pinhole, and Rudra, Brahma and all the gods mere insects. Your glory, which knows no bounds, triumphs.

With folded hands, bowed head, hair standing on end, a voice choked with feeling and tears streaming from our eyes, may our whole life pass, lotus-eyed Lord, in tasting the nectar of meditating on your lotus feet.

O Gopala, ocean of mercy, husband of the ocean’s daughter, slayer of Kamsa, you who carried compassion to the king of elephants, Madhava, Balarama’s brother, teacher of the three worlds, lotus-eyed lord of the gopis: protect me. I know nothing but you.

May Krishna, crest jewel of the cowherds, grant us what is best: the Garuda-gem against the serpent of devotees’ troubles, the guardian jewel of the three worlds, the rain cloud for the thirsting eyes of the gopis, the very seal of beauty, the one jewel adorning Rukmini, jewel among women, and the crest jewel of the gods.

O tongue, chant, keep chanting the mantra of Shri Krishna: the one mantra that cuts down enemies, honoured by every word of the Upanishads, the mantra that carries us across worldly life, that drives away the gathered darkness, the one mantra of all prosperity, that saves those bitten by the snake of misfortune, the mantra that makes this birth worthwhile.

O mind, drink the divine medicine of Shri Krishna: medicine that calms delusion, that turns sages’ minds inward, that torments the demon kings, the one life-giving medicine of the three worlds, supremely good for devotees, the one cure for the fear of worldly existence, the medicine that brings the highest good.

Without remembering his lotus feet, scripture study is crying in the wilderness, daily Vedic vows only burn fat, charity and rites are offerings poured into ashes, and bathing at holy places is an elephant’s bath. Victory to that Lord Narayana!

While our Lord Narayana is here, the Supreme Person, sole ruler of the three worlds, worthy of the mind’s service, who gives his own state to his devotees, we go looking to serve some lowly man, lord of a few villages, who gives little. Alas, how foolish and pitiful we are!
