The doe-eyed gopis, their hearts aching with love and longing to serve your feet, worshipped a sand image of Girija every day on the bank of the Yamuna.

Absorbed in your names and stories, the lovely-eyed girls came together to the river at dawn and worshipped with hundreds of offerings, praying that Nanda’s son would become their beloved.

Seeing the restless-eyed girls keep this vow for a whole month, you, soft with compassion, came to the riverbank wishing to bless them.

At the end of their vow they had left their clothes on the bank and were lost in play in the Yamuna’s waters; seeing you before them, they were embarrassed.

As the girls bowed their faces in shame, you gathered the heap of clothes lying nearby and quickly climbed onto a branch of a tree.

“Come here, lovely-eyed ones, and take your clothes, each her own.” As you said this with a soft, teasing smile, the girls were bewildered.

“Long may you live, dear boy! Why do you tease your own servants? Lotus-eyed one, give us our clothes.” Hearing this, you only smiled.

When they came up the bank with joined palms, you saw they were pure and had no refuge but you, and gladly gave back all their clothes, along with your grace and these words:
Viditam nanu vo manishitam vaditarastviha yogyamuttaram, yamunapuline sachandrikah kshanada ityabalastvamuchivan.
“I know what is in your hearts, and I will give the right answer: the moonlit nights on the sands of the Yamuna.” So you told the girls.

Hearing those honey-sweet words from your lips, the doe-eyed girls slowly went home, gazing lovingly again and again at your lotus face.

Having blessed the cowherd girls this way, you roamed the forest edges as before. Hari, cool with compassion, quickly take away all my ailments.
